I spent over four years in The Old Guard, taking part in hundreds of military funerals. It wasn't until I was about to leave that I took the time to speed walk through and appreciate Arlington, taking plenty of pictures for a final project for my US History course. I conducted a few dozen more funerals there in 2018, including the first internment in the Millenium Project Expansion--two Unknown Soldiers found at the Manassas Battlefield. It's a somber but inspiring place. Also, for those wondering about the Soldiers in horses in front of the Sailors, that is the US Army's Caisson Platoon. They take part in every Full Honors funeral regardless of service branch. There's a lot more to see, including Pershing, Audie Murphy, a few of the Iwo Jima flag raisers, David Hackworth (semi-controversial but a true hero and great author), the Confederate Section (where a Soldier that shares my name lies), and the grave of Leslie Coffelt, a White House Police (later incorporated into the Secret Service) officer who helped to stop Puerto Rican nationalists from assassinating President Truman. I could write all night, but it seems that Jordan mostly stuck to the west of the Cemetery for this vlog and I hope to see a follow up with more. There are numerous memorials, the oldest burials are in the former rose garden of Mrs. Lee on the grounds of Arlington House, the spiteful Quartermaster General of the Union Army and founder of Arlington National Cemetery, Montgomery Meigs, is buried in the section near Old Post Chapel on Fort Myer (I believe this is where Abner Doubleday is buried as well), and of course Section 60 is where many of those lost in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried, including a number of my friends. Finally (for now), Admiral Boorda, the first Sailor to advance from enlisted ranks to become Chief of Naval Operations, is buried in Section 64. He took his own life when his wearing of relatively minor valor awards (if there's such a thing, but this was a Commendation and Achievement Medal, not the Navy Cross or Medal of Honor) was called into question by David Hackworth (mentioned above). Okay, I'm done...on to more KZbin.

@@DazewithJordantheLion .....it’s actually Robert E Lee’s house. His family left before the Union troops got there and the Secretary of War decided to start burying Union dead there so the family would never want to return. Years later Lee’s son sued the government and won. He took a settlement over removing the bodies

Oh my Jordan this is the cemetary vlog of cemetery vlogs!! Arlington is so impressive!! So many historical figures there! I was impressed with the Thurgood Marshal and RBG graves because they were such huge pioneers for civil rights and women's rights. The Kennedy Graves were so simple. Nothing fancy at all which was surprising. Bobby and Ted very simple markers. I think its so sad Bobby was killed he would have made a great president. He was a champion of the poor and civilrights and it makes me sad that the ones who actually want to do good are assassinated. I hope one day that changes. P.S. I thought that procession that you caught on the video was cool. I wonder who that was they were taking to the grave?

Glad you were able to capture a procession. I have a family friend and her daughter buried there, The daughter, Sam Huff (and not an abbreviation, her name was just Sam), was offered a modeling contract for The Gap company at 16. She graduated from HS a year early and was the band's drum major. She told her parents, she wanted to enlist in 2004. Her recruiter thought she was crazy. 5ft tall and barely 100lbs. She did enlist at 17 to an MP company. In 2005, she was assigned to Bahgdad. She was a PFC and scheduled to man the 50 cal. Her commander instead has her drive the HMV as they escorted a dignitary from the city back to the airport. An IED went off right under the driver's set, causing severe injuries. She told her Sgt, while waiting for evac, "Tell my mom I love her and my dad to make his music." She died the following day, 2 months shy of her 19th birthday. Her mother and my childhood friend passed a few years later. A former Marine of Vietnam, she is buried with her daughter, Section 60, Site 8109.

Jordan,, this vlog was awesome ! My friend , I live in montana for 31 years But from NY. I was 10 years old when JFK. Was shot have been to Arlington national cemetery countless times it was only 4 hours away from where I lived back then, I remember the first time I saw JFK s grave it looked nothing like it does now.. There was a mound of dirt ( I think) with a lot of military hats going in a circle around the flame. It looked cool, the first time I saw the grave was in 1965 with my school on a field trip. Back then we also toured the WHITE house ( imagine them letting people in now ? ) things have changed do Look much since then. Last time I was in Washington was 2011 .not to sound like Bob Hope ,, but thanks for the memories !!! Frank from montana...

I saw a video on the tube a while back that showed that JFK'S grave was actually dug up and moved. It was done in the middle of the night and Bobby Kennedy was there. If i'm remembering right I think Bobby had them open the casket. The reason they did it was because of the eternal flame. To start with the flame was hooked to a propane bottle but I figure they probably hooked it up to natural gas. I also found a book recently on how all the presidents died and where they are buried and it told about them moving his grave.

I believe cemeteries that honor our past leaders and our vets, are a fitting tribute to these men and women. We live in FL, and my Husband and I, will be buried in one also, as my Husband is a vet!! I remember the day President Kennedy died, it was the first time I ever saw a nun cry. The sad part of Patrick's death, in the 70's, there was a new drug to help with pre-term lung problems. I also remember the day Robert died! Ted was my Senator before I moved!! This family as a whole, have given their lives in service to this country. The Special Olympics was created by Eunice Kennedy Shiver, in honor of her sister. I watched RBG help create many laws to help women! Roe vs Wade became law one month after I was married!! TY to all who have served our Country with honor and dignity!!

I never thought I would see the day that you would show my relatives. Not only that but you showed them first. I am a extended family member of the Tafts. William married my family member, Helen. Helen was either my many times great aunt or a distance cousin who acted like an aunt. Here the thing that many historians got wrong. It was believed that they started courting in their home state of Ohio. It wasn’t. They were publicly first seen courting in Ohio but they actually started counting in New England because they both had family members from there. My family had own this house and it was in my family for many generations until my great great grandmother died (I am pretty sure she would have been the last generation in my family to know William and Helen). But at this house there’s a cemetery and only my family members can be buried there. William and Helen apparently had plans to be buried there before it was decided that they would be buried at Arlington cemetery. Even though they are not buried at my family cemetery, they still have headstones there because they are still family. While my family no longer owns this home, we still have access to go onto the property to go to our family cemetery.

Hey Jordan, The house with the pillars on the hill above the JFK grave was the South's General Lee's home. This is definitely on my bucket list of places to go. JFK's probably my favorite president and interests me the most. It's really sad what happened to him and RFK. JFK could've been an even better president and RFK could've been a great president too. Wonder who the funeral procession was for at the end.

Just a point of interest, but Joseph Kennedy's stone is just a memorial stone, as his body was never recovered after his plane blew up in mid air during a WWII mission. Hard as it is to believe, but from the books I've read, Joseph Kennedy Jnr was even more charismatic and handsome than his younger brother John Kennedy.
