@reivh9099

artiyom It actually means writer. Writer is a reference to Tir, an old Armenian God, that wrote the name of the dead and the living in his books. When a man died he crossed it out of the ‘living’ book and wrote it down in the ‘dead’ book, taking them to the afterlife. So when people say ‘groghy tani’ (let the writer take you), they mean Tir.

So good lol Incidentally, this is one reason the Old Testament is so difficult to understand. To be certain, it is suffused with idiomatic expressions much like these, but the meanings get lost in translation. Americans don’t get it unless they have a background in Ancient Near East writings. Anyway, thanks for sharing! 🙏🏽

Well, it's difficult to find common sense and logic in these phrases because native speakers usually don't even question their meaning. Like, how the hell does saying someone "break your leg" means wishing good luck and nice journey?
@InvincibleNumanist
@InvincibleNumanist 6 жыл бұрын
it's break a leg, not break your leg.
@dr.spectre9697
@dr.spectre9697 6 жыл бұрын
It refers to break a stage leg. The stage legs were responsible for controlling the stage curtains & well as the stage scenery. They were wooden bars & levers. If the curtain moved up & down, it was controlled by a stage leg. Usually the cast of a performance finishes their play/musical & the curtain goes down. Then it comes back up & they do an encore &/or get a standing ovation. If the musical/play was particularly excellent they might come out for two or even 3 encores/ovations Breaking a leg simply meant, I hope your performance is good & you get so many ovations/encores, that the stage leg breaks from making the curtain go up & down so many times.

That’s the meaning, not may I go blind instead of you. That’s why Conan doesn’t get it. He says it makes no sense, because it’s explained wrongly
