I think the main reasons they chose to remake TTYD over PM64 are these: 1) PM64 is on NSO, and it's been rereleased on Virtual Console on both Wii and Wii U. TTYD has never been rereleased 2) GameCube remakes/remasters are hot right now 3) TTYD doesn't have to remake character sprites. They have all the old vector artwork from the OG game. That meant much less of a workload than PM64 would require. It's just adding onto the models to have fancy new back poses and extra animations.
@sentientwaffle6696 Жыл бұрын
I just hope there is a classic mode setting I can use like The Master Chief Collection to satisfy purists like me. I don't care why it's happening. I just want the old experience back in every single aspect of the game. If it doesn't happen, that's fine. I'll be let down with it like I was when it was announced but I get that we can't always get everything we want. This is a new TTYD, not the old one.
@narcosis1507 Жыл бұрын
how do you know they dont have the assets for PM64?
@DaNintendude Жыл бұрын
@narcosis1507 They do, but PM64 was sprite-based. TTYD's character designs were made using vector artwork, which can be scaled up to any resolution. They'd have to make all new models, or create new ones using other assets as a base.
@goatsoup Жыл бұрын
It was stated in an interview for PM64 that they used the Super Famicom development tools to make the 2D graphics for that game, meaning they were drawn as low resolutions sprites for that game first and have no vector/source artwork like every later game. @@narcosis1507

I’d say it played a big part for sure at the bare minimum. A lot of us were just very vocal about TTYD & the classic formula for so long & a lot of people’s voices ringing that, us included, spread like wildfire so it was clear most people rung those same or similar tunes across Nintendo/Mario/Paper Mario fans. The fact they’re raising the call to remaster TTYD in making it a remake instead feels like it’s signifying more. At least we know they heard us & are throwing us a bone but between TTYD’s MO is everything Mario couldn’t be throughout the 2010s, a lot of Mario games on Switch breaking from those standards/rules (Odyssey, Rabbids, Wonder, Peach Showtime, etc.) and Nintendo’s re-embracing the one Paper Mario they couldn’t replicate by even a decent margin (& they repurpose assets for these games alot, CS is for TOK so this remake doing the same’s likely), I think this dare I say maybe a safe bet we’re getting what we want when the next new Paper Mario comes around. Full hope has been restored & for good reason. ❤

@kksmith2282 Жыл бұрын
I honestly wonder if it was a combination of things. Like, you even mentioned the interviews asking about a Thousand Year Door remake or talking about the restrictions put on them. So they were seeing this from a few sides. I kinda wonder if one of those sides was internally. I can't imagine a lot of the developers were happy being so hamstrung on what ideas were allowed, especially when you see other games getting away with being weird with Mario. And even Origami King felt like it was really trying to push up against that line as hard as it could with the dumb restrictions they were limited by (for... some reason? I still don't understand what happened there). I just kind of wonder if this is a battle they've been trying to fight internally for awhile now and the fan outcry maybe gave them some extra ammunition to say "see, people want this!" Pure guess on my part mind you. Either way, I think the biggest reason is probably just the timing working out perfectly. Nintendo needs cheap, easy to produce stuff to put out in the Switch's dying years while the main dev teams move on to Switch 2 projects. They had Origami King on the Switch that they could probably cannibalize an engine from to do this port (and subsequently that might also be a reason it wasn't a Super Paper Mario remake - that game is too different). There's obvious interest in Thousand Year Door while Paper Mario 64 can easily be played on Switch already and the game is old enough that a remake makes sense. In a way, the stars kinda aligned for this one I think.
@SuperWiiBros08 Жыл бұрын
Not only I think the outcry and movement helped TTYD get a remake, but I like to believe Intelligent System is aware of the complains and want to come back to the original RPG formula, so a remake of the best one will help them understand what made it great to then let the next entry be an actual RPG

There was no one person or movement that single-handedly made the TTYD remake real, but voices like yours were very influential to those who may not have been willing to take a side without some guidance, and definetely boosted morale of the old guard like myself to know that we weren't alone in our seemingly futile stance. So thank you for everything you have done to help the community Arlo.😁 I have always stood tall and proud for my love for this game and what Paper Mario could become if Nintendo would just re-embrace their past success, and have fought countless people who were blissfully unaware of the nature of the situation or just couldn't bear the sight of someone telling Nintendo that their philosophy is wrong but the outcry of fans in the West and the East by ensuring that new PM games didn't sell too well has finally persuaded Nintendo to at least try the old formula again. And now that the our time had come we need to milk it for all its worth. Tell every Nintendo fan you know to buy this game everyone!!! If this fails now by falling into obscurity we have no one but ourselves to blame if Paper Mario just goes back to being gimmicky and bland. Speak with your wallets now or forever hold your peace, that that speaks louder to Nintendo than any social media post.

If you look at the development timelines of recent Paper Mario games, there is actually a lot of evidence that Nintendo ARE aware, at least somewhat, of fan reception to these games. Color Splash was stated, I think in the same 2016 interview referenced in this video, to be started work on IMMEDIATELY after Sticker Star, leaving no time to gauge critical reception. And after that game came out, we got Origami King, which does feel like it attempts to respond to the criticisms of Sticker Star and Color Splash by creating a new battle system and adding partner...ish characters. The way I see it, Origami King comes out and gets a mixed reception, Intelligent Systems doesn't have a new idea for a PM game or are looking for something to make for Switch before the next system comes out, and they throw their hands up and say "Alright, let's remake the one people keep asking for"

To me TTYD Remake is a confluence of reasons that lead to them both not having an idea for a new Paper Mario but a need for a more robust Mario RPG. 1. Alpha Dreams closure means no Mario and Luigi 2. Mario movie happens as a direct result of Nintendo opening up their licensing options 3. Peach Showtime is planned to capitalize the new influx of young casual players from the movie. Nintendo has TWO empty slots for Mario RPGs, but no empty slots for a super casual game the likes of Sticker Star or Color Splash. The option of remastering previous RPGs seems valid, especially considering we're nearing the end of Switch's lifespan. This is 100% happening because they've found a new scapegoat for a casual adventure game and whatever potential ideas they have for new Mario RPGs isn't ready yet.

@Rubberman202 Жыл бұрын
I mean, the "Remaster Thousand Year Door" thing started in 2019, so it's quite possible that Nintendo and Intelligent systems saw it while in mid-development of The Origami King and decide "...ok, I guess this is what people really want". It's really hard to say with Nintendo; sometimes they listen to fans, like with The Legend of Zelda series (The Wind Waker was too cartoony, Twilight Princess was darker and more realistic, Skyward Sword was too linear, Breath of the Wild brought back the open exploration as seen in the first Zelda, Nintendo seemingly had a consistent continuity for Zelda before forgetting about it and treating each game as it's own stand-alone thing, they introduced the timeline, etc. etc.), whereas other times they're oddly stubborn and resistant to listening to fan feedback. Some of it comes from a certain amount of creative integrity, like they don't want their vision of the game to be compromised by what the loudest voices in the audience say, but at the same time, Nintendo doesn't really make the kind of visionary ground-breaking games that would be rejected by the masses so much as they just make games they *think* people would find fun to play, and at that point it just feels like they have their heads up their own ass telling people that THEY'RE way of playing a game is enjoyable and insisting that they'll enjoy it too (I'm reminded of Star Fox Zero and how Shigeru Miyamoto and the other developers for the game just told players to "get used to" the controls, despite being awkward, unintuitive, and mostly there just to justify using the Wii U Gamepad's screen and the TV screen in tandem). There was definitely a level of arrogance and even some bitterness from producer Kensuke Tanabe whenever people asked why isn't Paper Mario: The Origami King isn't an RPG like the first two games, continuously telling people to just play the game for what it is and stop pretending it's something it's not, even though he (as part of a misguided attempt to adjust to Miyamoto's criticism of Paper Mario on the Nintendo 3DS) is mostly to blame for Paper Mario no longer being an RPG and making a conscious decision NOT to be like the first two Paper Mario games ever since. But getting back to the topic at hand, it's weird that it got to this point to begin with. You'd think that after the incredibly poor reception of Paper Mario: Sticker Star, and ESPECIALLY the mediocre reception and sales of Paper Mario: Color Splash, they would have gone back to the RPG formula sooner. It reminds me of how Mario Party did the whole "everyone's in a car moving across the board together" thing for two games before finally getting the message that no one liked that, except Mario Part 9 came out in 2012 and Mario Part 10 came out in 2015 and they finally started going back to Mario Party's roots with Super Mario Party in 2018, whereas it to Nintendo and Intelligent Systems over a freaking DECADE for Paper Mario to go back to what it was with this remake. Granted, development time for Paper Mario is much longer than an average Mario Part game it seems, but even then, it still kind of baffles me why the people behind these games made The Origami King they way it is, like the game felt so much like it wanted to be like the older Paper Mario games but for whatever reason couldn't, like they were restraining themselves from doing so for whatever reason... My ultimate hope is that, thanks to the "Remaster Thousand Year Door" campaign, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems will finally be free to let Paper Mario be what it was and evolve from there. You can still experiment and try new things without throwing the baby out with the bath water, as they say.

Part of me likes to believe that the reason we got a Super Mario RPG remake is because of how consistently vocal fans were to see Geno in a game again. Otherwise, why wait until NOW to make it? I think the same logic applies to Paper Mario. From Sticker Star to now, every time a new Paper Mario game came out and didn’t do so well critically, there have always been vocal comparisons to TTYD. So I wouldn’t count out the power that fans have so quickly.

I’m reminded of the “Operation Starfall” campaign (that also launched in 2019, coincidentally enough), the whole point of which was to get a sequel to Super Mario RPG, have the original game remade, and/or see Geno and Mallow in more modern games. They even sent Nintendo a book of all the signatures, letters, and fan art they collected right to Nintendo of America (who sent back a bunch of neat stuff like bookmarks and pins). We did eventually get that remake, but was Operation Starfall partially responsible for it? Hard to say, to be honest. You never know with these kinds of things…

One thing I will disagree on is super paper mario, I understand that the gameplay wasnt the most exciting thing in the world, and that the "combat" was extremely simplified to mario's 2d platformer roots. However, to me it felt like the action was a lot more constant without the random enemy encounters, and some fights were genuinely cool thanks to the variety like the space battle against Mr. L, and the undertale style battle against the 3 headed chain chomp. But above all else, it has THE best story told in a mario game period, tackling several issues with genuine emotion which we just dont ever see in mario. The closest we ever got was rosalina's story, but that was a pretty quick one and done. I get that some people prefer "simple" mario plots, my problem is that thats an overwhelming majority of mario games. Im not saying every mario game ever has to have themes of losing loved ones, identity crises, the heat death of the universe and all that, but it would be nice to have more games that arent just "bowser bad go git em". Ive played the first paper mario and super only, and Id say despite the combat being a bit less fun I think its still the better one. Ive seen playthroughs of TTYD and yeah its the best i wont dispute that, its the perfect middle ground. But i think at the very least if they were going to drastically change the gameplay loop, transitioning back to a more "platformer-y" feel was better than... Well whatever the past 3 games have been doing.

1000% could not have said this all better myself. Man I just love Super so much and it sucks they went from it straight to the garbage of every game after it 😭

I've never played TTYD and haven't played a Paper Mario game outside of 64, but the infectious adoration for this game from you and many others has convinced me to at least support the release and give it a go. I may have passed on Pikmin since I don't like time constraints, but I'm gonna give TTYD a fair shot.

I’m writing before watching the video. If I had to guess, Nintendo saw that people didn’t like the style of sticker star and color splash and assumed that meant people specifically didn’t like that style. And at that point they switched to the Origami King format until somewhat late in development of that game they found that people were more so just looking for the old style back and that’s why we’re getting TTYD (also 20th anniversary helps that).
@geschnitztekiste4111 Жыл бұрын
The only „style“ people want is a believable world with varied characters and stories, and the idea that Intelligent Systems would be surprised by that is so funny to me like DUH that was the point of the series to begin with

Overall, I think Intelligent Systems listens to the fans of their franchises a lot more than we think they do. In terms of FE, Fates was a response to how Awakening's map design was a little lackluster in a lot of places and didn't quite feel like an "old-school" FE game with Conquest, while with Birthright, still catering to those who started with Awakening and wanted more of what it had to offer, while overall trying to make the story more complicated and interesting in comparison to Awakening (though mostly for worse.) Then, seeing the fallout from Fates, Shadows of Valentia was made to get a better focus on story and characters and then with Three Houses, even though IS didn't directly make that game, was made to fully capitalize on the potential Fates had with multiple routes that you didn't have to additionally buy. Heck, even Warioware: Move It seems like a response to how Get It Together wasn't quite a "traditional" Warioware game and that the Joycons have a lot of potential for microgames. It seems that Nintendo as a whole, while still definitely not always listen to what fans have to say, seem a lot more receptive to what fans have to say now than they did in the last two generations, given how many of the Switch's titles are exactly what fans are asking for. Even Pokemon might make some changes to their internal development cycle if some recent interviews are to go by. I can absolutely see how the Switch's successor, probably due out next year, could have even more of this and I couldn't be more excited. Who knows, maybe even an FE4 Remake DOES exist (though that might just be hopeful thinking on my part.)

In my opinion, yes, in the sense that it showed Nintendo that this was the Paper Mario game to remake specifically. I’m sure they wouldn’t have if they weren’t planning on a remake, but they were probably planning on remakes as the games other than Wonder to wind down the Switch’s life cycle, and it would not surprise me at all if TTYD was considered before 64 or Super thanks to its very vocal fanbase

I honestly feel like they were going to do a paper Mario remake of either the original or TTYD but because the vocal majority was paper Mario TTYD and Arlo’s influenced helped drive it, I would say it definitely helped decide which title would get the remake.
@TimDespairBear11 Жыл бұрын
I think the original being remade was never going to happen just because you can already play it on the switch. For example Mario rpg isn’t on nso and Nintendo is remaking it. Just my opinion though I have no clue their reason. I don’t think Nintendo will ever add GameCube emulation purposely to remaster the games like Pikmin 1 and 2 and Metroid prime .
@bobpotato1231 Жыл бұрын
While a 64 remake first might sound like a good idea it doesn't actually make sense. TTYD is just a better game, and feels much more modern. Because the stories are only barely connected it doesn't matter which people play first.
@bobpotato1231 Жыл бұрын
@@TimDespairBear11 Problem with this argument is that most of the gamecube remasters sell like shit. Metroid Prime did absolutely awful numbers and when that's the best gamecube game and it's selling like that it tells you gamecube should probably just go on NSO. The TTYD remake will sell much better, but that's because it's an actual remake. People want to play it even if they can already play the original, and even if they just don't enjoy playing retro games. And they can keep doing that with GC on NSO.
@TimDespairBear11 Жыл бұрын
@@bobpotato1231 Metroid prime was pretty much a full remake as well. All of the textures were updated. Metroid always kinda sells bad honestly, and prime was shadow dropped with no hype or marketing behind it. dread sold decent but it’s never as popular as Mario or Zelda. Its unfortunate as it’s my favorite franchise. Imagine if they remastered melee or wind waker, those would sell in droves. Im almost convinced GameCube nso will never happen but we’ll see.

As someone who's been at a bunch of AAA studios, though not Nintendo specifically, here's what probably happened: There are likely people inside Nintendo who were impassionately arguing to remake thousand year door for many years. This is inevitable. All large companies have people arguing for all the positions at all times, and only appear to march in lockstep from the outside. The "if we get enough public noise for it, we might" is a signal that the voices were VERY loud already, and wanted to reach for public comments to support their internal arguments. I've done this myself, there's something about showing a massively upvoted reddit post or massively liked tweet from actual players that just feels REAL in a way market data or theoretical arguments don't feel real. I've often used such posts myself when augmenting my own case. So you're right to doubt that your campaign by itself stirred an impassive Nintendo to action, but your campaign was like handing out water to the marathoners, you gave them support and fuel to push through the remake. That surely made a difference in making their jobs easier, and helping them get it over the finishline. Great job.
@Kango2347 ай бұрын
I have never worked in an AAA studio, but I've heard of this happening multiple times and saw it with my own eyes when Guilty Gear Strive put out at least 3 different surveys asking people how important good netcode is in a fighting game. And just seeing tweets from people at Arcsys saying they want to add good netcode, but the guys in charge of the money don't see the point. So yeah this sounds like a pretty common thing.

Did it work? Did it not work? In the end it is irrelevant. You did everything you could, so no matter the outcome you could have peace of mind even if it was not the outcome you wanted. That being said, IT WORKED OUT!!! THOUSAND YEAR DOOR REMAKE BABY!!!
