Wow--another year of practice. Wouldn't you know it, i picked up a bad habit (probably in pursuit of a heavier draw wt bow) of jerking sideways and down at release. I could still hit the target, but i lost control of the bow arm over reaction...Armin to the rescue! The rubber band trick/technique/drill worked perfect for me. Since i already use the bands to stretch and warm up my shooting muscles, it was a no brainer. Using a training hall mirror, hold the bow arm in position as you draw the bands, hold...focuss...fire! The bow arm didn't move! Now the wrist action. Then out to the close target bale. Thanks Armin! I could do it! Now to keep going until the new action settles in. Randy c

Thank you good Sir ❤ I'm completely obsessed with this martial and spiritual archery.🙏...With this flow and combined with tai chi, my khatra now seems to come so naturally and intuitively aligned with body, bow and arrow and target.

Second day of practice and at 10 meters, i had some beginners luck...now comes the continued work of consistent execution. Thank you, randyc

Hi Armin, thanks for your kind words. I'm glad that you obviously got my point. Some data that might be interesting for you, who teaches lots of people and meets only a minor percentage of them in person. Maybe for others too, who think about starting asian archery, thumb release, however you want to call it. Besides, it's sunday and I'm kind of chatty. :o) I started archery in june, I built myself a small shooting range in the backyard and and got myself a cheap bow. I have no background in archery, but I do have a background in chinese martial arts working with the same concepts that are used here. It took me about 2 weeks to stop shooting pure crap, slamming the downward flething into my thumb joint and so on. Fun started with practising khatra. The arrows started to fly straighter and faster and once in a while they hit the the target right where I wanted exactly the way that I wanted. I usually shoot groups of 5. At the moment, maybe in 1 of 20 sets, all arrows hit a cup-sized spot, sticking all parallel and completely straight. But I can shoot repeatedly 2 to 3 or reverse. Meaning 2 arrows perfect, 3 crappy, sometimes the other way round. To my surprise, there is is a narrow time frame in which I constantly shoot quite good. That is when I just watch my posture a little, don't take any time for aiming but avoid to get hectic. No question, I'm not a good archer at all. But I am quite impressed by the speed of progress I could achieve by using your videos. At the moment I'm working on expanding the arm spiral. I hurt my thumb a little and tried slavic release for a while. That, for some reason, helped a lot to eliminate some uncontrolled stiffness in my release elbow. I practise daily, but never more than an hour throughout the day. Basically I do 2 things: I deconstruct my movement following Armin's method. Second is, watchting Armin and the impressive Murat Özveri shooting. I'm a visual type of learner and repeadedly watching this kind of precision forms a kind of image in my mind, that I can use in practice. I don't practise Mihai Cozmei's way of archery (at least for now) but his 'shot from heart' video is the best manual I could find about using the chest. Or upper dantian if you want. And I should mention Justin Ma, especially his video about the draw. That helped a lot at a certain point.

That's really an eye opener for me! incredible video Armin, congrats, I am a Tennis player since 50 years now, I learned it the classic way,, tight wrist, right angel of the racket to the forearm. And of course standing lateral to the ball before contacting the ball. All the power came just from the shoulder and the arm. Now look the modern forehand! Open stand, using the hip movement, loose wrist to create "Momentum" and "effortless" speed (incl. Top Spin) using your whole body. So much analogy here which tells me that this is the only way how it really should work.. I am already on the way on changing my style in tennis, thx too archery and specially your video here which really build confidence in what I am doing in Tennis and Archery and more important "why"!!! it makes so much sense...

Hi Armin, One thing Iv'e noticed that people do not say enough of Is in my opinion one of the most important points. RELAX. A soft muscle works more fluidly than a tense one and expierenced archers are relaxed imagine sliding into your comfy armchair just in front of the TV, youv'e done it a thousand times and you can flop, fall, slide, jump in fact any move you like and the outcome will always be the same youll be sitting comfortably in your chair you dont miss it you dont fall off. The same goes with anything we do, skills are not something we are born with they are something we accomplish and in all ways of life be it sport games politics religion the more relaxed a person is the better they are at the task at hand. Think of the first time that person kicked a ball, presented a speach or threw a punch all without exception nervously approached the task hoping it will be over before they started. The art in whatever you wish to learn is to first stop the tension in your body The pull back and pushing through that you demonstrated in your video showed fully how you engage every muscle not just the arms as you prepare your bow, Its the same when I throw a punch in Karate or Kung-Fu same in Iaido the more I practice the more I relax the more I relax the better I am. For that reason the person who has done it a 1000 times will be a 1000 times better than the one who does it for the first time. Thank you Armin for yet another brilliant Video.

I was engaging for years only the Dantien, until I discovered the INCREDIBLE force of the Earth: try using the Dantien as you do but before engaging it “push” slightly towards the Earth and let its energy push back up into you, channel it upwards slightly spiraling the feet, calves, hips and pelvis. Passing through the Dantien now this last feels FULL of energy and stabilizes and amplifies this force. Without the earth it just floats…

Armin, I always learn so much from your videos. I have been shooting traditional bows since I was 8 years old and almost 50 years later I still learn something new all the time. As you say, archery is a discipline we can enjoy throughout our lives. I have only just started shooting a Korean style bow with a thumbing and have a few other asiatic bows on order....as we get older we often have the financial resources we lacked when we were young and passionate about our new hobbies! The majority of my shooting has been with Hill type longbows in emulation of the great Howard Hill. I can't pull 100lbs anymore and sold those bows and even 70 lbs feels like a bear - my new asiatic bows are 35-45 lbs at 28" proving we can sometimes get wiser as we get older! In the Hill style of shooting the bow starts low and comes up into the archer's line of sight much like bringing up a shotgun to shoot birds on the wing. Yet, with heavy longbows the draw often starts at eye level or even a little higher and the upper back and lats are used to draw shoulder blades down and together and the hands apart to achieve a full draw to the ear or a bit beyond. I've also seen similar technique used in Kyudo and among Mongolian archers shooting heavy bows. I've also seen this among mounted archers as well. Certainly, the start is in the shitahara as we breath in but as we breath out we contract our backs and tighten our core which leads to the natural flow you achieve and I aspire to where the back tension makes the khatra and the twisting release seem the inevitable outcome of our intent as our arrows seek the target. Stay healthy.

Very, very good instruction. Although I can no longer shoot due to shoulder damage and arthritis, it looked like you were practising tai chi which I still do. Which is not surprising at all, all the martial arts are related because they do the same thing with the body. Regarding the sword, when you transferred it to your left hand and punched, that is how the tip is accelerated for the cut. not the wrist which is not strong enough but controls where it is going. Try the sword in the one inch punch.

Great breakdown Armin and Happy Birthday! I've learned tons from your videos. Lately I've been thinking of Khatra as somewhat of a flicking motion. As mischievous kids in the lunch room cafeteria we would use plastic spoons to flick spitballs, food, or whatever. In my mind the concept is very similar. When you reach full draw, you sort of gently "flick" the arrow off the string. By "flicking" your bow hand forward, you "snap" the string out of your release hand. Add in micro extensions, string twist, etc... to clean up the form.
@LOFIGSD4 жыл бұрын
Happy Birthday, agree, I also look at Archery as a Martial Art, as such ,should be trained in the same progression, analogy, a beginner hits a bag (static target), then someone holding pads( distance changes), then an opponent (moving target).
