This scene is like RIA project's kick-off.
Everything has been studied but you get always the coyote - road runner joke!
People ask the unimaginable to get assured and test the leadership.
Game Over if targets not acquired. Simply put! :p

Billy Bob's face @ 0:52 is like 'please just let me get through the presentation for this admittedly insane plan because it's the only one we've got no matter how many snarky remarks you add in'. . But he manages to smile and remain polite and even give an actual, if brief, answer. Dude's a master-level customer service rep, which is not a quality you'd expect to find in a gov worker on any given day. Let alone one where he's gotta be completely stressed and sleep-deprived.

Should have thrown just one more line in there, the whole point of making a slingshot around the Moon is because that rock is moving so fast. It's to match and even exceed it's speed and then jump on it's back. Had they included that line it would have raised the stakes, it's not like you can just fly to it head on. And it would have better set up the excessive tail debris.

Uh...to get to Earth you need to go past the moon, assuming it takes you 1 day.
@andrewwise4877
@andrewwise4877 2 жыл бұрын
@@Entropy__ In the film the asteroid is seen going right past the moon. They make a point that the moon's gravity should pull in smaller fragments of the tail. The moon doesn't occupy all points around Earth, it has a set orbit. So if the Asteroid hadn't aligned with that orbit and if it hadn't approached at the right time of the month where it could go past the moon, then the astronauts would not have been able to use the moon to speed up and reach matched velocity for landing. Thereby, Earth would have been destroyed.

@StrnFn9099 the first humans to Mars won't return to earth. They will stay there and establish the first colony after it was prebuilt by robots. So it will still be 300 days to mars, with a ship that will have enough commodities to keep the colonist in shape (exercise). Also, they will have a commlink with only 4-24 minutes so it will be like mail. And last of all, don't ignore human ingenuity.

11gs would kill any human in seconds let alone for 10+ mins
@johnnysunday402
@johnnysunday402 9 ай бұрын
If trained & conditioned you would have 2-3 seconds of useful awareness before you passed out under a 'slow' & measured acceleration to 11, or a very short & graduated spike. Most people would pass out around 4-6g, but fighter pilots can potentially pull way up the scale and handle gradual g force spikes in the red (9+) Instant impact force (Instant Accel or Decel) of 11g would MOST likely tear the heart, shatter the bones, bludgeon the organs, and kill. In theory long period exposure to 'upper' G forces would actually restrict blood flow, causing serious damage leading to death due to oxygen deprivation to the brain & organs. There was a race car driver survived an instant decelleration of over 200gs. The greatest vertical g force ever withstood is something like 35 or 36. Stuka pilots in WW2 frequently peaked out well above 9, and the aircraft actually had a 'recovery' system for WHEN the pilot passed out due to the Gs.
