@@vini_renee So if you guys are wondering what happened to the mall it seems the primary problem is 3 of its 4 anchor stores closed. The 4 anchor stores were Sears, JCPenny, Macy’s, and Lord & Taylor. Anchor stores are exactly what they say, they’re responsible for attracting the majority of the customers to the mall. Ppl go to shop at them specifically then kinda wonder out into the mall because they’re already there. It was kinda just unfortunate that 3 of them were from companies going under and closing retail locations. Macys closed in 2023 and with that the mall closed for good shortly after.

The first time I got kicked out of the mall was in 1997, and it was for skating in the mall with a friend and then running from security for a while. My only suggestion for skating where you aren't supposed to, is make sure you're good on your skates before trying it. Runing from security is inevitable, it will happen; but that's the fun part in my experience. Enjoyed your vid man, that mall is somethin else!!

Everything else is relatively new (like the lady whose been there since 2019). If you haven’t tried going to Washingtonian Center (also known as Rio) you might enjoy skating there. This mall opened in 1978, and thrived until around 2005-2010 when it rather quickly started to decline. They lost Penny's, then Lord and Taylor, then Sears. You can't survive as a small shop in a big place with no anchor store traffic. One anchor doesn't move people from end to end, past the little shops. We skated through yesterday, but got tossed. We had a good strategy, though, that worked because I knew where security was located, and what parts would be busy. So we made it through the entire mall before being thrown out.

Believe it or not, this mall used to be one of the best in the area. I used to come here pretty much every weekend and it was packed even back in 2018. There's a local abandoned mall with only a few stores in the food court open, and the AMC theater. Everything else is closed. Walking through it creeps me out, because it's like walking through the desiccated shell of a once living beast. It's an actual liminal space - where you can sense people were, and should be, but there's no one. Maybe a handful, but that's it. The feeling of being inside something surreal/dead where you can sense the ghost of the past in every closed store and every empty bench creeps me out so much that I can't stay in it for long. I'm super uncomfortable with liminal spaces because of this. I don't know if it's because I remember malls from the 90's when they were alive or not.
