Tan paper is the best differentiation of a resource, being able to actually use white as a highlight while sketching is helping me understand light a lot

I'm in awe with this one. I like it A LOT. For me, what strikes me is how different my styles are in watercolour and in gouache. I found very quickly that I do not like to use rounds and pointed brushes with gouache, and I hate using filberts and flats in watercolour. So, evidently, I'm blocky with with gouache and flowy with watercolour. Going back and forth keeps me out of futs.

You inspire me so much. I generally paint basically only realism because I'm just not that good and simply copying an image is easier for me, but watching you paint inspires me to try more colorful and expressive paintings. Also I haven't drawn anything in over two weeks so wish me luck

I love the way you explain your process! It's so much more useful to me than a "how to do this" video. I have a number of Arleesha inspired portraits in my sketchbook, which nonetheless still look like my thing, if you see what I mean. You really are fabulous, for your openness above all.

something i love about gouache is how with each painting there is a lot of room to learn. with things like ink or markers once a decision is made and the page is covered, that’s the end of the artwork. with opaque mediums there is a lot more freedom to experiment and learn while painting, and every piece feels personal and intimate. i’m primarily a digital artist and i don’t normally have the patience for wet mediums, but whenever i feel uninspired gouache brings me back to loving the entire process.

Excellent. Very interesting video, brilliant insights, thank you. I agree, especially with your points about (if I’m understanding you correctly), 1). Your work with gouache, while different from transparent watercolors, provides an integral knowledge base that is pervasive across all media. Specifically, if I may generalize, every single media we explore all contribute to the one big knowledge pool about color, value, shapes, and so forth. 2). The dreaded ugly stage, lol! You specify that even the ugly stage manifests differently than the transparent water colors. So much to discuss here, but I don’t want to clog up your comment area. Thanks for another insightful video, Arleesha.

Complete agreement about gouache vs watercolors, it very much feels like more of a battle and evolution throughout the gouache process. U can have an idea or where ur going with it and by the end land someplace completely unexpected. Thanks for another upload its helpful to watch as a newcomer to gouache.

I use watercolor more than anything else, but I enjoy going back and forth. I have a set of Himi gouaches, and I started getting into acrylics when I took a Skillshare class on mixed media, and realized I didn't have anything I could lay down and layer over without worrying about it reactivating. I've done a couple of just-acrylic pieces since then; it's gloppier than I like (which I imagine is why you can buy fifty-twelve different kinds of mixing "mediums" for it...?) but I'm sure that's mostly a matter of practice, and being able to layer whatever colors I want, whenever I want, is really nice. I tend to switch back and forth between mediums a lot (I also do plain graphite, ink, and some colored pencil and watercolor pencil), and with the paint media, I tend to switch to a new medium that solves problems I was having with the previous medium. (See above re: not having to headdesk about reactivated paint. :P ) Some skills do translate, as you said, so that helps. And each medium has its pluses and minuses, so I get a stronger appreciation of each type of paint as I use the others.

This painting is so gorgeous. I love the colors and the depth. As you were saying the hair wasn't your favorite I was thinking how brilliant it looked. I like the colors and shapes and the fact that there was less detail to it let the more detailed hand and face come more forward. I've been super focused on learning watercolor for about 3 years. I try not to stray too often because I want to really master it but if I'm in a rut or feeling like I'd like something different I love using different mediums. It's usually a self-esteem boost, haha, because I find them easier. The skills definitely transfer over.

I find that changing out what I'm using can help with art block, and also sometimes using professional grade mediums can really open your eyes to whats possible when you've reached the limits of student grade. Like recently I've bought myself some professional watercolour paint and pure cotton paper, and I've fallen inlove with watercolour all over again.

I feel like every piece we make we learn something and improve. 🥰I really love going back to other materials for different pieces.

Omg I love the lighting and the way you colored the skin. It just feels so alive. The way you put down the colors feels sort of impressionistic. Because on their own it just seems like random color splotches but together it works really well. I wish I could be that intuitive about it because I would never have thought of putting those colors next to eachother. Or maybe it's just the lighting in the painting making those colors make sense now that I think about it. And I love the expression aswell. It just feels battered, broken and tired. They're touching their face as if it doesn't even feel real anymore. That's maybe me looking too deep into it, but regardless I love it! ❤

I learn something every time I paint. I personally think it's helpful to switch up mediums, and I do it all the time. But,. I don't think you can really *learn* a new medium until you really put in some time with it. My main medium is watercolor and I dabble in Gouache, acrylic Gouache, and oils. I don't put in enough time though so I'm only proficient in watercolors, which is good but also bad because I get frustrated with other mediums quickly and don't tough it out.

I switch up from watercolor (my beloved) to color pencil, to ink to watercolor marker a lot. A lot of what I learned from watercolor did transfer over to my other mediums, like use of value and so forth. I think switching around keeps me fresh and stimulated I get bored very easily, and switching mediums help me from growing frustrated with a medium. I like learning new mediums a lot I am hoping to try gouache next year. I also like mixing mediums too color pencil and watercolor is my new favorite.

I love trying different mediums. I often switch between digital and watercolor. However I’ve started experimenting with gouache this year because of all the hype I’ve seen about it online. So far I really like it. It seems a little closer to oil to me than acrylics do. I tried oil painting in high school, but it’s hard to find the space for it at home. And living in a snowy/cold area, I’m unable to properly ventilate during the winter. I’d love to see your style translated to oil! I bet it’d look gorgeous and earthy. ❤️
