My favorite detail about the shooting - that, bafflingly, still hasn't been filmed to my knowledge - is that it was lightly snowing in Tombstone on the day of the gunfight. That would look absolutely amazing on film. No idea why no one has done it.

My dream was always to visit Langtry Tx ,the saloon of Judge Roy Bean - he's always been a love of my heart! We went one summer on vacation and it was fantastic! We also went to the Alamo and to Alamo Village movie set where the John Wayne movie was filmed.Ih the Longhorns were incredible on that ranch,as it's private property.I live in Texas and have years before our trip.Amd then I discover through ancestry search that my family has been Texans since before the Alamo and I'm related to Col.Travis by me paternal grandmother who was born a Travis. And settled in Abilene( near where I live) and in Morgan Mill,not far from the house I own I now know I've come full circle ..right back toy roots where I needed to be I suppose!

Santee, I have a Co-worker who is a Grandson of the Clantons and McLaurys. His family records state that the Earps were Cattle Rustling also from Mexico. His family Diary states " That he didn't understand why the Earps were bothering them, because they rustled Cattle also. Enjoyed the show, and thanks for sharing this great History Lesson.

As someone who’s been in the middle of a gun fight, shit happens fast and I think everyone sees what they see. Trauma, shock, adrenaline whatever.. It really goes down quickly when bullets start flying.

I'd been in a few scary situations and hate that feeling. One thing I know 1st hand is 10 people watching multiple people in a violent situation will all have a different account of what happened. Your mind will see things differently then the person next to you!

Having worked with law enforcement it makes sense to me that the Earps would have their weapons drawn. After all, if you think you may need it, the last place it should be is in the holster.

Something that always bothered me is Doc Holliday's clothing in movies. eyewitnesses said he often ( and at the actual O.K. Corral gunfight, ) wore a black bowler hat with a black bow tie and a gray shotgun coat. I think a movie where he is portrayed that way would be fantastic.

There was a RPG called Boothill, it the boxed set was a map set with the full casting of the OK corral. We worked through what supposed to have happened, and we discovered some odd inconsistencies. At least as far as the mechanics are concerned. I've often wondered how off history is.

Last visited Tombstone 4 years ago. Was surprised how many longterm locals still seemed to hold to a grudge over the famous gunfight. I thought, if I, a descendant of Devil Anse Hatfield, can get over the Hatfield and McCoy feud, then these folks should be able to move on. But different places and slightly different eras. It's all good.

I went to Tombstone in the late 80's. Back then they had some gallows set up. I read a notice nearby where they listed the hangings that had taken place in the 1880's. I was surprised how few there were. At one point there was an interval of over 20 years between them, probably fewer than you might get in a modern town

The Earps were charged with murder and a trial was held. There is a transcript of the trial on the internet. Many years ago I read a book titled “Wyatt Earp: The life behind the legend “ by Casey Tefertiller and is very interesting account of Wyatt and his life. I guess it is time re-read it again. They were never actually charged with murder, and no trial was held. They were indicted, and the inquest was held to decide whether there was enough evidence to bring the Earps and Holiday to trial. It was presided over by a Justice of the Peace, Wells Spicer, and there was no jury. Just an inquest.

Terrific video, Santee! I've discussed this with many modern proponents of both sides, that the Earps were heroes, and that they were villains. One argument of the anti-Earp side is that there is no real evidence that any of the Clantons or McLaurys ever threatened any of the Earps. Of course, we know that morning, Virgil "buffaloed" Ike Clanton, and Wyatt did the same to Tom McLaury. Here's what I think happened. Prior to the gunfight, as they were preparing to leave town, the Clantons and McLaurys were were talking, very publicly, about what had happened, and were letting off some steam. "I'm gonna kill Wyatt for what he did to me," ranted Tom McLaury. "Yeah, and I'm gonna kill Virgil!" replied Ike. They probably were not serious threats, but they were heard saying this by the witness called H.F. Sills and others, who reported those words to Marshal Earp as serious threats. Of course Virgil took these threats seriously, and set out to disarm those men. But I do not believe that the Earps set out to murder the Clantons and McLaurys, just to disarm them. Thanks for including the coroner's report. Some of what you had said I had learned on various shows over the years. The only thing for sure is it wasn't at the coral. One thing I would like to see would be a reenactment using appropriate powder. I expect and others seem to agree that after the first couple of shots that it would be difficult for both sides to see each other. I would love to see a forensic reporting on that reenactment.

Thanks for helping to blow away the smoke of mythology from this incident. I always thought it was simply the Earps cornering the Cowboys on the empty lot as they tried to leave town. A side note. The original metal bars in Earp's jail were dug up in Tombstone's garbage dump. The flat bars had a big rivet at each crossbar connection. The bars were very twisted and rusted. My friend Doug Thamert got the contract to use his forge to straighten and clean the bars so they could d be reinstalled in the old jail for historic authenticity. This Thamert did and when delivered for payment as per the contract no payment was made. Thamert was unable to get his money. The shadiness of this incident seems quite apropos for this shady time period snd history.

Lor, but seeing the Wyatt Earp TV series takes me back to my very young childhood. More recently I had a colleague, now sadly deceased, who was related to Wyatt - her surname was Earp too. Apparently the Earps, Clantons and Hollidays originally came from the British West Midlands (where my friend also lived) and some local historians wonder if the feud between them really began over here. PS - for my money the best OK Corral movie was an late 1930's film, almost now forgotten, starring Harry Carey Snr. It was certainly more accurate than the Burt Lancaster or Kevin Costner versions.

Bat Masterson had been in Tombstone with Wyatt Earp before the incident next to the OK Corral but had to go off to assist his brother and by the time he returned the fight was over. If he had been there the chances are he would would have just cuffed a couple of them at the side of the head with his pistol and then thrown them in the jailhouse. Masterson had no time for Doc Holiday as he viewed him as a drunk and a troublemaker. Interestingly all four of the Star Trek actors appearing in westerns. In fact DeForest Kelley had made a number of western prior to appearing in Star Trek and has said that it was his best time as an actor. Eye witnesses not being able to agree as to what happened has been a long known problem. There is also the Rashomon Effect which is about how the more times witnesses retell the story of what they say the saw the more they change what it is they saw. The Rashomon Effect comes from the film Rashomon which is the story is about the rape of a bride and the murder of her samurai husband and are recalled from the perspectives of a bandit, the bride, the samurai's ghost and a woodcutter. It was later remade by Hollywood as a western with William Shatner.

Awesome vid, Santee! Just one bone to pick... Even if it is just opinion! I'm not sure I'd describe the Clanton and McLaury family members as actually being members of the CCC. They appear to have been more along the lines of business associates. (I forget his first name, but one of the McLaury sons, not present during the fight, was a lawyer, who was part of the inquiry. Hmm. Talk about conflict of interest!) The Clantons and the McLaurys were ranchers, and used the "services" of the CCC to boost "revenue". Like not being part of the mob, but asking them for, um, help with the competition. Except, most of what went on was more about selling/buying stolen cattle, and less about breaking someone's legs. With that stated, they were also known to have engaged in cattle rustling, personally, as well. So, they could also technically be considered members of the CCC. The CCC were loosely organized, and the "membership", at any given time, varied greatly. It's not like they issued ID cards, and collected monthly dues. Lol. Of course, if the Clantons and Mclaurys were "members", that would make Sheriff Beehan one as well, considering his own connections. Oh, and one other thing... Right on. Wyatt had a pretty checkered past. However, he seems to always have been "righteous" when conducting himself in his actual boots-on-the-ground, lawman-about-town law enforcement duties. That's not to say he didn't profit from office, as many lawmen did. Even sheriffs often were paid with a percentage of county taxes collected. Plus, Wyatt did what he did, like running a gambling outfit (often strong arming others) in his off duty time. Yet, he seems fairly honorable in his actual dispensing of the law. That's why I generally come down on his side. There is Doc Holliday, as well. He was never the outlaw that legends make him seem, but he was an outlaw, and not the nicest of individuals. However, he seems to calm down a bit, whenever he is around Wyatt. It's like Wyatt was good for him, and he, possibly, good for Wyatt. Though, that is just how I interpret what I've learned about the Georgia dentist, and the Peoria "bummer". If some analysis of historical information is correct, that they had a falling out over antisemitic comments by Doc (Josephine Marcus having been Jewish), than that is indeed a sucky ending of their friendship, and John Henry Holliday's life.

Yeah, that's why I said they were "loosely organized." What I've grown to understand is that most people take one side or the other and defend it to the point of ridiculousness. Those rustlers and their CCC cohorts would have eventually been shot or shooed out of AZ by other lawmen. It just happened to be the sketchy Earp family that did it. Ike was killed about 6 years later doing outlawy things...so, there ya go.

I love watching KZbin videos about Tombstone. Mainly because I grew up there. Off and on, I lived there over 40 years. I graduated from Tombstone High School, and even went to school with both Susan Goldstein (her family owns The Longhorn Restaurant and Big Nose Kate’s Saloon) and Bill Hunley (he owns The Birdcage Theatre). I could tell you stories that would curl your cowboy boots. LOL

What was the distance between the buildings some say 15 feet? But a lot of the shootout was part way in the street, wasn't it? Time was 30 seconds and 30 shots or there abouts is that correct?

In Mason City, Iowa, right near my family lake house. There is a similar show with the Dillinger Gang bank robbery, on March 13th, 1934. It was a pretty crazy situation and the historians of the town do a reenactment of the event on the anniversary. I don't come up there during that time, because I have a full time job, but I remember that people would come to visit for a bit.

I've believed only parts of them, because of several reasons. Gossip, Gossip and Gossip being top three. Observation and Actual Evidence being @ bottom. BEST(IMO) Re-enactment/ Examination being one hosted by Kenny Rogers, many years ago.(It may have been one of HISTORY CHANNEL's) I found it very PROBABLE scenario. I found yours very interesting/w/ new info/ perspective. It appears you put sweat-equity into it. TY.

Another excellent video, Santee! I do have one issue is the use of the word "Cowboy", back in my ancestor day a "Cowboy" was a lad who had to "mother" a dogey, and for a man to do it was an embarrassing event and often called "Cowboy" as an insult. My ancestor was called a cowboy, taking care of an orphan calf and other calves for a while. Anyways, with "eyewitness" stories, often at the time, try to make themselves part of the event. I suppose what I would trust would be a newspaper wrote at the time. Anyways, excellent video Santee.

Cowboy, at that time, had not yet made the switch to being used to describe cattle workers; i.e: ranch hands. (Some places it may have already begun to be used in that way???) From what I've researched, it was used as an insult for cattle rustlers, initially, though I have heard it used in the way you stated. (That may have been the origin, but history rarely ever records etymology (word, and usage, origins) perfectly!) Eventually, it progressed to being used for any sort of brigand. If you called someone a "cowboy", then you'd likely end up in a fight, at a minimum. (However, the switch to a positive connotation varied in time and place. For example: Call someone a "cowboy" in Tombstone, at one point, and it's an insult. Call them that in Saint Joe, MO, at the same time, and it wasn't an insult. (

Nova , rana doc several years ago , on PBS ....which used information , including eye-witness accounts ......from the Tombstone town hall .......which shows / proves clearly that the shoot-out took place in a space between 2 buildings .....the back wall , of which , separated that space ....from the OK Corral ..The space was approx 16 feet wide , the shootout took less than 30 seconds .

The thing many people, and most of Hollyweird, get wrong about the shootout is that it was not a battle between good and bad. It was a battle between bad and worse. The Clantons were part of the Cochise County Cowboys. They were cattle thieves, killers, and all around bad hombres. The Earps were lawmen and wore badges. In his spare time, however, Wyatt Earp was believed to have a partnership interest in the Oriental Saloon and gambling (Faro). It was also rumored that he had some control over prostitution in the town. Wyatt had a reputation for pistol whipping anyone who stood up to him. The Earps used the law to protect their financial interests in town.
