Great chat! I'm also at the point where I need to cull less-used paints to keep the really useful ones within an arm's reach of my painting desk. Your logic was solid throughout! Agreed that the largest holes in the fanatic line are darker colors- most of the "triads" seem to be missing 1-2 colors closer to black.
@thestateofplay20238 ай бұрын
Brent!! Hey! Yeah, I think we all collect far too much paint and vast chunks of them never get used. Sometime I think I’m more addicted to collecting pint, than models and games! And we all have favourites that keep coming out time and again. Even when we want to try something else. It’s a shame about the darker colours as calling it “the complete set” kind of paints them into a corner. You can hardly create additional darker paints AFTER making a ‘complete’ set. 🤣
@Weaver_Games8 ай бұрын
Totally agree the fanatic range is really missing dark colours. I'm looking for holes to fill them. Pro acryl has some great dark red browns that fit my needs which is my personal biggest gap. I think AK 3rd gen is a great option but I just have no local store that sells it unfortunately - and shipping in Canada is extremely expensive. 15 bucks minimum, so it makes like no financial sense to buy one bottle online and ship it.

Glad there's people like us! I paint a variety of stuff from board game minis, 40k, terrain, and random 3D prints I think are cool so I found I was just always going to the damn store to buy a few random colours of stuff. Especially for this 100+ mini board game I was trying to slap chop through. Would have been way more economical to just buy the whole speed paint 2.0 set than run to the store twice a week buying a few pots here and there. I learned my lessons with the Fanatic line and just bought the complete. Having a good time so far. I get like if all you wanted to do was paint a blood angel army you're just going to need just a large amount of a few specific colours but that ain't how I roll. I love having tons of options just ready at hand. And I if I'm army painting I want my notes to say "Highlight with imp yellow" not "for highlights I mixed 1 drop of pro acryl yellow, 1 drop of AK 3rd gen ivory, and thin with some Lahmian Medium". Screw that. Painting one off models, sure i'll mix away since nothing needs to be repeated uniformly after its done.

You hit the nail on the head with GW paints. I had Citadel paints back in the 90's and then jumped back into the hobby in about 2015. I'v almost exclusively used GW paints since then with an occasional Vallejo or Pro Acryl paint thrown in. I've never liked the pots and have had a ton of paints dry out and have spilled a bunch of washes and contrast paints over the years and this has been highlighted ad nauseum on by hobbyists. I'm dumfounded why GW has never simply gone to dropper bottles. What I've never heard any content creators bring up is the way they pigeon hole painters into using their paints how THEY think WE should use them. Intentionally making certain paints thicker and other paints thinner for base painting just sucks, and then they create their own Dry paint line with paints that are so dry that they are guaranteed a short shelf life in their terrible pots. All acrylic paints can obviously be used for dry brushing or layering or base coating or highlights. It's all about the technique you employee. For some of the reasons you mentioned, but mostly because of the pots I've made the switch to Army Painter Fanatic paints as well. The Complete Set arrived at my house today and I'm excited to get started with them. Great content. Liked and subscribed btw.
@thestateofplay20238 ай бұрын
Thank you! You know I think GW got stuck. I’m sure they had conversations about dropper bottles but with so many pots still out in the world on shelves in hobby stores they’d lose millions if they switched to droppers now. Simply because no one would buy a pot as soon as they announced it. They’d be left recalling trillions of unsold pots. 🤣

@@thestateofplay2023 When they made Primaris marines they knew they were going to slowly phase out mini marines as their sales were certainly going to wane. There are 3 key reasons they keep the pots. They look iconic and stand apart from the competition, they waste paint so you have to buy more paint, they are of middling quality but newbies will buy anyway. Apart from the contrast range I think they are terrible. I use AK and they are fantastic, but Vellejo is pretty good and I hear many good things about Pro Acryl. I hear Vellejo model color is getting a refresh very soon.

It would be nice to see more companies follow suit with full or at least partial or specifically aimed sets. But for now, Army Painter is doing it well and doing it affordably as well. Yet ultimately they end up in a box, bag, or their own pile subjected to brownian motion.

Hey. Yeah I’m not sure why a paint being Matt or liquidy would have any bearing on drybrushing. As you literally wipe most paint off a brush leaving only damp pigments (essentially) then the more pigment a paint has, the better for drybrushing. It lasts longer on a brush. It’s hard to drop 700 euro on a hobby as a starter for beginner, and judging by the price per bottle even if they start selling only 100 paints tones in a separate box that still would be 450+ euros = Tough to swallow. P.s. forgot to mention that I got armypainter speed paint 1.0 and could use it as washes. While it was good to start its issues were too rough for beginner in the hobby.

Oh man, that’s a minefield of a question. To be totally honest if you’re just starting I’d say buy only the paints you need for the models you’re painting. And spend time learning to thin, layer, glaze, wash and mix. Those skill are much more useful than 100 paints.

I had been sticking with Reaper for a while but tended to overwork the paint due to impatience. So I jumped on the full Fanatic set based on the coverage claims and I think they're absolutely stellar paints, I definitely fuss with it less because it just covers great. I also grabbed some of the really dark colors from the Pro Acryl line since Fanatic leans bright. But I will say Reaper is still really good for layering, sometimes the coverage of Fanatic and Pro Acryl is actually too good, or I'm still sub-par at thinning paints, I'll have to try some mediums other than water.

Curious on your thoughts on Kimera Kolors since those are made for mixing
@thestateofplay20238 ай бұрын
Let’s see. I thought they were a great idea but single pigment colours can be terrible for coverage. Some pigments are naturally transparent so will never get full coverage no matter how many layers. Red and white. Great! Pthalo or yellows, not so much. As incredibly thick paints they need thinned almost perfectly. They need to be mixed for coverage and mix very very well. But… they keep coming out in phases. Are quite expensive and are no better than artist grade acrylics. Honestly I personally think people would be better off with liquitex, daler-rowney, or winsor & newton as they’re easier to get your hands on in any art store. 👍🏼

Hi, I'm also in the AP camp with Fanatic+Speedpaints combo. What I've noticed: 1. Fanatics have great coverage. I mean, really great. But it came with a price. They are even so slightly desaturated and what I think is there is a bit of white/black pigment in every colour to increase opacity. 90% of the time it's still ok, the other 10% is when I have to glaze with speedpaints to increase saturation (Speedpaints are very vivid paints). 2. Some colour hexades seem too narrow, like not going dark enough, and at the same time the difference between - for example - two grayish whites is to small to justify two separate bottles. 3. Yeah, the lack of off-black - it is surprising though, because there were two nice offblack colours in original Warpaints range (Necromancer's cloak and Hardened Carapace). 4. Why AP included only red and green in metallic colours and got rid of other colours (with my beloved Night Scales)? I'm baffled. Either keep the full OG range or get rid of that entirely (and release as expansion). Metallics also lack dark steely paint. And still I think the speedpaint metallics are superior. Somehow even zenithal priming comes through metallic speedpaints (some foul magic, I guess).

Yeah I was curious what you'd think about the white. I've been having a lot of fun with the full Fanatic set. But I haven't even thought to try the black and white lol. I'm not sure what I ever use them for. If you need true white then you aren't using any miniature hobby paints. I dont' know what it is. But I'm happy with Fanatic! Really very happy. I think it's the labels and range. My paints fill a 10ftx20ft wall and I just redesigned it to have AP Fanatic as the center. It's not because they are the best. They are simple the new baseline for me. Maybe I'll end up using them all as just primer basically, idk. But I'm fully in support of this name and color system! All my better paints fall in line where I need them. Unlike GooberTown and many others I don't want my paint in front of me. I don't want to look up and be able to grab something. I literally have a wall of paints. thousands of paints really. AP's current full sets are what 600 bottles? so yeah I have many more than that. So my process is to stand and think about my project. Pull some paints and do some tests put them back and pull more. Once I'm done I have a plan. that plan can evolve easily with my setup which AP has only made so much easier now. Yes AP have huge gaps and it sucks. But the gaps in my system are a lot less now. For anyone looking to get hobby paint for the first time you can't really go wrong with AP these days. Sure you can find better but I simply can't point you in the right directions. This video highlights that problem so very well.

I agree they’re good paints. They have their flaws but so do all ranges as I pointed out in the video. I don’t have my paint in front of me either. I paint at the other side of the room. As you say I think having it in front of you stops you from planning properly as you just grab instead of think. I think my future plan is to figure out alternative flexible triads. I’m curious what combos will work even if I have to mix a drop with a drop for in between colours. Like a blue shadow to a red highlight in scale would be cool.

IMO they really just need to bring it back to effectively a "normal" acrylic paint, washes, and contrast paints, and effects are fine too I guess. As an aside the price of those "paints" made for basing is absolutely insane. In Canada the normal price for a pot of say Astrogranite is $9.40 and is 24mls. But you can just get some Vallejo ground texture, which is 200ml for $16 CAD. I could probably base like a thousand 28mm bases with that stuff. GW was always expensive but it's at the point here where the competition is almost half the price per ml and is even better quality for the most part.

Yes, GW are pricing themselves out of the market on multiple fronts. And their refusal to “get with program” doesn’t help. They don’t even make a wet palette. I mean why on earth not. Well probably because it would cost $100. 🤣

@@thestateofplay2023 lol very true. Citadel sells their hobby drill for $40 bucks here. I can get an entry level Dremel for $50 bucks. Army Painter's drill is like $10 - $12.

@@thestateofplay2023- Why would anyone actually want to buy a wet palette? You can make one for next to nothing with a cheap Tupperware box (mine cost 50p), a sheet of baking parchment and a sheet of kitchen roll.

@@sirrathersplendid4825 I think you underestimate the power of laziness. Why buy cakes when you can bake one at home. Why have a car when you can walk. Why have sex when you have two hands. 🤣

I love that I can buy all paints with one go from Army Painter, but I really can't, because they are so expensive. I think Pro Acryl is better in that case, because I can buy box after box and finally get all of them. With Army painter all bigger boxes contains paints from smaller ones. The same problem with Vallejo.

Yeah you’re right. But I can get AP locally, making it cheaper than having others delivered.

@@thestateofplay2023if I can justify buying such a big box, then I wouldn't complain. But I'm at the begining of the hobby and my wife would kill me.

Ah, the wife. Yes, now that I understand. Quick tip. Whenever you buy hobby products add extra budget for flowers. It buys a lot of “freedom”. 🤣

Great video! For some reason, the 2.0 speed paint metallics (I have the full set) are better than their Fanatic metallics somehow!
@thestateofplay20238 ай бұрын
Omg they are, aren’t they. Seems weird they made fanatic metallics when the speedpaints are better.

If i wanted to mimic the fanatic "triad" ranges with your cmykixong method, would I want to play with tone or value?
@thestateofplay20236 ай бұрын
Interesting question. I’d probably do it by starting with the mid colour and adding the complimentary to darken it then adding white to lighten it. Which judging by the amount of white pigment in fanatic paints seems to be how they’ve done it. Having said this you could also do it by taking the colour you want on the chart and adding more or less drops of the mix to each side.

I think Midwinter Minis once did gold by mixing silver and yellow ink. Always wanted to try that.
@thestateofplay20238 ай бұрын
Yes, that works. And it works with mixing the in contrast and speedpaints too.

I would like to invite you to give HUGE Miniatures paints a try. I am really liking the range and coverage. Also Give TURBO DORK a go.. kinda novelty paint, but good and useful for various reasons, like painting moltagun barrels as an example. Or Tyranid scales in a bug like sheen. Anyways great video, I was thinking I was clever for using more traditional paints for miniature paints over many of the model hobby brands... so it was refeshing to see another artist using Liquitex and Golden. I have been eyeing the Army painter Speed and fanatic ranges and I may now pull the plug thanks to your video.

Hey! Sadly you can’t really get HUGE paints in the U.K. EBay and Etsy have some but the price is massively inflated due to import. And the range isn’t large on either of these sites. Turbo dork I like but rarely paint shifting colours. The other range I fancied trying was Cuttlefish colors but again, really hard to get in the U.K. Oh I love my art paints. I came from an art background so I stuck with a lot of stuff. Why break the habit of a lifetime especially when art stuff is more expensive. 😂👍🏼
