Basic pay doesn't seem like a lot but when you account for all the other benefits that the Army offers, you can do a lot with that money

DJ, I not only totally agree but I'd like to add this to it. I came from the hood. The military gave me opportunities to meet and learn from others who lived so much better than me. They changed my life DJ.

I joined the Army as an E-1 in 1999, and I made $852 per month while I was at BCT. I got promoted to E-2 the day we graduated from BCT and my pay went up. I had been making $2,000 per month as a civilian before joining, and I took a big pay cut to go in the Army, but I did not do it for the money.

I joined for money and to get out of the hood in South Central Los Angeles.

I joined in 1994 and got 770 a month before taxes.. there was a 23% gap at that time between military and civilian pay..

Never had that much..joined in 1977..basic training..took out for laundry..i was lucky to make $250 a pay period after taxes..then you take a pay advance after basic training..had to play that back..brought home $75 maybe less..times have changed

Chrissy, you're correct about the salary alone. There's so much more involved though. The average 18 year old from the hood like I was, won't get many career opportunities. A financially rewarding future from that (good job) doesn't happen for most. Next step is usually drugs, crime & prison. Military gives 18 year olds a place to live & eat along with training in 100's of career fields. I made it out of the hood.

@77Vetsorg Ha Ha Ha Ha yeah sounds like me. After boot camp I went to Chanute Air Force Base Rantual Illinois for my AFSC and because I was going to school for Aircraft Maintenance on B 52'S I got off to a slow start partying but once I got to my permanent duty station it really kicked off. I couldn't help but find the parties and the girls. Because of that I ate mostly at the chow hall. Ha Ha Ha. Thank you for your service.

When talking about compensation, you have to disclose that 1) Your housing will be FREE... you might have 1 or 2 roommates, and 2) your 3 delicious buffet meals a day will also be FREE... That generally means that your paychecks will be ALL FOR BEER AND WOMEN...

Set an allotment of 3/4 of your pay to someone you trust in their name Have them put it in a bank for you. That way if you get busted (article 15) Uncle Sam can't touch your allotment.

Embrace the suck it’s a mind game mind over matter and push your self….Lead the pack don’t follow and remember your WHY…why you’re there and have more than one why because after a while you’ll need more than one reason to motivate you. It’s really a short time in basic training but it will seem like it’s forever.

If you do the future soldier program do you immediately start as an E3 or is that after basic

Levi, I was in the Army decades ago. I don't know anything about a future soldier program. However, I recommend this. Ask your Recruiter. Most importantly, get any promises made by your recruiter specifically spelled out on your contract. It's just good business. If it's not in your contract, you might not get it. Keep in touch Levi.

Pay is low, yes. But you don't have to pay for housing, food, or any utilities. Not to mention, during this time, you don't need any clothes either. So if you look at it this way, really ain't bad.
