It's pretty similar to both Buddhisim and the jewish Ecclesiastes. Humanity developed it independently at least three times for it to turn out to be kind of right, which is cool. On atoms, it wasn't his theory (it was even earlier, by Leucippus) but he was a supporter.

The part you're talking about was neither unique nor novel. Epicurus was a very late Greek philosopher, and atomism predates even Socrates with Leucippus. From Plato to Aristotle most philosophical discussion of physics and metaphysics became concerned with topics like matter, form and essence rather than the composition of matter, but before Socrates/Plato and after Aristotle the discussion was largely between atomists (who believed in indivisible units of matter so small they could not be seen, that comprised everything in the universe and gave rise to the senses) and material monadists (who believed in infinitely divisible substances that interacted via waves in a kind of endless gridlock, often paired with the belief that there could be no such thing as a true void for reasons beyond the scope of a mid-length KZbin comment). It's worth noting that atomism and monadism are generally simultaneously accepted by the empirical natural philosophers (ie "scientists") of today: There are apparent particles, some of which are even still considered indivisible, that have a finite number of stable states in which they comprise matter and energy, and there are waves in a monadic field or membrane that actually give rise to those apparent particles. None of that actually vindicates or denounces the ancients; They were operating within the best science of their time and came to different conclusions for straightforward and sensible reasons. It is a fun quirk of the history of philosophy that, for example, the Stoics and Epicureans were philosophical "enemies," often even ridiculing each other publicly, despite their ethics and definitions of a good life appearing extremely similar to a layperson, but that because philosophy was a much broader term concerning not only topics like ethics, meaning and metaphysics but also physics, Stoics were generally monadists while Epicureans were generally atomists, and this was one of the topics over which they would go at each other's throats in discourse.

No it's not. If you bother to really inform about it, you realize that it has except on some details pretty much nothing to do with our modern knowledge. And as you can expect for that time, it's just a bullshit model based on nothing. And when we say that Epicure was empiricist, it's also misleading, like just he said that knowledge comes from sense which fits the strict definition of empiricism but nothing about a empiricist method to get good knowledge like we do today. The true basis of that comes from Aristotle and his Lyceum, which made the best models of their time for pretty much everything that could be studied.

When I first read Epicurus’ essays, I felt like I was grading a high schooler’s homework on particle physics. Initially was like well yeah duh, of course atoms work like that (mostly). I had to physically pause and digest that this man wrote these words around 2000 years ago. That’s when the penny dropped and my mind was truly blown.

The idea of the atom was much older though, it already appeared centuries before Epicurus. Although I am an Epicurean myself, in all fairness it must be said that Epicurus just expanded on the ideas of those before him.

@@trnogger yea obviously he knew about what atoms were thought to be, but what we mean by this theory was impressive was because the theories we have of atoms now weren't made until the 1800s. His theories are essentially on point, and it's impressive because he had no tools that those scientist had when making his observations. Please don't tread on us when we want to express how amazing we think it is that this philosopher was able to accurately describe the world so long ago.

What I learned: I don't wanna talk about plato, aristotle and pythagoras. There is a cycle among epicurus, diogenes, socrates, which I call "purpose of life" cycle. Epicurus believes the purpose of life must be "to make people happy and remove their pain and fear". Diogenes describes happiness as" not pursuing money, power,and fame but to pursue virtue". I don't like his definitin of virtue. Here, Socrates defines virtue as" wisdom, courage, justice, piety, ... combining all into one, and that is knowledge". And the better person is the one with more knowledge. But this cycle lacks in the end and it completes when we go back to Epicurus definiton of the "purpose of life".

You forgot Hedon, which gave us the philosophy of hedonism, which contradicted the "virtuous" and "objectivist" philosophies and instead stated that individual subjective happiness was the ultimate purpose in life. And even if you consider him a minor philosopher (which I would strongly disagree with, considering his philosophy is very much alive even today), you should have mentioned that Epicurus was a pupil of Hedon and part of his philosophy was about tempering the "YOLO" attitude of hedonists and create a more sustainable pursuit of happiness.

Even if any of this bullshit were true, the reason hedonism is so popular today is largely because hedonism is caused by the failure to live a virtuous and meager life. People don't subscribe to hedonism as a philosophy, they simply participate in it because being virtuous is difficult. It's like saying being unhealthy is a philosophy; no one actively desires to be unhealthy, they just make shitty choices that result in being unhealthy.

Fun fact about Pythagoras: He wasn't real. Historians agree that the most likely posibility is that the Pythagoreans made up a story for their founder and had him die based on their beliefs (look up Pythagoras's death if you're interested, it's a good story even if made up)

Small note that I feel is important: Epicurious is a large part of why we call atoms atoms. See the ancient Greek idea of an atom was that it was the smallest possible unit of matter and undividable. Even the name is derived from the Greek word "Uncuttable." So you can already see some ways in which ancient "atoms" were different from the modern understanding. The other important thing is that the ancient interpretation of atoms asserted many false things about their "atoms" so Epicurus was brilliant, but his atomic theory is just why we have some names in our atomic theory, they are basically entirely unrrelated beyond the broadesr strokes. TL;DR: We named atoms after Epicurus' idea, but his idea of "atoms" is entirely seperate from ours.

Epicurus is one of my favorite Greek philosophers. this video only scratches the surface of his very interesting and unique way of viewing life, death, religion, and knowledge. it's also worth mentioning that Epicurus is not the one to come up with the idea of atoms, which were thought before him by a different philosopher, but only improved upon an existing theory.

4:03 did he kinda predict wave lengths? Cause we perceive objects the color they are not because it's their color itself, but because they emit such a wave that corresponds to that precise color for our eye. Which might explain why insects like bees see colors differently from us
