In this video, I have discussed summary and analysis of first five chapters of the poetics. The video is divided into three parts. In first part I have discussed brief biography (life & work) of Aristotle. In Second Part I have given a brief introduction to Aristotle’s book Poetics. In third part I have discussed summary of first five chapters of Aristotle’s Poetics.
Aristotle was famous Greek Philosopher and polymath born in 384 BC at Stagira. His Father Nichomachus was a royal physician. At the age of seventeen years Aristotle joined Plato’ Academy in Athens. At that time Athens was considered the intellectual center of the World. Aristotle quits academy when Plato died. After the death of Plato he was invited by Phillip Second to teach thirteen years old Alexander. Aristotle returns to Athens when Alexander the Great became King and later World Conquered.
Important works that I have mentioned in video are the politics, Nichomachean Ethics and the poetics.
Then, I have discussed brief introduction of the book Poetics. The Poetics falls into six parts:
(1) Chapters 1-5-introductory remarks on poetry, classification of poetry into different kinds. (Concept of Imitation)
(2) Chapters 6-19-discussion of Tragedy
(3) Chapters 20-22-discussion of poetic diction, style, vocabulary, etc.
(4) Chapter 23-discussion of Narrative Poetry and Tragedy
(5) Chapters 24 & 26-discussion of Epic and comparison with Tragedy
(6) Chapter 25-objections of critics against poetry and Aristotle’s reply.
Poetics was written around 335 BC when Aristotle was 49 years old. Poetics was actually a covert answer to Plato’s allegation on poetry as immoral and twice removed from reality.
I. Finally I have discussed summary of first five chapters: Imitation
II. The object of imitation
III. The Manner of Imitation
IV. Development of poetry
V. Rise of Comedy.
Finally I have elaborated Aristotle’s theory of imitation with medium of imitation, manner of imitation and object of imitation or mimes. : In his view, imitation is objective representation of life.
