It seems like John's getting ready to pull actively again. Zoloev is an absolute beast with his hook. Despite having a smaller hand compared to John he manages to keep his wrist cupped when John was trying to roll him out of the hook. Now that's some serious strength right there.
@backpressure12312 жыл бұрын
I think gripping low when pulling someone with a longer forearm might feel more comfortable in a set up because that's natural for someone with a shorter forearm. Imagine if shorter forearmed guy is trying to grip up high while longer forearmed guy also trying to grip high. Someone is gonna have to give up something or the guy with shorter arm will end up with his elbow up in the air.

and the reason we curl our wrists while armwrestling is same logic. We make our lever (forearm+hand) as short as possible by curling in our wrists as much as possible. So that opponent can't apply much pressure since they can't get out further from our fulcrum (elbow). I know curling wrist has effect of containing their pronation through thumb but the more basic reason is the leverage.

@headcaseman Yeah you're right, I didn't take into account that this was just a practice. Maybe if John tried to toproll him from the start without going to hook first he would have took Zoloev's hand. But he always likes to go into other's strong points to test/feel their strength out so I guess that's why he agreed to go into a hook.
@redhenryrepeater12 жыл бұрын
that was during the competition, which was likely hours before this. john played cadorette and lupkes seconds before he took on zoloev.

They do this stuff after tournaments all the time. They practice little techniques on each other, do endurance and warm up checks, etc.
@backpressure12312 жыл бұрын
that's what John says in his ask John Brzenk page. That to force a hook on a large handed, long forearmed opponent like cleve dean, in order not to get toprolled u gotta grip them low. And many others say that too but Devon disagrees with it. He said he's heard a lot of arguments on gripping low in a hook but he doesn't understand how that works. Devon always goes for higher grip and I personally found that gripping low makes my fingers more vulnerable to their backpressure+pronation.

But of course, the neat thing about armwrestling is that there are always exceptions like kevin bongard who is has really long arm but is strong in a hook and arsen who has short hand and arm but strong in a toproll.
@leo28059711 жыл бұрын
Actually Brzenk was not pulling Zoloev like he would pull in a real match. He was just holding Zoloev. If it was a real match, John would hook him up and beat him. But Zoloev is a really strong kid, and I think he will be the best pound 4 pound in the world 5 years from now.

either the taller forearmed guy would have to grip low to match the shorter guy's height, or the shorter guy would have to grip low if the taller guy insists on high grip like in John vs Devon match. or the taller forearmed guy will have to slide his elbow to the back of the pad or the shorter guy's elbow to the front of the pad to equalize the height
@backpressure12312 жыл бұрын
Likewise, if a guy has a weak hand but a stocky strong arm, then it's best to avoid a hook with him and instead try to grip him high and beat his hand. But it would be more rewarding if you can beat him in a hook where he is the strongest. John said the best build for armwrestling is short arm and big hand and most disadvantageous build is long arm and small hand. big hand+long arm is suited for toproll while small hand+ short arm is suited for hook.
@luzerino11244 жыл бұрын

when I grip low I usually do that to a weaker guy in practice (I sometimes grab their wrsits) to get a better resistance. Think of ur opponent's arm as a lever. His elbow is fulcurm. U know that the further u grip from the fulcrum the more force u can exert right? so basically by getting out on his hand you are getting farther away from the fulcrum (his elbow) and thus, applying more pressure on his arm.

wow really? for me it was the opposite. Remember John said in ask Brzenk page that one of the best ways to counter low grip rolling toproll (one that attacks ur opponents pinky) is high grip posting toproll (one that attacks opponents index finger) cuz when u grip up high u give ur opponent no fingers to roll into so he's either forced to hook u or post toproll with u. were ur opponents more of a low hand toprollers or high hand toprollers?

If you double cap your thumb, you're going for post toprolling or high hook, while single cap is adaptable for both hook and toproll, no cap is for either a low hook or a low hand toproll that targets the guy's pinky. If u cap your thumb you can use your finger strength in assisting your thumb to rotate into the guy's fingers.

There are two ways u can armwrestle someone, you can go right into the guy's strength or you can attack his weak spots. If the guy has strong hand but a long, relatively weak arm (cleve dean type), then you can either try to beat him by grip him low and force a hook on his arm or grip high and beat his fingers with your backpressure. Or you can try to grip hand to hand and overcome his hand with full-hand toproll.
