Glad to see you gave MTG Bella a set, I think her using a hair dryer is great to have a another option to prevent reactivation. And also because of her review, I now have another Painter to follow :D

@@LegionaireSiggi I’m honestly surprised more painters don’t just have a hair dryer at the readyz it’s so useful and inexpensive. Must be a holdover from army painting and commission painting for us.

@@TheArmyPainter Its only been the last 5 years that I saw people talking about them. I still paint fairly slowly and in batches so I hadn't considered one for myself.

I saw a few videos on this product and I ordered the mega set. I have been painting with craft acrylic paints. This will speed up my board game painting.

Thanks so much for the comprehensive review! I held off on GW’s contrast paints for a long time in hopes that AP would bring out something better. I have SO MANY models in the backlog that it’s just not feasible to do them all my standard way anymore, so your review has finally convinced me to take the plunge and get these. Thanks!

Picked up the starter set this week for a project I'm doing to paint all the figures from the D&D "Wrath of Asharladon" boardgame. Thus far I have used speedpaints on an orc, three demons, and three dwarves. Pleased with them so far, although they have positives and negatives. First big positive is that they do exactly what it says on the tin. Speed paint, emphasis on the "speed". My test minis took about 15 minutes each from start to finish, and that sped up even further when I was doing batch painting. I was doing zenithal highlighted figures, and they took on the light and shadow beautifully. Agreed with you about the crusader skin, too. For figures with a caucasian skintone this is just about perfect and better than pretty much any acrylic paint I've tried. However I do give the caveat that using them feels a little bit more like colouring in than it does like painting. It's hard to use them to create detail, even while they're excellent at accenting the detail that's already there. If I were doing a big batch project (and I've got full boxes of halflings and skeletons that I need to paint at some point, these would be perfect. And they provide a superb (if slightly sketchy) basecoat. However I'm unlikely to chuck out the rest of my acrylics any time soon.

I get what you mean about colouring in. You really have to not colour outside the lines 😬 But for troops they’re pretty good at getting the job done 👍

Recently got the Mega Set and tried it on a few figures that I Zenithal highlighted with an air brush. The one thing I found is that you have to be a bit careful with the depth of shading as the speed paints don't cover even a mid grey all that well so I would recommend using lighter grey with white highlights. They do give pretty good results and they're fun and fast to use.

Didn't notice any mention of the reactivation issue seen by everyone else. These aren't paints in my book if you can just add water to them and the become wet again. I suggest varnishing any finished mini if people are going to handle the models after painting. Hope this helps someone.
@MTGBella2 жыл бұрын
I actually didn’t have problems with reactivation when drying each model with a hair dryer (on cold setting) before the second layer. But varnish will definitely stop this if it’s a problem 😊 I like Liquitex matte spray varnish

@@MTGBella seems strange. I've tried them and even after leaving for days the reactivate. I won't be buying any more they are awful, the worst thing Armypainter has ever done in my opinion.
@MTGBella2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, that’s interesting. I only painted a small model, so I’ll have to see how they are on a bigger scale 🧐
@markhickson90872 жыл бұрын
@@MTGBella scale didn't have anything to do with it. Painting white over red speed paint gave me pink. I use contrast paint as part of my base paint selection. Correcting or painting over the top reactivated the speedpaint. Armypainter have acknowledged this behaviour and suggested varnishing before correction or glazing and definitely before handling. The "paint" is hopeless as far as I'm concerned. Strange that you didn't see it but glad you are happy!
@maverickman64862 жыл бұрын
@@markhickson9087 I would recommend using standard paint if your trying any "wet" or "thick" painting techniques over the speed paint. However, you are missing the point of the speed paint is: one coat and done. For most people and purposes, this will work great. It also appears you can paint over the speed paint as long as you don't douse the mini in a liquid.

I found this video very interesting, thank you. I noticed that you did not seem to have issues with the speed paints reactivating when you painted over them with other speed paints or the opaque white. I have seen many other videos that note that the speed paint reactivates pretty easily, and I even saw a comment from Army Painter about it recently, saying that if you don't allow adequate drying time it can reactivate. However, at least one video I watched let some pieces sit for a couple of days and they still reactivated. Can you say anything about your experiences on that issue specifically? Thanks again!
@MTGBella2 жыл бұрын
I dried each one with a hair dryer (cold setting so you don’t melt the plastic) before applying the second coat, and I saw no movement from the first one. I’m not sure how it is with air drying. If it’s something you’re noticing or worried about, try applying a coat of clear matte varnish or matte medium to seal the first layer 😊
@ryanlopezdevinaspre2 жыл бұрын
@@MTGBella Yes, I figured the coat of varnish would be sufficient, but it's also something I would just as soon avoid if possible. Especially since I would have to run it through my airbrush since brush on will just reactivate the paints. I love the hairdryer trick. I'm going to keep that in mind, if this is an issue for me. Thank you again!
@ogreman22292 жыл бұрын
@@ryanlopezdevinaspre I’ve seen a couple of places where The Army Painter have responded stating that on the models that reactivated even provided ample drying time semi gloss primer was used and that is part of the issue. You need to be sure to use a matte primer.

Great work, that necromancer turned out really well. I've ordered the mega set, and while I'm definitely going to be using them to batch-paint my backlog, I'm most interested in using them for wet-blending. It's a technique I've wanted to try for a while, but never got around to. From what I've seen in this and other videos, they work well for that. Do you have any tips?
@MTGBella2 жыл бұрын
I did notice the paint was drying faster than I expected while wet blending. So it will be interesting to see what it’s like painting a larger model in the same way. I think probably work on small sections at a time 👍

Excellent vid! Thank you for sharing! I was interested to see how the speed paint medium would work with pigments too, and am also hoping they release it in a larger form haha. Loved the results! Definitely thinking about picking up the mega set when I am able to, funds providing lol. Have some contrast still, but the speed paints look like they are more the consistency I'm looking for in a number of ways. That said, I'm also looking at making my own paints to try (mostly for fun and because I just enjoy the idea lol,) and also want to try out stuff like the Golden High Flow Acrylics too (have the white coming it to test it vs white ink). So the speed paints might be a later purchase and used on specific things for certain techniques. Not sure yet. They seem super handy though. Once again, thanks for the vid! Have a good one!
