How to make an amazing Norwegian sponge cake - by ARNE & CARLOS

Күн бұрын

In todays KZbin video we demonstrate how to make a Norwegian sponge cake called Bløtkake. The sponge cake's name, its literal translation is "wet cake" in English.
We have made this one before and have now learnt from past mistakes and are aiming for success this time. After baking the cake, we cool it down and proceed to slice it into three layers. For the filling, we whip cream and mix it with strawberry jam then decorate it with strawberries. But will we have enough cream for the decoration?
Hopefully it wont be a Dollygate cake!

Most people are NOT complaining about noise from mixer. We can just turn down sound. Perhaps do not listen to people who just want to cause trouble and strife. Find your happiness in what you do with no worry. Be well, stay safe. Hugs. Thanks to you all for making and sharing fun videos! ❤❤😊

Every single baking session with the two of you is hilarious. They are so enjoyable, and even I can’t get a slice of your cake, it’s still such a treat! As someone who have baked hundreds of bløtkaker throughout my years, I must admit I was a bit worried that the sponge would deflate, and I was stoked when it didn’t! I didn’t think there was enough air whipped into the eggs, and sukkerbrød is usually put into a cold oven, not preheated. But I’ve never wanted so much to be proved wrong, and boys, that you did! The cake looked so yummy, and there can never be too many strawberries! Oh btw, Victoria sponge have butter in the batter, so it’s a bit more what we call formkake. The question of greasing the sides of the spring form/tin or not: I remember Ingrid Espelid (Norway’s Julia Child) wanted to look into this, and she baked one cake with greased sides, and one without. Result? No difference what so ever. But the myth lives on. However, if you use butter, also dust it with flour. It’ll make sure the cake slides right out of the spring form. .

Yes! We also buttered, aka "greased," the inside of any cake pan, then lightly floured it. Although we never used parchment paper, our cakes always came clean out of the pan. I love seeing/learning how other people/places bake and cook. 🥰

😂😂😂 Oh, what fun!😂😂😂 And yes, Arne, I also remember my mum and Granny always making this cake whithout the baking sheet. Come to think of it, I don't think they had proper baking sheets back then. I was taught that you are not to put butter on the sides of the mold as that prevents the sponge from "getting a grip" when raising.

In uk its called Beating the eggs & sugar😊to line a tin, you first make an oblong of baking paper & trim long edge so it looks like a fringe, place insde sides of tin with fringe spread on bottom then cut 2 circles same size of base & lay them over fringe. Thats how we have lined cake tins in uk for many years. Love this epesode.

That’s not too many strawberries! We have Strawberry Shortcake here in the states. It’s a small cake, about 3-4 inches across and 1-2 inches tall, topped with whipped cream, then covered with strawberries. I’m not a baker so I buy little cakes, but I can whip cream. Yum! And that hand mixer is not too loud! My grandma could whip cream by hand faster than I could track down the mixer and plug it in. 😂 most of the rest of us need a mixer. Thanks so much to your friend Kate for introducing us. Jan from Oklahoma

Absolutely hysterical! You two are so funny together! Just a suggestion on the egg cracking. It is best to crack the egg on a flat surface, instead of the edge of a bowl or the scary knife method. The flat surface cracks the shell without pushing shell into the egg inside. You're less likely to get shell or contamination or break the yolk. Just a thought. Definitely going to try this cake!! thank for the joy and the cake! a trick from my Granny: don’t cut your cake layers with a knife! just cut a little line with a small knife around, lay a strong sewing thread around the cake, cross the thread ends at the front, take a breath and pull the ends to different sides! try it, it’s fun! I have a strong thread with the ends knotted around some bottle corks in my kitchen drawer just for this!

Your bløtkake looked great. I used to make them to take to work. If you have problems slicing the layers you could put it in the freezer for a while to make it easier to slice. I often put a layer of raspberry jam with whipped cream on top between the layers. If strawberries are not available, you can also decorate with raspberries and blueberries. It's an old standard and easy to make. Thanks for sharing.
