Something I recently discovered - Vallejo acrylic polyurethane surface primer in "grey" might be a critical tool for Speedpaint. It is pre-thinned for airbrushing, but can be brushed on manually and has superior coverage to most soupy pure-white primers. The exact tint of grey is nearly identical to GW Grey Seer primer for Contrast paint. This means it is also light enough for Speedpaint to work correctly. Most importantly, since it can be easily brushed on, bulk-priming of models is possible without a rattle can or airbrush. In addition, I have discovered that it's really good for re-priming spot areas to reset them. The polyrethane in the mixture seems to resist color bleed due to minor reactivation of the Speedpaint under it - after a couple of coats, the surface is a sufficiently clean and solid for more Speedpaint or normal paint. On that note, a brush-on varnish that seems to work very well on Speedpaint is also Vallejo's acrylic varnishes. Put on a very thin coat, don't overload it, and I haven't seen Speedpaint run or distort so far. The varnish dries in a few seconds, locking things down. The very fast drying time of the Vallejo varnishes may be the key - there just isn't time for the Speedpaint to truly reactivate. These two specific Vallejo products have pretty much made Speedpaints practical and advantageous for me. I'm in a position where using rattle cans or airbrush set-up is not feasible and can only use brush-on products. Hopefully this helps others in the same boat.

And yes, i have found that the Speed Paint goes on it wonderfully! :) Thank you for sharing this with the community on here with your insight, hopefully this could be valuable information for others, and i think this now deserves to be placed as a pinned comment! :):)

Very useful info!. When you mention the varnish, do you mean the polyurethane, or the acrylic resin ones?. I own both and I'm curious about how the polyurethane one would work when shot through an airbrush (i'm currently waiting for my speedpaints to arrive so I have no way of testing it yet lol).

So, this has been a fantastic tool in my toolbox for me. I have issues with painting large groups of models, because with an injury many years ago, i can only paint for so long before my painting hand starts to shake from pain that begins to shoot through my arm. So, this stuff, and contrast paints in general, gives me a quick and dirty tool to paint entire mobs of enemies. But, at the same time, this stuff works really nicely for coloring metallic. bright silver with a speedpaint creates amazing colored metals, and if i want to give large mobs a nicer look, i do zenithal highlights in various layers, starting with a darker gray and working up to white to really bring them out and make them look pretty good without a lot of time for the pain and shaking to kick in. This video has actually given me ideas for new ways to use this paint though, and that is something that is always a sign of a great creator. Thank you so much for this video!

Right now I'm working on a collection of cyberpunk miniatures from the creator Papsikels over on My mini Factory, which I've been using for a game of Five Parsecs from home. He makes some fantastic sci-fi and cyberpunk models and I love his work. I don't see many creators doing cyberpunk, so it is really something different than a lot of miniatures available. I haven't seen that video, but will definitely check it out. Can't paint cyberpunk without a lot of metallic after all, and I'm always looking for more inspiration.

I have been afraid to try speed-paints for it possibly being a crutch and stopping me from getting better, your videos have made me realize they can just be another tool in the arsenal, gonna go get a set at my LGS today and after a practice or two I'll finally crack open those Norsca Rampagers, thank you!

I'm saving my pennies so i can buy the complete set! Sometimes it's just best to get some paints out and have a play with them to see what you can come up with, if you buy a bunch of "scrap minis" from eBay you can use them as testers - for me its a whole bunch of Goblins. I hope to get into Blood Bowl this year as i like the minis and the game looks really fun to play! Enjoy the Norse team when you get around to them! :):)

This video earned my subscription right away. It has triggered me into considering painting again. Al my projects used to be: black primer and basecoat with the darkest tone and building up highlights in at least three different layers. Then use a wash and re-highlight to bring up the contrast and add layers of shading in between. This line of paint seems to allow for so much more in only two steps: basecoat, before dry you can highlight by dry brushing off paint. Afterwards, make a pass with a waterered down version for deeper shadows where needed. It's like two layers of paint that almost accomplish what 6 layers used to do.

Happy to have you onboard Joris! :) yes i used to do pretty much the exact same thing, i would spend a considerable amount of time on miniatures and because i only saw the Minis in a White Dwarf magazine - thats what i thought they had to be. But through my own discoveries and seeing other brands - as well as social media it was great to see just how much is out there for hobbyists! And then when these paints came along i did get excited as i wanted to combine how i normally paint with these and have even more ways to finish a miniature/army. As long as you are having fun and enjoy being creative whilst you paint, then i only see it as a positive and i hope that whatever you do end up painting - you enjoy it! :):)

Thank you very much, I had a blast playing around with these and I was pleasantly surprised with what possibilities they can achieve. For the warrior of the dead I’m not 100% sure how long per model as I did 5 in about 3 hours but that was with adding highlights in as well - because I’m a sucker for that sort of thing. Without doing the highlights then you can knock off at least an hour of that. But I shall go through all of that on the next video about it :) So coming from me it will be the warrior of the dead next, and then it will be a couple more fellowship videos as there is a lot to do! I find painting to be one of the best parts of the hobby, you can have the same army but it could look totally different depending on how creative people are or how they interpret what they should look like. @@SwordsandBrushes kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnKqimeLgriWr7c - the intro to the battletech videogame gives a good at a glance timeline to establish the premise of the game/universe. Mankind discovered how to jump to other systems with a 'jump drive', and soon began to colonize. Eventually, Earth based forces became an empire and began to dominate the outlying systems, forming the Terran Hegemony. From there, they formed a military force called the Star League, given the best technology, equipment, personnel, and training in order to keep the sometimes oppressive peace. Science and human efforts at colonization of the stars advanced rapidly, but eventually an insurrection occurred, called the Amaris coup. The Terran Hegemony was almost ripped apart, and the leader of the Star League, Alexander Kerensky, rallied those under him to take as much of the devastating high tech military equipment as they could gather and head to the galactic north, in a bid to deny the resources for war. However, without the Star League, the Terran Hegemony collapsed, and remaining sectors came under total rulership of various great houses of influential families. Succession wars were waged to take the throne of Terra, but non succeeded, and the great houses wore down their economies and militaries in recurring catastrophic wars until they nearly bled themselves of all of their means with which to fight. That is the age that Battletech is largely set in, the year 3025, just before the fourth succession war. Later, a group called the clans invades in 3050, coming from the same place the Star League sailed off into, the far Galactic North, forcing the 'Inner Sphere' composed of the 5 great houses to band together to repel the invaders, who are armed with superior technology and genetically modified soldiers. Further on, a civil war occurs between the two most cooperative/allied houses, resulting in more devastation, then a holy war, then a dark age, which lead to a republic dominating the inner sphere. Finally, the remnants of the clans pushed forward and took Terra in 3137. It's got a lot of timelines to play in, a lot of tech levels to use (or not use), and a lot of make-do grittiness with a game of thrones-esque political backdrop. Much of the narrative and almost all of the tabletop game are focused on the exploits of 'Mech Warriors', pilots of giant walking robots loaded with guns, armor, and equipment, like a high tech knight.

These got me painting again after about 30 years+ of not painting. I've been painting the figures from Tiny Epic Dungeon and Tainted Grail. Will probably work my way up to Nemesis if all goes well then look through the rest of my boardgame collection. I've found if you go over a line or touch another bit of the model by mistake and you're quick, a watery brush will let you almost wash it off or thin it down so far it's easy to paint over. I've been using the greys as a wash (particularly with metal) using water but I must get myself some Speedpaint Medium after watching this. I bought the small starter set and was waiting for the big one you demo'd but by the time it came out I'd bought most of the paints in it separately so there was no point.

I'm just starting out and instead of buying the starter set I bought the mega set for reasons: It comes with the bottle of medium and I'm an avid board gamer and want to play with painted minis and I get 3D printed stuff for some games like Gloomhaven, Tiny Epic Dungeons, Dune Imperium, Marvel United and Star Wars Imperial Assault! So I'm gonna need quite a few colors

@SwordsandBrushes

Be careful with shade paints, they can come out a bit rough on white cloaks - if you mix it with some medium to thin it down, it will also apply on the surface smoother. Create a layer, let it fully dry and then go in again for your darker areas if necessary and you should be grand :):)

I have been trying AB Speed Paints for the first time and really loving them with zenethal under priming. But then I ran into the purple which just seemed non-translucent and covered the black, grey, white under priming completely without shading variation at all. So I repainted the High Elf mage cloak (lots of folds) all white, and I am going to try it again with water-thinned purple right after watching this video. Fingers crossed. Otherwise I love the speed paints.

no i haven't tried them on a wet palette, but i could certainly think that it would do that as it is very liquidy. I tend to use a simple plastic artist palette for it - a bit of the medium in there too and it stays perfect for more than enough time when using it :)

Yes, but I found you need to vanish the base layer or it can remove both layers.
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! From what i have painted with them i would say you certainly have more time and control by using oil washes, and i would still use them for that intention. The Speed paints i would say have a limited time for full control if you were to cover everything then wipe it off, i did some horses recently and it worked well that way - but if left on (say the next day) then you can take some of it off - but it will still leave a glazed looking stain - which is ok for things like tanks perhaps? I think they are perfect if you want to make a grime/ streak look - i have does this and it works great for that. But i still think an oil wash is top trumps for anything more :) I hope that helps a bit, and you get to experiment with them to create something awesome for your miniatures :) And also i agree with Wulfseal too! :):)

which Speed Paint do you recommend to use for painting good plate armour (for good guys) using the silver undercoat as per usual for metals?
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, I would probably stick to just normal shade paints (such as dark tone) and highlights (shining silver) from that point on and leave out speed paints. If i was to add any extra elements such as sword handles or armour details then i would pick them our with normal brass or gold paints - as the speed paints would be a bit harder to control for tiny areas like these. However if you wanted a slight tint to an armour then you could really thin down some speed paints to mimic a shiny reflective surface. For example if you had a red cape, you could thin down a tiny it of Red and apply it on the armour near the cloth - just to show the reflection of it. Hope that helps a bit? :)

I had the worst time getting even coats with the darker blues. All the other colors stay very consistent, but if you don’t have the perfect amount of the darker blue on your brush it’s either overly dark (couldn’t see any detail) or way to light (very light coat just looked like a light blue base coat).

@@SwordsandBrushes Ive been painting for years (warhammer 40k) and recently Core Space and Gloomhaven. I want to do an Aliens and an AvP Arcade Game resin filled diorama using this method. Im not sure I liked how the raised parts looked thinned and the thick applied mini (base coated) looked very caked. Was it applied heavily? Could it have been applied lighter or spread around more? Id like to see the zenithal whites and greys actually STAINED by the contrast color instead of just a layer of color resting on top and drying. Does that make sense? Would ink contrasts work better for this?

@SwordsandBrushes Жыл бұрын
Ah cool, sounds like you have some good hobby plans :) Ive not tried inks so i cant comment on how they work. For the Speedpaints ive used them both as a "one layer" out of the bottle and also thinned them down with medium and then water, and they all come up with different results. For the most part, using the medium would help the most. I think by the way you mean staining then you want the paint to be very translucent, so adding more medium would be useful.

Some very good questions there! Where are you from, i think the release date is soon for these (end of the month i think) It's nice having so much choice as a beginner and not only by brands but then also by the style of paints - it could get a bit overwhelming! My favourite colours at the moment are Malignant Green ( as i have used it for my Undead and Goblins so far) Dark wood is also excellent, as i wanted a dark brown in the range and i adore the reds. They are so vibrant and punchy! but im sure as i paint more i will find more uses for all of them :) I have found that just Gun Metal is great for a basecoat for these (as seen on the Minas Tirith warrior section of the video) It would be interesting to see it on a copper colour - i have not tried that yet. But i did do a test model today with a Gold basecoat, i think that has some potential - if you are after a sci fi looking armour feel. Perhaps something chaotic/undead in Fantasy would be quite beneficial. But i think for my hobby, i have just scratched the surface of what these can do and the output i could potentially have. Im sure i will follow up with more videos using these paints. What are you going to try them on next?

Yes from playing around with the paints I think coming back to it a day after seems to be fully dry - I should have mentioned in the video but from what I have seen on all my miniatures so far is that they dry in a nice matte finish - and I really like this :) I do tend to touch the model as I paint (just the way I do it! Haha) and I think if you can try and not do this it will help. But certainly it’s a new range, and they seem quite exciting to use. What do you think you will try them out on first? :)

Thank you, I think with anything new you just have to play and test things out to see what works and what may not. I used to paint water colours when. I was much younger so I was used to something like this. But overall, I think this range will fit nicely into my existing paint range and I’m looking forward to creating armies even quicker now!

I'm keen to get into painting miniatures, having fallen headlong into the Final Girl game, but not sure where to start. Would you suggest this as the best place for a total beginner?
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 8 ай бұрын
It's certainly fun and therapeutic once you get into it! :) The speed paints i would say is a good way to start and get things done in a quicker fashion and getting into the hobby. However i would say that it is a little unforgiving and you need to be beater than if you were to paint with normal acrylics. For example the paints go on well and work best of a lighter colour such as white, however if you are a bit messy when painting different parts to a model- which is easy to do! You need to cover the white area again - or if it goes on another speedpaint colour it alters the previous layer. With normal acrylics its much easier to tidy up and fix parts as you go, and i would suggest a starter set of normal acrylics and maybe pick a few colours that you like of speedpaint to try them out. Or if you get a starter set of both, then you will have enough colours to keep you going for quite a while as you build up your confidence in miniature painting, It's all about having fun as you paint minis up anyway so just dive in and have a go! :):)

I do have a question- been struggling to do face skin on my lotr Rohan models with these paints, are there any tips?
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think the skin tone is the best, i hope that when they do expand the range then it will have a better colour to use - You could just paint the skin using a normal colour from the range such as Kobold Skin or tanned flesh and then apply the crusader skin as a thin "wash" that would work ok - it would just be a different way of using the speedpaints :) I will experiment a bit from January as Rohan will be my main army next year that i will work on :)

So the paint reactivates, but if we can get a good grasp on how/why, it’s a feature, not a bug.
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
From what i have painted in the last couple of weeks it does reactivate if you paint over it pretty much straight away with another colour, otherwise you can force it to by really watering down the paint or brushing over the same area a few times over - and i have come to find some really good uses for this so far. :):)

I tried the starter set and found that varnish (ordinary water-based acrylic varnish) still reactivated speedpaint after the paint was left for over a week to cure. Some colours are worse than others. The green seems very steady, but the brown was particularly bad and ran as readily after a week as after a few hours. The red wasn't much better. For me, a disappointment.
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
Oh thats a shame, what varnish did you use? The only spray on varnish i have at the moment is the citadel one and that worked fine for me, i would like to try the Vallejo ones through the airbrush to see how that will go :)

When I first heard about the reactivation I knew it was going to be a feature, not a defect. Scale modellers use reactivating paints with great results.

I've been using and testing speedpaint for about 3 months now started out practicing on about 300 plastic toy soldiers to learn what I could get away with doing with the paint and I 100% guarantee you it is not for beginners and for somebody experience it's a hard learning curve to paint an entire figure with it took me 12 days to do one miniature that actually had detail
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome, it's good to get through a lot - reduces the backlog a bit :) Yes i agree, it's an unforgiving paint for a beginner who has done little to no painting before as you have to be precise when applying it. Most of my painting (before speed paints) was to just pop on the basecoats and not worry about getting paint onto another section as i would paint over that part anyway. So this was quite different and made me steady my hand a bit more! :)

you all are sleeping on the re-activation of the paints. this makes speedpaint errors so much easier to fix than "redo the primer layer". all you have to do is go back with some water and rub it off. just make sure to varnish when done because it also means that one unfortunately placed drop of water has the potential to ruin the paintjob
