---
At age 17, Aristotle enrolled in the Platonic Academy. He would stay there for 20 years.
Founded by the father of Western philosophy, the Greek philosopher Plato, Aristotle was the most promising student around. He asked many questions and answered even more.
The exact time of his departure from The Academy is disputed, but it’s said that he left soon after Plato died due to his dislike of the direction that it subsequently took. In the years following, he would even go on to argue against many of his late teacher’s core ideas.
It’s impossible to say how much Aristotle wrote, but even from the fraction of his work that we have left today, there is a stunning amount of breadth in the subjects he covered.

Even if I’m an introvert, I value what little friends I have. Without them, I don’t know how I could get through life. Friendships makes us less lonely and they know a real part of ourselves. Even if I’m an introvert and don’t talk much I really love and cherish my friends. They bring out the hidden me, where I can be who I am. I thought I could get through life by myself. But it’s so lonesome, and TOO peaceful. Nothing is wrong if it’s just me, and it’s so.. routine. It’s so boring if it’s just me. But my friends always break that. They bring chaos and problems and the most random things. I am thankful.

Friends exist but you have to change your definition of what a friend is, that ride or die, through the good and bad with undying loyalty is almost non-existent. If you expect as much you will always be disappointed, rather look at them as relationships of convenience meaning your not setting the bar too high for them, your just enjoy thier company for however long it last. A true friend is someone who has an opportunity to betray you and they choose to defend you.
@nvmffs
@nvmffs 7 ай бұрын
It's not non-existent but it's strongly dependent on the circumstances. We live in times where we can get by easier than ever by ourselves and there are less wars in the world which means less opportunity to form strong bonds. All interpersonal relationships have been eroding, including marriage. We don't even have mandatory military service anymore in our country (which was the case 15 years ago) and that was one of the places where one can find friends for life. I don't like the idea that the notion of friendship could be construed as "relationship of convenience" or some kind of trade. If it has come down to that, then it was never a friendship to begin with.

The people who are bitter (and it's justified that they are) in the comment section about someone screwing you over or whatnot, the video explains the type of friendship you had. Accidental friendships do not last long, and that is the truth. Long term friendships are for the most part iron clad. You can have fights with your friends, you can have fall outs, and other bad things can happen and you can STILL be friends because you reconcile and the time you spent together as friends helps you through that. "Through thick and thin" is not just a pretty phrase that was put there, it's actually the truth. I should also mention that long time friendships are RARE in nature. You are not going to have thousands of long time friends. Of course, there is the possibility of a long time friend stabbing you in the back...it's very possible and to exclude the possibility would be foolish. However it's far more likely that someone with something to gain (Friendship of benefit) would backstab you over a life long friend. Life long friends are considered "Best friends" for a reason. They actually treat you like family and would walk through the fire with you. This is coming from someone who has had terrible friendship breakups as well. If there is one thing I truly believe in, it's friendship. It kept me alive all these years after going through cancer and chemo and then the late effects from said cancer after I stopped chemo years ago.

The only person I know who has a true friend is my father. They've lived through childhood abuse, war, famine, and homelessness. They met in an orphanage (in Somali of all places) and clicked do to both secretly planning their "great" escape. Now my dads a truck driver who makes 20k a month and guess who bought him his first truck? His best friend who's now a millionaire from opening his own electric company in Somalia. Sadly he's infertile (which is basically a death sentence in Somali because no woman will come near you) and desperately wanted someone to pass down his wealth to so my father donated his sperm in order for him to have a family. My uncle married a lady promising her a child and she certainly got a child. These two give me hope that true friendship does exist. Some people are just lucky to find them early.

I LOVVVVEEEE how this young man so flippantly including **PARENTS** in his list of people who may potentially feel jealousy towards you as their child. I hope his words reach any abused people in younger generations especially so they know they're not the crazy ones and that it's somethingwrong with them, when who is really screwed up are their parents. As controversial and objectionable as a concept that may be, it doesn't make it any less common. Not that it's the majority of parents, or even the average parent(s), but parents literally being jealous of their children, and secretly harboring resentment and hopes that they fail to achieve their goals and dreams or don't outshine them, is way more common than people know or want to admit. Great video and important overall message.

I met a potential friend last week. She was intelligent, had lots of reasonable ideas about the world, friendly, and we had many common interests. Unfortunately, when it was time to end the conversation, I lacked the courage to ask for contact information so that a friendship is possible. Such is life.
@MrWillibaldvongluck1

Zeayo I used to do that, was too intimidated to (dare) ask for a (potential) friend's contact details. So I made a point of giving them mine, as it was less threatening for me. I also felt it was kinder, giving them control over who initiates the (next) contact. Then I was advised that by doing that, I was being less than assertive, leaving the responsibility for initiating contact to the other person. I was also advised, it is (ultimately) flattering for the other person if you ask for their contact details...God knows!

OR say " this was a great conversation! Here's my Facebook Instant Message information....etc Another great one is to be bold if you're sitting by her or someone and very smoothly type your phone number into her phone and text yourself. You'll feel the body language Clues when it's time to make the maneuver 👍 If she has an excuse or husband or refuses respond by saying "it was nice talking to you" with a sincere friendly tone and then move on. I read an article the other day that said there are three million single black women in America and there are three females to every male on the planet. Aristotle's Ethics was an unfinished work, a compilation of notes ... he said a lot in praise of friendship, but he also said the best life doesn't need friends, it's complete in itself and has no need of companionship. It seems to me he was plainly thinking of different times in life ... the young need friendships for learning and fun, but once you're older, other people are a drain on your time, especially if you are able to learn on your own and the other people have problems that need your attention. If you're trying to get something done and your friends aren't helpful, they're just going to annoy you. If you've already had great friendships, there's no real point in trying to spend time together (which is characteristic of friendship, he says) ... an occasional get together is probably best for older people. ;)

Thanks, I've not understood categories of friendship in this way before, and feel some relief in the possibility of improving my situation on this front. I can barely stand the low integrity garbage I currently count as my friendships. I spend too much energy ruminating on the disappointments and dissatisfaction but without many prospects. I can see real potential in joining with others with similar values toward some good.

The way it was explained to me when I was a teenager is much simpler, not dissing this video, but I think they have the order wrong: First is relationship based on pleasure. Nothing wrong with that. But the friendship is gone once either person wants to breakaway. Second is based on utility. Doesn't have to be heartless or mindless but still relies on when A leaves B for C because B no longer serves A. Nothing wrong with that either. The third is based on wanting what is best for your friend for their sake. You are devoting actions, mentalities, behaviours - you are doing your best to provide a relationship where you truly nurture the parts of listening to each other and communicating with each other without over reactions without dramatic judgement.

Interesting video. I agree that Friendship of good is most desirable, however I find that it's a lot more vague in how to go about obtaining one. My understanding, after thinking a bit about it, is that a friendship will start as either on of utility or pleasure before potentially becoming one of good. I speak from experience where some university friends or work colleagues have become terrific friends, and I'd put them more towards the friendship of good category than one purely of utility or pleasure any more.

If you are under the idea that your wife should be your best friend, make sure you meet her when you are struggling the most. Financially and emotionally that is. If she sticks it out with you then you have the benefit of having both her utility and pleasure. A true friendship that can't be cultivated when you are well off usually, because what you will attract then is either people wanting utility or pleasure but no friendship or love.

doge fm I think I understand. What I want to say, even if someone harms you, that's their problem, because it actually doesn't harm you, it harms them. It shows who they are, not who you are. After the pleasure comes the pain. Of course, there is pain after something, but why don't we see what's good in bad rather than seeing what's bad in good. I am not so much into that optimistic stuff but this idea sometimes helps. I hope I understand you and I am clear.

Man. The philosophers need to make a comeback. All this law of attraction has people in some weird delusional state that can be called 'functional' sanity. If you value truth then God be with you. The endurance needed to outshine pain against the decline of our society will be pivotal to potentially saving it.

Today, so many live under the hallucination that friendships are a thing of quantity and they'll be the first to talk about how many friends they have. If you pay close attention, nearly all of those friendships are superficial or very shallow and have no basis in reciprocity. Of course, if you only work 40 hours a week then you have plenty of time to waste on those sorts of fickle friendships.

I believe there is also the "romantic intention" friendship between members of the opposite sex, where one party is 'friends' in the hope that something more might develop. They then unceremoniously dump the 'friendship' as soon as they realize nothing more is going to happen or they meet someone else. They always say you can tell someone's goodness of character by how well they treat people from whom they stand nothing to gain.

Not totally true. If you open the door and give people a chance (especially a stranger) to access you... people will surprise you with their generosity of time, patience, friendship and support when no one else will. But you must both keep the opportunity open (don't sit by yourself, don't be a closed book) and cultivate each Opportunity as it arises (like a flower that you water, initially nothing for your efforts in time you are rewarded by both green shoots and sweet colourful bloom). Take it from someone who knows. "A life well lived has both friendship and companionship" - Aristotle (I paraphrase)

It seems there are two sorts of relationships generally; ones based on the truth and ones based on lies; to do with vanity and purely physical and mental - rather than spiritual and philosophical - considerations. Obviously there’s a time to lie and a time to say certain truths, practically speaking. But differentiating one from the other is never difficult, because people who value the truth over their friendship cannot in fact offend each other by telling the truth, and they inadvertently (which is how you know it’s good) build the strongest friendships. This is why Aristotle said that while we love both the truth and our friends, we must love the truth first. I would amend his famous statement to conclude that, in fact, our only calling is to love the truth. A friend worth having loves the truth first and foremost; and not only would they not be offended by the truth, they would in fact be offended by being lied to for the purposes of maintaining a “friendship”. Actually though, someone who’s made the truth their ultimate concern wouldn’t be offended because they know, as Jesus said, that people who lie to make fake friends know not what they do - how could they? They’re corruption is not physical or even mental, but spiritual. He would sympathize with those people, but that sympathy would never cause them to lie and so would never reach the person anyway unless they had a change of heart. He who sacrifices the truth for friendship will have neither; but he who sacrifices friendship for the truth will have both. It’s like when Jesus said “he who dies will live, and he who lives will die”. If you die of the ego, which lies to you and convinces you to lie to others for whatever shallow reason, you can truly live. Whereas if you desperately cling to a broken and mangled “life” only for the purposes of convincing yourself (because inside you’re full of doubt because you know it isn’t true) that you’re alive; then really you’re dead already. This is how you know that the spirit or the soul is not an imaginary concept. In fact, the physical realm - like our bodies - exists only as a place for our spirits to interact in, and for the truth to either be created and reaffirmed or denied and destroyed. So in real sense, the physical realm doesn’t really exist; not except as a playground for the spirit; the battle between the truth and the lie. When I say it doesn’t exist, I just mean that in reality is has absolutely no bearing on the real fight - between truth and falsehood. This is mind blowing when you realize that evil cannot even fight a direct spiritual battle with good. All it can ever do is wage war within the physical world, and what that always - in every case - means is trying to inject the physical with spiritual qualities. In the purely physical, there is no good. Included in the physical are; the 5 senses, emotions, and thoughts. Many people will dispute the idea that emotions and thoughts are really physical. Emotions come from physical hormones rushing through our body. That’s all they are. They can have a practical purpose in some sense, but actually they don’t add anything of truth-value that wasn’t already there. I challenge anyone to give me an example of where emotions offer some value not already evident. Such examples will always invariable involve ignoring usually several red flags. Someone will say “because I was sad I was able to know that my relationship was unhealthy”, when they and everyone around them already knew that. The real question would be; why were they avoiding the truth they already knew to be the case? And wouldn’t you know it, the only possible answer is other so called conflicting emotions and thoughts. Book 2 coming soon… haha

what happens if you have a friendship because of something hard you both went through at age 12 and then this person became selfish and seeking only utility friendships leaving your virtuous friendship in the dust? I'm almost 40 and I still am there for her, but it's mainly because we are related now. she litterally does nothing for our friendship - ever. and she has changed her values to where she focuses on her image and friendships with wealthy people. I wish I knew what happened. what I should do if there's anything I can do?

hmmmm, these friend categories get pretty murky the more you try to identify the differences. You can utilize someone for pleasure and get pleasure in utilizing someone. But I suppose such is philosophy. More accurately Id imagine they should be labelled Practical and emotional friendships. But when someone's utility is purely to be a friend is that practical or emotional?

Explain Aristotle's views on non-citizens including women and slaves. Don't take authority-based arguments too serious and stop idolizing people. Rather, try to understand people and their works and then make up your own mind. If someone you like, has an opinion you disagree with, try to understand and argue, instead of blindly following or unfollowing.
