I use Gravelord Grey Speedpaint for the boltgun and it comes out really good without the metallic shine. Then I can use gunmetal for the barrel and magazine to separate the stock from the external parts.

yes, eventually I need to do my storm troopers for imperial assault and looking at them, you're best just going with a white primer, glossy finish and maybe the mildest of shading
@alessiodecarolis Жыл бұрын
Very neat, I use GW Apothecary White for base, but your method surely works better for armours, logically shading on a surcoat it's different . It's a pity that GW stopped selling single figures as in the past, except for some (very costly) characters.

I'm using Contrast Medium with my current mix of Marine Juice. I like it better than Lahmian Medium because you get the same thinning of the paint but you also get some of the contrast paint properties. It really contracts back into the recesses and leaves the flat surfaces a bit less shaded.

I think if you want to reduce some time/get a different color out of the boltgun, when you do the black grey layer, you could also just throw that on the bolter. I prefer a dark undercoat for metal like that and it could save some time on a second coat there. Did you try/consider that and decide against it or just not something you thought was necessary?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
I've found that Iron Hands Steel - and most metallics, really - will still need a second coat even over black to get a smooth, solid finish to them. It doesn't really save any time to put down the black or black grey on the bolter first, versus just putting a couple coats of metal on it over the white. The end result is more or less the same, and saves that fractional amount of time. It adds up across an army!
@JadeFalcon777 Жыл бұрын
In your experience would this technique work well for a bunch of white coats/cloth? I'm trying to decide how to do some 20mm Finns in snowsuits for WW2 and have been looking at various quick white approaches.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
Should do. White is white past a point and with a slightly grainy, brown-ish recess shade it'll work for cloth in the field as well.

You can reduce the chalkiness by wiping the brush in a non absorbent surface, like a paper plate. Outstanding recipe as always!
@petersaczko6192 Жыл бұрын
Please Sir, a glaze of liquitex Transparent Mixing White (zinc white PW4) will remove the chalkiness after a white drybrush on the white armour.

This might be a silly question but can you do the praxeti white drybrushing part with a regular drybrush if you don't have a makeup brush?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
It'll almost certainly work just the same. I like to use the makeup brushes since it's a little harder to go overboard, but a drybrush is a drybrush as long as you're not applying too much paint at a time.

Have you tried Soulblight Grey as the shade for the white armor?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
I'm sure it'd work fine, but the point in this method is having everything shaded using the same all-over wash to save time. Soulblight Grey would give a much cleaner, slightly lighter finish, I'd guess.
@shauntaylor9251 Жыл бұрын
Would a slightly damp brush remove some of the chalkyness of the white dry brushing ?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
Probably, but it's far quicker to just *dry* drybrush and let the varnish cover up the chalkiness if it emerges. Wetting your drybrush is another step where things can get out of hand and go sideways.

I do not understand how people can put metalics over white and get it looking alright. Whenever I do it it ends up very dull and as if the white eats up the metalic shine. So now I always pre paint it black for metals and brown for gold since I’ve gotten tired of sad looking metal colors :(
