Yes, the Illinois Central/City of New Orleans was and is very real. My grandfather was a conductor on it for his entire career, including throughout the Great Depression, when he began hauling huge bags of candy on his route to throw out to the children and adults who would come out to see the train pass by. They nicknamed him Candy and I thought that was his real name. My father (his son) was born and raised in Illinois but after 4 years in WW2 he met and married my mother, in Memphis Tennessee and had my brother, sister and me. When I was 5 we caught the Illinois Central in Memphis and rode up to Illinois to visit my father’s family, which was the only time I met my grandfather in person. He died just a few years later and I saw his obituary and found out his real name wasn’t Candy. Great reaction- you two, and this song, brought back many great memories. Thank you!

My grandfather was a railroad engineer, out of Chicago. He was the man that they called when the circus came to town, because he could move the cars gently. I guess it's not a good idea to scare the lions and elephants.

Alice’s Restaurant is an 18 minute song by Arlo Guthrie. It is quirky and funny but is also referring to something quite serious. It is a minor tradition that radio stations play it every Thanksgiving.

Steve Goodman saw Arlo and his band perform at a local bar. After they were done for the night Steve approached Arlo and asked if he could play this song for him. Arlo looked up from his beer and replied ‘you’ve got til I’m done with my beer’. Steve’s song impressed him and he and his group recorded it. The rest as they say is history.

Thanks for sharing your memories of riding on a train with your grandfather. I love trains too. When I was a kid (in the early 1960s) we would take the train from a bustling Union Station in Los Angeles to my mom's hometown of Uvalde, Texas to visit her parents and siblings. Very good memories of riding on the train and summer days with my grandpa and cousins.

Arlo Guthrie is a folk singer-songwriter from the 60's-70's, known for singing songs of protest against social injustice & storytelling songs. He followed in the tradition of his father Woody Guthrie. I had his greatest hits album. His most famous song is "Alice's Restaurant" which is a satirical talking blues song about 18 min. long. Other hits were "City Of New Orleans" & "Massachusetts".

Arlo Guthrie is the son of the much more famous folk singer , Woody Guthrie , from the 1930's . Maybe you should check out some of his songs .The beat of many folk songs and Southern Rock is the rhythm of the old steam locomotives going down the track When I was a kid we lived about half a mile from the main Train line between Birmingham and Atlanta . Sometimes we would get stuck at the railroad crossing of the road for what seemed like forever as trains of more than 100 cars rolled by

Yes, we unfortunately lost Steve to leukemia just as he was about to erupt on the national stage. He was very well-known in Chicago, and he had a live-music bar named Somebody Else's Troubles after a song of his of the same name, right across the street from the Biograph Theater, where Dillinger was caught. Some of his songs were funny and some serious, but they were all great. We used to ride the City of New Orleans from Chicago to Champaign-Urbana, IL, where the main campus of U. of IL was when I was in college there, and it was exactly as described here.

I saw Arlo in concert four times, only once in a concert hall… with John Prine. All the other times were in park settings, once with Ramblin' Jack Elliott, once with his daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie, and once with just him and his band. But every time he had such a great rapport with his audience. A great story teller in both words and song. I've also enjoyed some of his concerts on video with Pete Seeger.

I love trains so much that I retired to a small town that has many trains come through everyday and having not too much to do now, I watch the trains and people at the station quite often. I also was lucky enough to ride the City of New Orleans from Champagne, Illinois all the way to New Orleans once. It was a very pleasant trip and I would like to ride it again, but harder to travel with some age and aches/pains now. I rode before they changed the route through Mississippi, on the older routing along the Illinois Central railroad. It still runs under Amtrak, which is the National Passenger Railway service in the USA now. The part of the trip through the cotton fields of Mississippi and along part of the Mississippi River in Louisiana was at night for me, but I would like to see it in daylight. Train travel can be slower and require patience in parts of our very vast country but if you have the time and are not easily upset by being an hour or two/three late, it can be very nice. Good reaction and very nice you tube channel you have.

During the 1950's many railroad lines were abandoned with the adventure of new highways and affordable cars. Shortsighted leaders are a plaque everywhere and not just on railroads. Loved your reaction, if you research Steve Goodman you will find many great songs. Us music fans were robbed of his great talent. Rest in peace Steve.

Great to have a beer or two after work on Friday evening, listen to music and look out and see the Bay Area, including a portion of track that runs along the Pacific coast. Yes, and the blue-suited man in the cap we see in the video is called the "conductor." He collects the tickets, but is basically in charge of the train while it is moving. The "Pullman porters" that they mention are the ones that handle baggage for the train passengers and generally take care of their needs. In the past, a lot of these occupations were almost hereditary, fathers passing then on to their sons for generations.

Arlo Guthrie is the son of Woody Guthrie a famous folk singer/writer during the Depression. Arlo writes and sings, but he is well know for long funny stories. His most famous is Alice's Restaurant. It's a long humous story about visiting a friend for Thanksgiving that wanders into an anti war song about the Vietnam War draft sign up. People listen annually. When rail travel was more common, there were regular trains that were given names. The City of New Orleans was one of those trains that went from Chicago to New Orleans. It took about a day to go down and a day to go back.

Re: STEVE GOODMAN... he was best friends with John Prine (how's that for a talent pool?) he has several great songs, you should try "My Old Man" (a tribute to his Dad) or the hilarious "You never even called me by my name" or for a taste of Americana..."go cubs go"...tou won't be disappointed with any of these.

Steve Goodman wrote this song SO MASTERFULLY that I don't think I've EVER heard a "bad" recording of this song. Arlo's interpretation is my all time favorite but both Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson each have their own BRILLIANT interpretations.

Just a little trivia side note; One of the most important influences in the career of Bob Dylan was the father of Arlo Guthrie, Woody Guthrie, who Dylan visited in the hospital on the first day he arrived on the East Coast from Minnesota.

"Bound for Glory" (1976) is a biographical film about Arlo Guthrie's father, Woody Guthrie. 2.5 hours, so a bit long but good for a cold Saturday night watch. And if you don't know, Woody Guthrie was a singer, too, important enough to have a movie made about him. Starring David Carradine.

Never get tired of hearing this song and especially Arlo's version!! I love Arlo's music and his father's, Woody Guthrie, as well. If you get a chance check out "Cowboy Song" and "Gypsy Davy" by Arlo. I think you will enjoy both songs.

Wonderful song! I suggest you explore more Steve Goodman songs. He was a good soul with a joyous spirit. He was also a close friend of John Prine.

I loved this song when it came out. Made me nostalgic even at the time. Beautiful song, and I loved Andre's reaction to it. I've only been on a couple of trains, but I loved them. If you love trains, you might want to listen to "The Canadian Railroad Trilogy" by Gordon Lightfoot and and "Trains" by Al Stewart.

I don't know if it's still there, but in the late 1990s, I took the City of New Orleans train from North Mississippi to New Orleans. When you get to Lake Ponchitrain in the Louisiana bayou country, you can see water on both sides of the train as it goes over bridges and causeways.

Arlo Guthrie has many songs you can react to. "Alices Restaurant" "The Motorcycle Song" "The Pause of Mr. Claus" "The FBI Song" among many. Most are humorous, some serious

In the USA the highway system and airlines have replaced the railroads. The train The City Of New Orleans was the name of the route. I believe it was cancelled some years ago. But, possibly, it's been reinstated...? The name of the national passenger train company is AMTRAK. You can research it online and get all the info. My wife and I have traveled on AMTRAK and enjoyed it.

I used to ride the "City of New Orleans" back and forth to and from college at the University of Illinois in Urbana Illinois, to and from Chicago's Union Station. It's the only train I know of that has a name, which I suppose it got on the Chicago end of its journey because the other end is the actual city of New Orleans in the state of Louisiana.

Other trains have names, though I don't know how many. Living out West, I've seen at least "The City of Los Angeles" and "The City of Phoenix." To my great sadness, I've never ridden either one. We took a short Amtrak ride along the Pacific Coast Highway not too long ago and it was so beautiful. When our kids were small, we used to ride trains a lot because they loved it so much.
