I love this! I'm so sick of reading the same, hyped, YA books... Rainbow Rowell, Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas, John Green, I love you all, I just need something different. I don't want to be judged or questioned for reading that small book that is simply filled with short stories about somebodies everyday life by an author people have never heard of, or the non fiction book that someone saw on their parents' bookshelf and would never think to pick up, or that history book that people just have no idea why I'm reading because "you're not even in school Shannon, you don't have to read that!" etc etc etc. I read to learn. I read to escape and not necessarily to Hogwarts or Camp Half Blood, but instead to the real past and present, just those that aren't MY past and present - to the minds of those who have lived before, and into the lives of those who are walking the same earth as me now. I cannot get that from the books in the "most popular teen fiction" section in Waterstones, which is why I am SO thankful for these kinds of videos.

What a lovely idea for a video! Please make more of these 😊I love how you are (I think?) the only big booktuber who talks about niche/obscure books. It's encouraging for other members of the community because it's easy to get the impression that reading tons of super popular YA new releases is somehow a requirement. so... just keep being you :)

I have been on a personal mission lately of finding booktubers that talk about lots of different kinds of books. Been going well so far and really keeps me away from the fatigue of seeing everyone talk about the same book over and over again (though it can be fun to read a book as a part of a huge community, too).

Super Pao That sounds like a great mission! :) I quite agree: it is nice to read hyped books too because of all the people who read them at roughly the same time. That said, I would love to see Booktube become more receptive to other, lesser-known books (such as these!).

Can you consider making a video in Spanish (w/ eng subs)? I say "consider" cause I doubt you have a lot of time for that. But man, that would be so cool. I'm gonna be taking up ASL next year, maybe something else, but I'm leaning towards ASL, so. But language in general? Good times. Do it ;P

It's not a controversy that you've invented, it's a real thing! I didn't take the module but there was one in my university about the art of letter-writing and one of the core themes that it tackles is the right to privacy. Should we read them? Should we publish them? Does it really matter? We're so interested in providing such a distinctive line between the dead and the living that it's interesting that we cross that line to provide (metaphorically at least) new life to the individual(s). Anyway, rather a long tangent to my initial idea for this comment of: loved the video!

Hi Ariel I was wondering if you could make some suggestions about feel-good books. I've searched on youtube and every video I found on the topic was centered on easy read rom-coms which are funny and light. That's all good and well, but I'm hoping to come across something with more substance. I've read so many wonderful books lately, but many of them are tinged with sadness and leave me feeling really introspective and sad. I'm looking for books which make you feel hopeful and bright even if they do explore themes which are difficult. I'm thinking of the kind of books that you can read and re-read after a difficult week knowing that they will bring some peace. Any ideas? Thank you, and have a lovely Christmas ahead :)

I found your video refreshing and amusing, because I can relate. I get these obsessions about random things or people. Then I search out every scrap of information I can find. Sadly Nobody in my personal life cares about whatever topic I’m obsessing about at the moment. And nobody on BookTube does either. You’ve reminded me that it’s okay to read these books and push the MUST READS aside, take my time, and enjoy the books I really want to read.

I loved this type of video. My thoughts (if you care to hear them) are; try not to worry too much about what kind of videos will give you more clicks or more views. The point of Booktube is to talk about books with other people who love to read. And you've mentioned before that you want to use your platform to help, encourage, educate... be something good in the world. I think videos like this do that because it encourages people to search for something MORE. It's true that you wont get as many clicks but you're a unique, quirky, inspirational person. And (I would think) you want people to watch who want the authentic you. This is you being you. And we love it. People that don't love that won't click. Which kinda sounds like a win to me :)

I actually own the diary of Frida Kahlo as well! I’m planning on it being my first read of 2018. I think it would be so awesome if you did a video all about Frida and the biographies written about her, there are so many. I also highly recommend Frida by Sebastian Perez and Benjamin Lacombe, which is a beautiful book of artwork that tells her life story. Besides that, I found other books in this video I had never heard of but am really interested in checking out! Thank you for always bringing forth unique and thought provoking content.

This is an old video, and you may not see this but I'm sure you still wonder about this occasionally. In my opinion, sharing books that we have no idea about is very beneficial and useful, because that's the whole point of booktube, isn't it? Sure, talking about the hyped books is fun but if you think back, the talking to other people used to be the way we found out about new reads, whether it be a classic or new release. So, sharing books no one knows about could arguably be worth even more because maybe that's THE book someone needs? All in all, booktube enables us to share books, it tends to focus on new releases and hyped/central/viral books but that wasn't and isn't booktube's sole purpose. We're here to share books, period.

You mentioned Frieda Kahlo's ethnicity, and I just wanted to toss out there that there has been a history of German immigration to Mexico. I also want to point out that categorizing race and ethnicity is a very tricky thing. It varies from person to person and from country to country. People from different parts of the world have different ways of looking at race and ethnicity and keep in mind that there are many people in thw U.S. with a different ethnic background, but identify as American. I hope you enjoy your stack of books once you get the chance to read them.

I LOVED THIS VIDEO!!!!!! No offense to any of the other booktubers out there, but I often get tired of seeing the same old, same old popular books. I'm also trying to read outside of my comfort zone and I think these kinds of videos will be really helpful and interesting!!

All books by Chuck Palahniuk, all books by Jodorowsky, all books by Luis Borges plus the Plato's Symposium. These are my suggestions. Very nice video and channel by the way.

loved this video idea! I love knowing what everyone's specific interests are this way, instead of just what's popular! obviously there's merit in the popular books on booktube, but there are SO MANY OTHER great books worth exploring!

Today is 1 July 2019 - Canada day!! Yes I live in Canada. But I have always preferred to read non fiction, historical fiction and some sci-fi. Most of the non fiction I read is biographies and memoirs. but NOONE EVER WANTS TO TALK ABOUT NON FICTION ON BOOKTUBE!!! Which often gets me depressed. You are a breath of fresh air and i just found you today!!! I have been watching booktube for years!! How come I never saw you before today? Lets see - you came up in the recommended list from Tomes and Tunes channel, and she was doing her 2019 NEWTS TBR which had been announced less than 24 hours earlier by the creator, G from Book roast. I do like doing the OWLS and NEWTS read-a-thons from Book Roast. She is pretty big into Harry Potter. So now I am going to watch somwe of your earlier stuff. I certainly loved this video. I loved the SPONTANEITY of you choosing your books, and yes I would LOVE to see the rest of the books in a second video. PS I would LOVE to find the Frieda Kahlo diary because I LOVE Art and Art History!!

Ariel, I started watching booktube in the summer of 2015, it has been 2.5 years now. Honestly, I am kinda sick of same books going AROUND and AROUND in everyone's channels, so I REALLY LOVED 💞 this book haul of yours! keep doing you 👍🏼

I love how excited you are throughout this video :) I think "Scratch" and "Why Poetry" sound really interesting. I'm not a huge fan of poetry, BECAUSE I had to dissect it in school, and I enjoy reading for entertainment rather than reading to analyze things. But Why Poetry sounds like an interesting book that could change my opinion on them!

I LOVED this video so much!!! tbh, most of my reading is about books nobody cares and this video spoke to my SOUL (specially because I'd read everything you showed?????? idk) About Frida Kahlo's journal: I actually hate her work, but this book is AMAZING!!! It's basically an art journal and this is perfect???? I wish her paints were like her journals tbh hahaha About Why Poetry and the idea of accessibility to poetry: I don't know if you know something about Brazilian literature, but during the 60's and 70's there was a literature movement called "poesia marginal" (marginal poetry), which consisted basic in a lot of jokes and puns, and the main feature of those poems was being accessible for the public in alternative ways (cause dictatorship and all). Anyway, I thought you may like it! Please, do more videos like this!!!! Random books are the best!

This is my FAVORITE kind of TBR. Whenever people talk about the same popular books you have to listen to the same synopsis over and over as well as the classic “I know I should have read this already...” (plus hello... what’s up with the reader guilt? Let’s read whatever we want whenever we want!). But with this kind of video we really get to hear your passion and genuine interest in these subjects, as well as being exposed to books that most of us have not heard of before. Plus, the title made me laugh. Edit: And I also have Flâneuse on my shelf! It is super random but I agree that the idea of it just sounds really interesting.
