Interesting. According to my sources, the only 2 contenders that I can see would be the Fin and Sperm whales. However, Chris is correct when he says that Fin whales are filter feeders and their esophagus is too small to accommodate an adult human. Leaving only the Sperm whale as the logical candidate. Blue whales are not found in the Mediterranean Sea, and they're filter feeders as well.

On the Fish topic , imagine how much longer lived sea creatures were in the water and how much bigger they could’ve been back then not being as heavily hunted by man. The largest whale shark modern times have on record according to ZSL was 66ft/20m 😱

The stories told by seamen of old are NOT far fetched. With a few years of fishing in some of the most remote places on the Bearing Sea, I’ve seen some of God’s creation up close and personal. Pretty impressive and thats on the tail end of man’s destruction of our Oceans. Can only imagine what our oceans were like back then.

@JMill-bj4lz The gospels are not biographies of Jesus. They are not interested in telling a factual account of Jesus life . They are documents of Faith. Anyone with a year or 2 of theology under their belt know that to be the case. My grade ten students understand this. Let me ask you this question. Did Jesus climb a mountain to proclaim the beatitudes? If you answer yes, I would say that according to Luke, he comes down from a place to a level plain and gives the beatitudes. You are thinking of Matthew's account. Well, it can't be both one of them has to be true, and one of them has to be false. How can they both be true? Because when I say they're both true I'm not talking about factual historical truth. Matthew of course. Has Jesus climb a mountain? Because he's writing to a Jewish audience, and he wants to make a connection between Moses and Jesus. On the other hand luke is writing to a Greek non-jewish Gentile audience. So he has Jesus come down from the mountain onto a plain and gives the beatitudes to a large crowd of people. So they are truthful, but they're not factual.

The Ricinus plant has been linked as being the interpretation of the Gourd written of in the final act of the scriptures, and I’ve always been fascinated by the connection to castor oil and the medicinal qualities that ointment has could easily be linked to Jonah’s ailments and discomfort that could be related to the post traumatic experience of being hypodermically damaged from his unconventional nautical expedition. 🤔

Because if, as you say, this book is parody, then why wouldn't it exaggerate the size of Ninevrh to comic proportions? If nothing else, it's one of the tip-offs that it's parody in the first place.

Let us say living dead. Nearly dead. He was very sic because the lack of air and the dtomachacids and so on. If we compare this to a man, who had a similar experience, then we can understand this. The dead do not need to pray. Of cause Sheʾōl means the realm of the dead. The Hadēs. It is divided in the Paradise/with Chrístos/the bosom of ʾAbrāhām and the Abyssos/ʾAbaddōn (for Deamons called the Prison or Tataros). But very often it means the Grave: Yaʿaqōb thought his Sons would bring his grey hair there, every time in ʿIyyōb with perhaps 1 exception, all times when it is said, that there is no thinking or doing and so on ...

Other possibilities on the big fish: Jonah had an intense dream of it, Jonah had an intense vision, or Jonah had an intense spiritual experience that he expressed to other people in poetic terms. Prophets are especially known for being poetic, of course. And he could have said all this with the expectation that the people he told it to understood that, because that was expected at the time. And any of those options would have been divinely guided and meant the same thing as an actual physical event. The same applies to the plant growing over the shelter at the end. As for dating the writing, another point is that it refers to Nineveh in the past tense, which would put the writing after 612 B.C. when the Babylonians destroyed it. And it refers to the king of Nineveh (which would be like referring to Charles II as the king of London) which also bespeaks being later after the place was gone. Of course, you could also have earlier writing incorporated into later writing for the final product before it's set and un-revisable as scripture.

Great conversation, but a critique: does God know the difference between fish & whales? Do seagoing mariners? If Holy Scripture states FISH, why look at whales? The Mediterranean Sea is known to hold great white sharks. They have found incredibly LARGE animals, unchewed, in their bellies. Further, it has been fairly recently discovered (less than 100 years) that this species of shark can withhold food swallowed for digestion at a later time, even days later. If we casually add critical features to the Word of God, can we blame heathens for doing the same with homosexuality, the Commandments, or any other verse they happen to dislike or find inconvenient? How about WE believe God?

Bill Cooper's 'The authenticity of the book of Jonah' identifies the animal as a 'horse-headed' or 'dog-headed' sea monster, later described in Roman accounts and elsewhere. Worth a read.

Since God made the fishes and the marine mammals (i.e. whales) He does know the difference. And since Since God is outside of time, he also knew that Jonah would be in the fish three days before being thrown up on the shore.

@Shevawn Basye Thanks for the response, sir. Jesus used the incident of Jonah to describe what HE would accomplish for the whole world. He didn't survive the belly of the fish. God rose him from the dead in front of 250,000 witnesses. Ash & sacloth for the King, the people & their animals as evidence of true repentance. More than skin like a prune was demonstrated that day & the people took note. Jesus was the fulfillment of Jonah, because He raised Himself.

Yes, I was going to highlight that same fact. Apparently whales do not have big enough passageways from their mouths to stomachs to accommodate a grown man. But we know that hundreds or thousands of creatures have gone extinct over the millenia, including huge fish. And of course, since God created a super-long day for Joshua's Israelites to fight, caused a donkey to speak with human sound, etc., it's possible that he made a fish specifically to handle this Jonah-swallowing task (whether a whole type [which would be my guess] or just one specific fish)!

Clearly we listened to different talks. I found it very interesting especially the hiatus of Assyrians going to war. Nineveh has literally been thoroughly explored by the Archeologists. I've just watched a fascinating podcast where on the walls in the great hall of the king of Assyria (in the capital, Nineveh), in relief shows the defeat of Lachish and 3 leaders of Lachish who had been impaled alive (as the inscription on the walls details). The account is given in 2 Kings 18: 13-17
