It's interesting how the authors chose to portray her in her later years, taking away the glamour of the young, beautiful, seductive slave to let her shine for her wits instead.

To you treachery is a virtue, you have many faces and ten tongues. I'm surprised my heart still clings to you in spite of what you put me through. - Arib al-Ma'muniyya To think how influential Early Islamic Poetry is even today, especially in the field of worldly love (Ishq-e-majazi). It's truly one of the most interesting domains when it comes to the history of the Islamic Golden Age.

It's exciting to see this formidable cultural figure of the Abbasid golden age discussed here. Arib was just one of the many distinguished women musicians and poets of this period, but remains among the better remembered, for her varied accomplishments, in all of which she was said to have excelled, and also because of her remarkable longevity, living almost the entire span of the ninth century. There is an amusing anecdote preserved of Arib in her old age, a wealthy and famous grande dame, being visited by a couple of much younger men who sought to meet the living legend. Knowing of her past as a concubine, well versed in the sensual arts, they asked her if she she still felt fleshly desire at that stage of life, and she replied that her heart still knew passion, but her limbs could no longer obey.

The thing is, Islam’s treatment of slaves was A LOT different to the west’s treatment. Freeing them was encouraged, some of them even got to ruling ranks like the “Mamluks”, and many other ”rights”(if you will) that were really unique to the religion.
@LoudWaffle
@LoudWaffle 5 ай бұрын
It really depends on the place and time, "Islam" as a whole does not treat slaves in any particularly specific way. How slaves are treated is always up to the humans. But yeah, in Arib's context it's important not to equate the slavery she was under to something like American chattel slavery.

@@nasseraltamimi1778How did Islam change the treatment?
@nasseraltamimi1778
@nasseraltamimi1778 5 ай бұрын
@@forgetful9845 Sure. Here are a handful of examples: 1) Islam narrowed down the ways of enslaving people into one way, which is captivity in war. Back then, the pagans had many ways of enslaving people, like enslaving you if you are in debt as an example. 2) Treatment of slaves had no restrictions back then. When Islam came, the prophet peace be upon him stated that they are our brothers. We should clothe them of our clothes, and feed them with our food, and that we do not burden them with what they can’t bear (Sahih al-Bukhari 30). In fact, one of the last advices he gave before his death is to treat slaves with utmost care (Sunan Abi Dawud 5156). 3) Freeing of slaves is heavily encouraged (Qur’an 90:11-13), sometimes even obligatory, in Islam. If the master, as an example, hits his slave, the expiation of such an act is to set him free (Sahih Muslim 1657a). 4) Slaves in Islam can very will be on leading ranks of governments. Now there is no specific way of them getting to hierarchies, but if they do so,we are obligated to listen to him (Sunan an-Nasa'i 4192). You can search about the Mamluks if you want to know more. Those were some of the main examples. There are actually more, but I assume you get the idea.

@@phoenixk4328It's a story that she herself was said to have promoted, but she may not have ever known the truth of the matter. She was an infant when Jafar was executed by the Caliph and the rest of the Barmakid clan fell from power. As for ethnicity, had her father been Jafar, the heritage of her mother could still have been any ethnicity that fell under Abbasid dominion, so she could well have been a mixture of ethnicities. As for her name, Arabic was the lingua franca of the society, and there would have been nothing extraordinary in her being given an Arabic name, regardless of the backgrounds of her parents.

A new topic for your content: There is this academic Islamic Scholar and Researcher named Gunter Luling. He has a quite interesting research on syrian-aramaic origin of Quran, which is quite getting the attention of all scholars of Islam. It is saying how the words have their meanings changed since Dots(.) and other Arabic alphabet elements are added later to the oral Quran compared to earliest written version of Quran which didn’t have them. It is an interesting topic to delve into. Some of the new meanings are much more logical and actually makes more sense and made me believe in the new translation of this holy book more than the translation that was thought of as original before. I listened to his reasons without bias and ego and it makes sense. You may like to delve into the topic.

It's unfortunate that this channel has hardly any content touching on pantheism, which is perhaps the one view of God hated by both Christians and atheists in equal measure; most likely because neither can disprove the existence of The Universe which is the same as the Pantheistic God. Because the Pantheistic God/The Universe exists, both atheists and Christians go into crisis mode when faced with this reality. Severe cognitive dissonance ensues.
