Originally this was a pilot episode for a whole series base of Team Fortress 2 for Adult Swim. In classic Valve move (the devs) they took forever and they launched the video for the players as an update after the deal fizzle out. Team Fortress 2 at the star didnt have a plot but slowly gain one with the comics and annual updates (the game is from 2007 and STILL going strong). If you can watch the comic dubs here in youtube, the comics are a blast fill with very good humor.

No a lot of this doesn’t have much to do with the game. The teleporter is a real thing in the game though that players can build and use, but I think this is mostly for building the personalities of the playable characters. There’s even a comic series that about the TF2 world that’s also pretty funny. It’s also about 5 times more unhinged than “Expiration Date.”

@@MilitaryHistoryGearReview Yeah, the comics establish that the two teams are each owned by a person (REDmond and BLUtarch Mann) who believe that the gravel byproduct of mining is somehow the power supply for all of mankind. They fight endlessly over gravel pits, which would be harmless and stupid if each of them wasn't in control of half of the planet's infrastructure. Australia is also basically a futuristic utopia because the country is on top of the largest deposit of a special gold isotope called Australium. This stuff basically makes humans better in every way just by being nearby. As a result, everyone in Australia is built like a linebacker, has a moustache, drinks constantly but never gets worse than "happy drunk", and can shrug off small arms fire. Including the ladies.

they also released DLC for source filmmaker containing every asset for nearly all of their other games (half life 2, left 4 dead, left 4 dead 2, portal, etc), and a third party game that allowed them to add their assets to help market their game. Tho, that pales in comparison to the amount of fanmade content on the workshop and various other sites (deviant art, sfmlabs, etc) made for SFM. they even stated that you could monetize animations made using their assets on youtube, you just couldn't use them for commercial purposes.

Most of the characters are mentally incompetent in one form or another. Lead poisoned water, general insanity, drunkenness, or incomprehensible knowledge of secrets. Engineer has multiple PHD’s and he’s probably the most intelligent person, next to medic. However the Engineer is a silently unmerciful maniac, due to his connections within the main lore. Not much is known about medic, he’s German and he doesn’t care who he has to kill or wound just to experiment, even if it’s his own team. Scout is just….. not generally educated, he can’t even read. He’s fast because he had to outrun his many brothers as a child. Spy is probably the most mentally stable, next to heavy, he shows strong common sense and isn’t much of a people person. Demoman had his eye turned into a giant floating monster by a book while he was cleaning a wizards library. He’s an alcoholic, so much so that in the comics, he almost died after he sobers up. Soldier is just batshit crazy in every sense. He fought in Germany AFTER WW2 and gave himself his own medals. He continues to drink lead filled water. He lived with the same wizard who’s library was being cleaned by Demoman. Soldier filled the Wizards refrigerator with sour cream, attracting thousands of raccoons. As the park ranger, Soldier evicted the Wizard from his own castle after turning it into a raccoon sanctuary. (Not a single line of that was made up, I shit you not) Heavy’s father was a political prisoner in the Soviet Union. One day, presumably after his fathers death, Heavy and his family broke free from the gulag and hid in the Siberian mountains. He may sound like a big dumb brute, but he has a PHD in Russian literature. Nobody knows anything about pyro, just that whatever it is, it has a childlike mind and the team will often talk to pyro like it’s a child. Ms. Pauling is an assistant to the administrator. The administrator runs TF industries, secretary playing two brothers “Redmond” and “Blutarch” against eachother. There’s so much more wacky life behind this series. I recommend reading the comics if you want to know more. The main series of comics is called “Mann Co. no More” And if you do read this, I recommend reading the prequel comics “Blood Brothers” and then the “Catch Up Comic”. All the comics can be found free of charge in the TF2 website. There are voicedubs on KZbin though, good ones. I recommend the dubs by a channel called “The Beard”

Alcohol withdrawal is actually incredibly deadly, and the most likely to kill you withdrawal out of all commonly used drugs, so Demoman potentially dying from lack of alcohol is probably the most realistic part of TF2’s lore (as if there was any competition for realism).

I loved the video! Expiration date was an update trailer, it was originally going to be an episode for an upcoming tf2 series, but that got cancelled. 2:26 What he just used was a teleporter made by engineer that can be used in game. Funnily enough, theres a chance that you may spawn a random piece of bread when you use a teleporter, and soldier has a higher percentage when doing it. For some reason teleporters (and dispensers, a tool used for healing and getting ammo) weren't showcased in meet the engineer. However, there's still some magic in the game. Soldiers roommate is a wizard who also happens to be partially the cause of demo losing his eye. You can fight this wizard in-game, but only when it's october 9:21 funny you should mention that, in-game, if you kill a person more than 4 times, the character you're playing will insult the character they're playing. The insults are very hilarious and savage. The only two people who don't do that are medic and heavy because medic is, well, a medic and heavy(surprisingly) is the nicest class in the game 9:52 the fried chicken is in fact in the game, it doesn't do anything important, but it's a taunt for Scout.

2:21 that was actually demoman, not pyro. And he didnt disappear, he just went to a teleporter that takes you to whatever places u wanna go. For example you place an entrance teleporter near your base, then put your exit teleporter to everywhere you want, cos building teleporters can help your team reach the frontline faster and easier but watch out for spies tho. They can disguise as your teammates and kill you when its time. Always watch your back and teleporter to make sure you wont die and get your buildings sapped and destroyed.

There are a bunch of little details and inside jokes scattered around but the expertly animated video and great music and voice acting is very nice too like making millions of stuff accelerate and decelerate smoothly, things move around as if there's weight to it, facial expressions all require a ton of attention and artist's touch to it You can check out some other sfm films done by fans and the difference is very obvious I recommend "heavy is dead" it's a good one

HeadCanon: Medic DID heal Demoman's left eye, he just hasnt realized yet.

According to the comics, he did heal it many times. But as it turns out the eye socket itself is cursed. So, every Halloween the new eye turns into a giant monster and tries to kill them. Medic got just so annoyed by the whole ordeal, that he scooped out the part of Demo’s brain that would think about that. Sadly that isn’t an exact science, so he advises the Demo to not think in general.

unfunny fact: medic's medi-gun's design was changed from the one seen in the meet the medic to the one seen in this video, and that old model was changed to another medi-gun called the quick fix, that heals 40% faster, uber buildup increased by 10%, overheal is +25% more hp than max instead of +50%, and the uber makes it so that you heal teammates and yourself at 300% the quick fix's regular speed Also, there's a hidden stat that then the player is overhealed by past a certain %, uber buildup is slower, but the quick fix's overheal is too tiny to be affected by it so its a plus

For more tf2 content, i recommend you to check out “end of the line” and bolted bohemoth. Bolted bohemoth has 5 episodes of continuation, while being separated in two groups. “Live and let spy” is the direct continuation followed up by “The red, the blue and the ugly”. And it has another continuation from the “bolted bohemoth” which is the “burning through space(or similar)” followed up by another one with the name space which I forgot, and ends up in “The red, the blue and the ugly” aswell.

Pyro didn’t disappear into flames, that was demoman taking the teleporter. The teleporter makes these slight flame particles when someone enters it both in the short and in game.

Not sure if you're still checking out comments, but to answer your question of this having to do with the game: This whole thing was supposed to be a pilot for a TF2 adult swim show, but Valve is dumb and pulled the plug from it. So instead, it served as a cinematic trailer of sorts for the Love and War update, which had several bread related weapons and cosmetics.
