Arkhan the Black Immortal Empires Campaign Review

I prefer Arkhan to the other Tomb Kings. He's also decent in melee for a caster and gets access to extra landmarks in places like Galbaraz and the Marshes of Madness to the north in addition to being the only character that can collect all NINE books of Nagash instead of just eight, what with him starting off with the ninth one. If you want a campaign with lots of things to do and lots of choices in terms of direction, play Arkhan.

the extra landmarks are pretty good too, i was surprised to see they bothered to make unique landmarks for arkhan since nagahsizarr is on the ass end to his start. but really, it's the extra army that just makes him the best faction of tk. such a limiting factor, that.

I find Crypt Ghouls quite useful in WH3 because they now have stalk. This makes them great for taking out artillery or for sneaking in the back on siege battles. If you get Arkhan's unique building at Nagashazzzar you only need to build the building once to effectively have unlimited access to them, so it's pretty nice.

Arkhan doesn't just get access to some vampire units. He gets access to *Beefed up* vampire units. All of them have significantly better stats in his faction than for the vampires. In my Arkhan campagin, the early game was a slaughter just because of his crypt ghouls which you get tons of while they have around 40 MA, 50 Weapon strength plus phisical resistance and stalk without any buff or levels.

I expect that Arkhan may see new mechanics added to him in the future. CA has given too many hints of Nagash eventually becoming playable, I cannot see Arkhan not getting something concerning him when he is out, even if Nagash gets his own dedicated faction.

I really don't want them to add Nagash. That just goes down a really annoying "edn times" direction that I think is a slippery slope to nowhere. That and he is such a boring ass character, even by Warhammer villain standards, with all of his backlore. I just prefer more sandbox and less narrative in my Total War.

@@IllustriousCrocoduck I think Nagash would be a really cool LL though, Imagine playing a campaign where your goal is to dominate the other undead factions and eventually snowball and destroy/conquer the world that sounds awesome to me. Alternatively he could be a really interesting endgame crisis event too, basically an overhaul to the Black Pyramid crisis to make it wayy more interesting.

Given how he was the original necromancer after Nagash, it makes no sense that he has access to no spells from the lore of Necromancy/Vampires. Any rework of him should address that and make him a hybrid lord of Death/Vampires. Like how Noctilus gets Shadows/Vampires.

I think CA needs to add some campaign stuff to endgame crisis, to fit them. For example - when arkhan collect all of 9 books and control black pyramid, he can start the ritual that will start ultimate endgame crisis - without of making the black pyramid the enemy, of cos. Then he should defend the pyramid at all the cost for 30 turns, and in that time AI would be stupidly aggressive only for player, with all of tides of enemies. And after that torture and some cool movies and quest battles, nagash would come as stupidly OP legendary lord with huuuuge faction buffs, under player control. He should not have his own faction, just replacing arkhan as faction leader, and of cos should can to confederate other tomb kings LL except settra lol. And that kind of extremely hard campaigns should be on each old faction leader - becoming true phoenix king for malekith (de and he endgame crisis), defending endtimes as karl, reclaiming everchosen status for wulfrik, destroying the cathay as grimgor and other cool campaigns for faction lore leaders. It is now little bit stupid that your own race will automatically become at war with you in endgame crisis, for example if u play as dawi lol

I think one of the biggest factors improving Arkhan's campaign (besides what legend stated here) is the option of a potentially powerful ally in Mannfred. On my current VH Arkhan campaign building up the Drakenhof Conclave on my southern border while keeping Aranessa friendly to the north has made it much easier to expand into the badlands and beyond without worrying about having to fight on two fronts with limited armies. This is especially true now that you end up dealing with Skarbrand on top of the southlands lizard-tide after dealing with Repanse, Volkmar and Settra.

In my recent campaign VH/VH mannfred died at turn 7, and all surrounding factions United together against me ignoring each other. I had hilarious much ups when I fought tick tack toe and skarrand who coordinated a joint attack against khemri, which I took before.

Besides that there is already one, it wouldn't make much sense at the moment too. One the Chaos Dwarfs release his campaign could change quite a bit. The Chaos Dwarfs could be either allies or a nightmare to deal with. A heavy armored range army, with a bit of magic and probably magic resist on all their units will be a nightmare for Ku'gath to deal with.

@Channel Name Exactly. He's been nothing but an afterthought since the first release of WH3, and it's especially obvious with IE. He migrated from the Chaos Wastes but his tech tree didn't, his main mechanic of spreading plagues doesn't even work in his starting location, and most of the enemy territory around him isn't even the right climate for him, making defeating his enemies unrewarding. Still fun, though.

​@Channel Name they are, I think the best way to counter this is the mod that allows you to choose your starting location. I find it interesting to choose different locations normally populated by Nurgle minor factions like the one near Daniel and Malus or by Kairos if you are wanting a showdown with your rival in the Great Game! It gives you variety to see different enemies to fight with at the start as well.

Great review!! A couple things that most people overlook with Arkhan, that makes him the best tomb lord IMO is: The tomb kings have notoriously slow units at the start of the game, with Arkhan you get hexwraiths and dire doggos so you can run down routing units and flank with the best of them starting from turn 1 which no other tomb king lord can do nearly as well until later on. The vampire diplomacy is awesome because you know what goes great with undead armies? Mortars. Getting an alliance with vampire coast early lets you have more artillery options to go alongside your casket of souls. Just send a lord out to uncover a couple of the vampire coasts factions and you'll have alliances before ya know it. Delete the lord after they scouted them and just recruit a new one to throw in your army. Later game go ally with Vlad or Ghorst and get a couple mortis engines. Obviously the extra army is probably the biggest reason Arkhan is the best Tomb Lord, but these smaller reasons get overlooked often IMO, and really change the gameplay and give him a big boost over the other lords.

What I love about him is you can ally with local vamps and vampire coasts and use the outpost recruitment to build and "undivided" undead army.

My favorite LL because I'm a massive Nagash fan. Arkhan was the reason I bought Warhammer 2, he was the first campaign I ever played, and if CA ever releases Nagash for Warhammer 3 I'll 100% buy the game.

HIs settlement in Nagashizzar is mine favorite of all the landmarks in the game, its very interesting increasing vamp unit cap by +100 allowing you to run full armies of hexwraiths.

Probably to do with base gameplay difficulty would be my guess. A good way to get around that would either be mods or to join their wars against distant factions, since you've already established contact with them.

I'm not sure, but maybe it's this: the Vampire Coast hates everybody else, so probably if you ever had a friendly interaction with any other faction they will dislike you for it, and if you befriend the Vampire Coast you will probably only befriend the Vampire Coast

I find Khatep to be the most enjoyable Tomb King LL because he lowers the cost of the mortuary cult, which leads to more and easier armies and heroes. And cheaper Items, that can be fused now in WH3. It's just rough not to be able to farm the research LL defeat traits, since he starts at the other end of the map.

With TKs, you can use the saved character system on lords to get as many armies as you want. It costs money and won't increase the army capacity, so if you lose the army, then you have to pay for a new saved lord each time but allow for more armies none the less. But this is basically a cheat/exploit.

just played arkhan last week in a multiplayer game and can confirm, one of the funnest factions to play right now. you're just on the edge of the southerlands thunderdome, so you can grow your own power base relatively safely and then commit to the brawl when you're ready, unlike settra, and face a good variety of factions and legendary lords then and from that point onward. _when wulfrik review?_ : )

Arkhan's campaign in WH2 I don't recall starting with your capital city, fairly sure you only got Sorceror's Islands which meant you had to fight in 2 directions at once until you secured your capital. That being said his campaign was still a breeze compared to Khatep who has very little green territory to aim for and was often forced to deal with Morathi and Maliketh early on or be eliminated.

His difficulty was so hard in Warhammer 2 that I avoided playing him. Now I get to play here at high difficulty which is nice. Side note - one of the campaigns that Legend should have lost is with Arkham. The dwarfs declared war on him early and had him dead to rights. The AI flaked though and he was able to come back.

That title goes to Khatep! the 25% discount on mortuary cult expenses applies to awakening dynasties. I've not run tests on it to see what his limit is exactly, but 25% discount is enough for 2 extra armies I'm sure!

I think it's a shame Arkhan doesn't have access to Lore of Vampires somehow. I'm not saying he should have Wind of Death or be a loremaster like Mannfred but he should have Raise Dead and Invocation of Nehek spells in his skill tree, level-locked so he unlocks them on rank 12 and 16 or something like that. Being able to recruit some VC units and Lore of Death doesn't really do him justice. Hell, why not put access to those spells in one of the books of Nagash? And untainted corruption doesn't make sense for him. At the moment all we can do is use mods or steal an immortal Necromancer hero from Mannfred. By the way if you're in the market for Mannfred's VC units as Arkhan, be on the look out for Mortis Engine and Unholy Lodestone Corpse Cart. Very good for Tomb Kings.

Arkhan the Black is I think, the best campaign in WH3 currently. Any pain points are relieved by having so many armies. He can field more and more forces and has interesting landmarks in Galbaraz (which should be moved) and Nagashizzar. Extra armies means interacting with the whole map and grabbing books quicker and easier. Hexwraiths, Dire Wolves and Fell Bats all add A LOT of value and tactical interest while playing Tomb Kings. My only complaint with him is yet ANOTHER Death caster. There is far too many of them around the map turn one for many characters.

Personally, this is a big disappointment. Why do they need to dumb ALL the campaigns down and make them trivial right from the get-go? Arkhan in TW2 was one of the very few campaigns I not only played to begin with, but actually played more than once. Largely because I love his aesthetic as a lord, but also because his start position is hella challenging. For me, no challenge in a videogame = no fun in a videogame.
