When you pulled him back, instead of getting your hooks in, you could have brought your left leg up and over the top of his head and then pushed while you pulled. you can also do the Ezekiel choke without the figure four. You just hook the fingers of your arm that's closest to the mat around the outside of your other forearm near the elbow. Then you pull up with your shoulder like you did before and with your other arm you try to straighten it, that way you get both carotids. Having a bone on both sides of their neck gets the tap out or choke out really quick. It works pretty well in all the usual places where you would do and regular Ezekiel choke. it works well in the mount and even in the guard, when they try to posture up it just makes it tighter.

I use the counter the same way, but once the space is created, you can also swim your right arm out of the triangle and then you are fighting traditional side control.

That is one of my favourites. I learned it from Ryan Hall Arm Triangles DVD set. The only difference is that Hall drops fully to the the back off the opponent. ie. just lie down to your left shoulder so that your spines are aligned when the no-gi Ezekiel is set. It seem the make it even more tight. Found the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4GrZX58mpiDbpY

Wow great counter Coach Brian! My training partner likes to go knee on belly ( close to the hip with foot on the side hugging the side) and do a pushing triangle arm choke. How do you get out of that? Can I do the same if he does that? Because he pushes into my shoulder driving his knee.
@TeachMeGrappling6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's tough! My best is to use a strong bridge rolling away. Waiting too long is death... early defense is paramount.

Tbh, I think that this only works because the Kata Gatame is not really being applied properly. All of that movement that you're able to achieve with the right arm should not happen if it is being applied correctly.
@Triception6 жыл бұрын
So...what's the counter to this counter? I was brainstorming and thought that since you make space with the defense, maybe some way to get a hand inside the attacker's grip...
@judobreakdowns76162 жыл бұрын
The counter is to apply Kata Gatame correctly. That right arm should not have anywhere near that amount of space.

How come Charles Oliveira didn't get to see this video. If you study Islam you would know this chock was part of the plan. You need to watch the other fights to know that. I guess his team did not so their homework
@rw15576 жыл бұрын
I think you posted a thorough technique video but I'd like to point out a few things. The way that this arm triangle is set in, it's not that effective. We were taught to also drive our shoulder towards the mat, pushing our head into the arm and lowering our head position which ends up almost at the mat. This is to counter your arm going over as it does in the vid. Also, if someone does turn in as you do than we quickly walk on our toes towards their head heading North/South, and they're tapping in milliseconds. Last, the escape is over complicated. First, an arm triangle is a quick kill if done right. You won't have time to shrimp and grab your own leg (which most guys won't be able to do) anyway. Their arm strength also makes a real difference in how fast you have to escape as well. Relying on their head position as part of the escape which I also described is wrong. You need something fast and explosive to beat their power and the fact you have lost an arm and getting choked. You use what you have left, one arm and hips to escape; IN ONE MOTION grab your own wrist, post and hip switch towards them. The hip switch and by grabbing your own wrist gives you the power to drive your arm into them (like your elbowing them in the face) to create space. Since their belly down and your turned into them, the scramble begins or their back's going to get taken. If their head is there to hip switch back and roll them over great but don't rely on it.

With respect, you may not understand this position as much as you think. There are many ways to move. Try to keep an open mind. Good luck to you. 🤙
