Veterans Memorial Coliseum in downtown Phoenix holds around 10,000 for hockey. However, the building is outdated and renovations would cost around $50 million. Additionally, renovations would not be completed in time for the 2022-2023 season. Footprint Center, also in downtown Phoenix, recently had renovations that were paid for by the Phoenix Suns ownership. Suns ownership has also made it clear that they are not interested in sharing their facility with the NHL. This left very few options for the Coyotes and the NHL who have reiterated that they are committed to keeping the franchise in the Phoenix valley. Reaching an agreement with ASU in Tempe makes business sense as far as building relationships and partnerships with the community that they would like to build their new arena in. Obviously, this is a temporary solution. In the meantime, attending an NHL game in an intimate setting and in a far more convenient location than Glendale would be a lot of fun.

When the Atlanta Flames moved to Calgary in 1980 they played out of the Stampede Corral. It was built in 1950 and had a capacity of 6,475. It was an old and dumpy building. The Flames played there until 1983 when their new arena (Saddledome) was completed. This is not unprecedented. It takes 3 years to build an arena.
@Wexter00832 жыл бұрын
Very different situations. In the early 1980s hockey was not nearly as expensive from player salaries to overhead costs it was so much less. In the 1987 Wayne Gretzky was making a $1,000.000CDN as the top player in the league and the 10th highest paid was Barry Pederson (VAN) who was making $350,000CND. The average player salary was $25,000. Compare that to just the lowest paid players (plural) on the Coyotes currently $750,000USD and the highest paid Clayton Keller is making $7,150,000USD which means they are paying 95 and a half Wayne Gretzkys a year currently once you convert USD to CDN. The average attendance in the NHL (as in not at the bottom, but not in the Top 5) could range from from 10,000-15.000 a game in 1980-1981. Compare that to the modern NHL where the sky was considered falling when Ottawa only pulled in 14,500 a game in 2019. That would put Ottawa in the Top 10 in attendance in 1980 about as much as Vancouver, Minnesota, St. Louis and the New York Islanders and above Detroit, Winnipeg, Quebec, Chicago and LA. Yes ticket prices were lower and we have to account for inflation, but the NHL is serious money now-a-days we cannot compare 1980-1981 Calgary Flames to the 2022-2023 Arizona Coyotes. Teams are already struggling with attendance and revenue and we are talking about capping Arizona to 5,000 a game on a University Campus where students don't have the money to shell out $40 to $75 USD a game 41 times a season. That is a tall order to attract a new fanbase at inflated ticket prices to even make this a mildly not catastrophic loss. They cannot sell tickets at nosebleed prices of $13USD or else they would barley able to afford paying the cheapest player on salary. This is VERY, VERY bad for the Coyotes and we don't even know if Tempe will even build the arena yet. And this is a team that is already in serious dept as they are valued at $400 million dollars and are losing $33 million a year currently and only pull in $66 million a year in revenue. That means they'd need to pull in $100 million a year to make a profit. Do you honestly think they can do that in a university arena?

My wife and I live in Phoenix and know some of he issues that Glendale presented to the Arizona Coyotes club during the pandemic along with the issues of the 1.7 million in back taxes by the Coyotes for 2021. Part of this issue is the city of Glendale pitching a serious fit because the Coyotes intend to build an arena with the same local restaurant business model of Gila River which will be more central to the fan base. Helping the Coyotes to make this move comes from the city of Glendale raising tenant costs to the club (estimated to be 20% during the pandemic). Granted, everyone has been seriously hurt by Covid-19 since 2019, but for a city to hold a team's financial feet to the fire when no one is allowed to even attend a game and the economy itself is in jeopardy is ridiculous, especially over a long duration. There needs and needed to be some common sense on the part of the City of Glendale. As usual with most government, the more the city of Glendale pressed the matter, the more the Arizona Coyotes stood their ground (its a Hockey Team). Now that everything is said and done, the city of Glendale Arizona is going to lose big time with serious financial losses in rent, jobs and tax revenue. Those who will suffer more are the local business that depend on the foot traffic generated by the thousands of attendants to Gila River. The new stadium will be exceptional once approval by city planning is completed, however for most of our fan base we see this new venue as an exciting opportunity to fill the stands, rather than the sparse attendance we usually see. In many cases for visiting teams, we see a 2 (visitor) to 1 (Yotes) and sometimes 3 to 1 fan base (such as the Boston Bruins game here). What is a concern for Yotes fans is the proposed cost of season and regular tickets that are yet to be officially announced which will have an average price starting at $160 to $360 per seat. Current pricing starts at $10 per seat in the upper section and goes up from there with a regular lower concourse price of $80 per seat (like our season tickets). As season ticket holders in the lower concourse, this will be double the price and for many fans, they state emphatically this will price them out of reach for tickets. We are not the Boston Bruins or the Toronto Maple Leafs, this is the Arizona Coyotes who are almost dead last with line change assignments that many times do not make any sense. No one here in Arizona wants to buy expensive season tickets to go see a home team lose and lose big, so when the ticket prices are announced, we expect to see the Arizona Coyotes club get a reverse reality check but this time from the fans themselves.

I think this could be a great solution for ASU and The Coyotes. The Coyotes are in a real bad place. They have some huge issues brought on by a cavalcade of mistakes, past ownership uncertainty, heck, no owner at all, a host city that paved the way for them to come then inexplicably turned their back on them, and a losing team. All past management, City of Glendale, ownership problems and losing aside, what does it take to sell hockey in the desert? That’s the question. Always has been. This is a huge market and there IS room for the NHL. Ok, winning helps a lot, and is the biggest factor in selling tickets, no question about it, sure. But your not always going to win. Ask the Red Wings. Right now nobody cares. Stay, go whatever. It seems to me early ownership thought that there were enough eastern transplants here to get ticket sales started and the team would grow on the Valley. They had some big names on the team then. They didn’t do enough to grow a hockey culture or show the Valley what a great sport hockey is. I’m from Minnesota and hockey is a way of life there. Generations of families have devoted their lives to hockey. Most people here in the Valley have never even seen a game, let alone know what offsides is. I’ve seen both cultures. ASU only jumped to Div.1 hockey a few years ago and they are killing it. They have been top 20 in the country the last two years and almost made the Frozen Four last year and hardly anybody here even knows that ASU has a hockey team, except the alums. Nobody here even knows what the Frozen Four is. You gotta change that. ASU is on the precipice of being a hockey powerhouse. Do you want to spend winters in Duluth or Madison or Tempe? They are going to draw good recruits. Their current “stadium” however, is smaller than my High School’s, less than 1000. Absolutely had to change that. ASU can use this opportunity to grow awareness of their own growing and so far successful program, maybe even a National Championship. ASU’s potential success helps the Coyotes by growing interest and excitement about hockey. Hockey in the desert in particular. The Coyotes can use this opportunity to do the grassroots hockey community building that maybe has been lacking. Helping boys and girls fall in love with the sport and want to play, being more active in youth leagues, clinics, demonstrations, tourneys. Working together with ASU is best for both of them, because in a way, they both need the same thing: to create greater interest in hockey at the youth, High School, Amateur and Professional level, ultimately, of course, to sell more tickets and merchandise. Winning isn’t enough. Like I said, ASU almost made The Frozen Four. Still, nobody knows. Never heard an ASU hockey score on local TV. You gotta change that. It’s more than just marketing. Ad campaigns aren’t enough. The Coyotes need to be ambassadors of the game in the state of Arizona and this is a great opportunity to do that to their benefit as well as ASU, Tempe, and the Valley. If the owners and the NHL are committed to staying in the Valley, as they both seem to be, and being viable let alone ever being profitable, then they must: show organizational stability (steady ownership, management and a place to play, ((in a city that isn’t run by a bunch of idiots)) ), get the Valley to care about them more by tying them to the community (like the ASU partnership) and educate this Valley about what a great game this is and some of the world class athletes that play it. And somehow a better local media relationship. The Coyotes don’t get much air time in the local TV sports segments. I think even the announcers are not hockey fans and it shows. 30 seconds is all you get. You gotta change that. Few people here consider the Coyotes their own. They’re just here. Maybe for now. This deal with ASU gives them a place to play that they don’t have to maintain or staff, which was a big issue in Glendale. They can’t sell out 15,000 anyway. So you save costs for a couple years. You establish yourself in Tempe where you are going to build your house (which is Prime real estate, by the way. Tempe is “landlocked”. It cannot grow, so its property is precious to them and they are very careful about how they use it, and the revenue it will create), and the partnership with ASU can be used to grow hockey across the state at al levels and thus the Coyote brand. The Coyotes have big problems, but this could be the best move they ever made.

At what point do we start feeling bad, because their reputation as an NHL team, continues to drop and drop and drop. Think about it, other than rookies that want to make the NHL jump and desperate for any kind of opportunity even if it's the Coyotes and playing in a college arena. Think how hard it's gonna be for veteran NHL players or even stars, think "oh i want to be traded to that team or sign with that team, to play in THAT COLLEGE ARENA". not an attraction factor. Second edit: The plan is to use this college arena for 3-4 years while the Coyotes build the new permanent arena in tempe, HOWEVER, the city of TEMPE has yet to APPROVE AGREEMENT TO BUILD AN NEW ARENA. So they going with temporary solution while not even starting to build their new home or even knowing if they place they want to built it in, will approve them.

pull the plug on this sad sack of a team! Bring them to Quebec and it will easily be in the 10 top in the league in terms of revenue.

The coyotes need to go, it’s been a failed experiment far too long far too consistently. I don’t see how or why Arizona State would be succesful other than the fact that the brand is much stronger than the coyotes and alumni and students may attend, but not hockey fans. That may be their only draw, but there’s not doubt about it, there’s simply not enough interest in hockey in Arizona.

Vegas golden knights is perfect example how hockey works in desert, is the first franchise and by far the most loved by population of vegas, hockey is fun to watch and play, with a new arena i believe in 6 years this team will be the 2 franchise in Arizona, Suns always was a bunch of losers, is not dificult pass them, Diamondbacks the owner not investe in the team, is easy pass, Arizona Cardinals is difficult because is football, american love this thing, but if bet a team with perspective in future, i choose coyotes !!!!!

What a joke. Leave phoenix it doesn’t work. Go to hamilton, Quebec City, Milwaukee, a city where they will be welcomed and have a better arena

Enough's Enough move out of Phoenix Arizona we all see that the Yotes aren't successful there if Bettman & the NHL had any brains at all they would move the team to Quebec or if they wanna stay in the west coast move them to Saskatoon Saskatchewan the NhL had no problem moving out Quebec Winnipeg & Hartford in the 1990's but now that Its the yotes turn to move they wanna keep the team come on use your heads

The coyotes are such a shit show. I don't see how the NHL values this sorry market so much after 20 plus years of failure and massive losses. Another new arena is no guarantee that the fans would show up consistently year in and year out and make the team profitable. They have never made a dime in the desert and never will. Move em to Quebec
@jeffthewhiff2 жыл бұрын
I just read recently that Commissioner Bettman wants to keep the team in Arizona mainly because the owner is very wealthy, but you have to wonder how long can a franchise keep losing money before a relocation should take place.
@NickyGoal62 жыл бұрын
Ok just because Its a college area doesn't mean the coyotes can't play in it, besides the Calgary flames did the same thing.
