My preferred medium is watercolor, but I used to buy a lot of gouache when I was in college (graphic design). They made us buy individual bottles of Pelikan gouache because we would go through a LOT of paint doing homework for one class in particular. What hurt the most was returning next year to a class that needed gouache and finding out your leftover bottles from last year rot. They smell horrible when they rot! I guess my experiences with gouache haven't been great, but watching artists like you makes me want to buy a high quality set and start all over again. ❤️

I actually would advise against that lol. Normal water has all sorts of things in there that can grow and feed mold (distilled is better :3) Mold also grows in enclosed spaces, that's why you have to wait till watercolors dry before putting them up. Before putting up my gouache set I put some drops of rubbing alcohol in each cup since I won't be breaking out the set for a bit. It reconstituted the paints and also helped to kill anything that might be growing. Just a heads up ^^

This was a great video! I was so anxious about my paints because I was afraid they would dry out too fast. That piece you created was beautiful, I've never seen this type of art before but it's so impactful. Around 8:48 I actually started tearing up because of the emotion I was feeling coming off the piece. The contrast between blue and red is gorgeous it pushed that emotion even more. Because of that I kind of wish you hadn't added the teardrops at the end because I really don't think it was needed. The emotion was pushed through perfectly just by the shape of the eyes and the color palette, adding the teardrops for me became too literal like now you're telling me that this person is sad instead of letting me feel it for myself. I am not trying to be rude this is just something I noticed and thought I would share. I'm in art school right now and critiques are a big part of that and something I've noticed myself doing a lot more. Again this piece is absolutely gorgeous and I'm not trying to be rude

Hmm, I thought they were light reflecting off the cheekbone- they're kind of too off to the side for tears, and it would be a bit on the nose for a piece like this. The same colour is used for other highlights across the face, hence why I came to that conclusion.

I have the miya Himi set and the Arrtx set of the jelly gouache I got some for an artist friend at the same time and we have both been painting with it ever since. I love this paint, it layer's beautifully and blends and mixes well and they really work well on black paper as well.They stay wet for a long time thanks to the way the box and lid is designed,and they are great value for the quanitity of paint you get in each cup. I like to work in impasto in acrylics and these gouache can to a degree be used in a similar way which I love. These paints allow you to work boldly.I like how just the fact both the Himi and Arrtx having 18 colours encourage you to mix to get more colours and both brands work well together and having both gives a really good workable palette of colours.Tube gouache can dry in the tubes which can lead to wastage,but these paints stay wet for a long time and can be revived easily which makes them outlast tube gouache.I think these jelly gouache sets are an inspired invention and it's easy to see why they have become so popular. They are really great to work with and even when revived retain their creamy texture when painting and don't lose their intensity of colour either when revived,it is best to use distilled water to revive them,so that mould doesn't grow in them when the lid is closed again.The fact you've had your sets so long and they can still be revived shows what great paints they actually are. Your painting is really emotive and shows how quickly these brilliant paints can build up a finished piece.Hope 2021 brings you and your fmaily lots on new directions and that you art continues to evolve and that new inspiration finds you in the new year and thank you for a year (2020) of brilliant and inspiring videos.

Glad I found this vid. I've been looking for some videos for artists who had let their jelly gouache sit for maybe years instead of just months and/or sit unused for an extended period. I have some Magicfly brand jelly gouache (that's no longer made, I think Himi bought them out,) that's about 3 years old. I did the same thing to revive it and a bit of glycerin is recommended too, which I haven't tried yet. But I thought it was still pretty good after sitting for a long time. Jelly gouache is a fun painting medium. So really, if you're not gonna be using it for a long time, it's fine to let it dry and crack...the drying out can help prevent it from getting moldy too. If mine had developed mold, I'd just pitch it. No great loss. I wouldn't use it for original paintings to sell or hang on the wall for a long time bc of unknown lightfastness and archival quality. But you can always make prints if you do something you want to preserve or sell and just to enjoy painting freely with it! 👍 p.s. Currently Himi is selling a pastel set of 18 colors on Amazon. I bought it and it is really nice. The soft colors are wonderful. I've only swatched them out, but so far, so good 😊

I have 2 sets of himi, one is the 24 color set and I bought the 18 color set last Christmas as a gift for myself. It's a secondhand set and it's all dried up. The seller sold it to me for a very low price. I finished reactivating them yesterday and the quality is still the same. 🥺✊🏻 i just started using gouache last November, and I fell inlove with himi the first time I tried it. ❤️

I totally agree about the eyes, I get real emotional whenever I do a eye portrait because they can portray so much with out needing the rest of the face, eyes are so beautiful.

So, something I've done with my Himi set , was stick cellophane over it. It's been about a year and it's still mostly moist. I sprayed the tops of the dryer ones and they reactivated so well! I was impressed for sure.

I recently purchased a set but haven’t opened them yet for two reasons, the first I was worried they would dry out before I got much use of them, so good to know you can bring them back to life, and the second is because I’ve never used gouache. I am fairly new to painting and am nervous to get started with them. Thank you 😊

I am so glad to know the paints last for a very long time. I have always wanted some but thought they were unusable after only a few months. I love how you paint, although this painting was difficult for me to see. It reminds me of someone who was burned; with the red around the eyes and the white like gauze or medical wrapping.

I bought poster paints when I was in 8th grade and now I am a senior and I still use them to this day, granted I technically turned them into watercolors so I can ration it during lockdown, I still think its cool that they have enough pigment that I can mix them to a base and still be colorful.

I got my himi set back in june, and living in the south east, its normally pretty humid here so my set is almost overly moist sometimes and even when they do dry out a little a quick spray of water and putting the lid back on fixes them overnight ... I find it so interesting how the paint is affected by where you live Also I wish my favorite thing to draw are eyes because I still haven't mastered the art of drawing two eyes that look somewhat similar in size and shape... my favorite thing to draw are definitely lips ALSO HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE :)

Did you had any problems with mold in it? I live in a very humid place and my watercolor got a superficial mold in it
@anushreesengupta5053
@anushreesengupta5053 4 жыл бұрын
Sparkling Wine oof that sucks... since the himi set is pretty airtight I have never gotten any mold in it ... sometimes I do purposely let the top layers slightly dry out so that if I’m carrying it with me some place else in my room the colors aren’t contaminating each other and to possibly avoid any chance of molding
@anushreesengupta5053
@anushreesengupta5053 4 жыл бұрын
Sparkling Wine Also since this is gouache, it might have different binders than the watercolors you have... it might be that your watercolors were made of a honey base or something that’s more organic and that’s why it grew mold more easily... I’m no professional though

I have been using miya Himi Gouache for like a year maybe, and when I don't use them for a while they become really hard and yeah I reactivate them similarly. I find this gouache set awesome, there is plenty of paint that I don't have to worry about running out of it. And the results are satisfactory!

Miya also make sets of jelly acrylics too,in larget sets of 24 and larger sets. I have a larget set of these too.And ahain they stay workable for a long time too as the lid on the cases threy come in works in the same way as the lids on the jelly gouache set.

I haven’t painted in over 5 years, I stopped doing art because of personal reasons that caused me to lose my emotional capacity for art. The himi Guache pallets are making me want to paint again, even though I’ve never been good at water color… I’ve always been an acrylic painter. It’s good to know that if I do buy this product and can’t find the capacity to paint, the paint can survive

I remember as a kid reactivating dried out gouache and thinking it's pique traditional media performance compared to my broken-lid pencils and markers that dry out easily. Since then i learned a lot about acrylic paints, oils, watercolors and various dry and liquid media and my opinion hasn't changed at all.

this interests me because a face with just ears or just a mouth or a nose wouldn't be as eery, it would just feel undone. we would learn so little about the person whereas with the eyes we learn so much more. the eyes truly are the windows to the soul.
