Thank you so much! You took me back to 1972 when I made my wedding dress on a Bernina like yours. So great when Bernina were still Swiss made. When you open the top like you nearly did, very little real machine oil is all it needs. I have machine envy.... Thank you also for sewing as it should be done, ironing as you go! I have stopped watching tv when there is sewing, because most people have never been taught the basics. I grew up in South Africa and had very strict sewing teachers and so thankful because it can never be taken away from you. I have a new Bernina and it is rubbish and expensive.... would love an old one that is sturdy and has no flashing lights and a million stitches that I will never use. In the seventies I also had a Volksie and my son always used to jump in the "hole" in the back, so many lovely memories... You light up this old girls life every weekend. Blessings xx

A lot of sewers, including myself, consider Bernina machines excellent. You can find their plastic gears can crack but are still available. Really strong and reliable machines. I hope you keep it going for the future. You have a gem there. In my opinion.

I like to work on some more tangible creative projects from time to time (since writing isn't, really, at least not with my handwriting style :-)). I have been working on a secret project for an artist I met on Twitter and after we meet this weekend (for the first time, yey!) I can't wait to start raving about your website and your podcasts. You have a very friendly, open approach and I'm sure you manage to pull many people into crafting. I look forward to following you and hunting for your craft books in book shops.

the term you are searching for is napp - ie you want the fabric to be in the same orientation when making a garment. There is an easy way to sharpen scissors that I learned from a friend who learned it from her grandmere. Find a glass bottle with a narrow neck and try cutting it with the dulled scissors. It will not fix nicks but it touches up the blade so it cuts much better. It even works on cheap kiddy scissors. To know if it is working try cutting a piece of fabric before and then try again touching up the blades.

My fabric scissors have bright orange handles, so that everyone in the house knows to never, ever, ever touch them or use them. There are dire consequences for even thinking about using them!. I remember my mother going ballistic because one of her darling children had used her good fabric scissors to cut paper dolls or to work on a school project. I never understood why she got so angry----now I get it. The most important tool for a person who sews.

Do you recommend Bernina, by that I mean since you have not been sewing a while would you still encourage me to purchase a Bernina? I say this because my old Janome needed repair and "The Old Sewing Machine Man", my repair person who is a wizard lifetime career person, told me many machines today are made of all plastic parts and he recommends older machines??? He has a showroom full of them. Do you have any comments or advice? Also what about a good iron? Mine has a retractable cord so ineptly placed that when you iron you tend to press the button and the cord recoils!

Amazing fabrics, can one still buy them. I love the way you make sewing easy for every one, and not having to buy all the expensive item for making quilts and pillow. I so enjoy your free hand teachings. Thank you.

ohhhh-I love topstiching! and yes, if it's "organic" it looks poorly made. Also very trendy in hand made jewelry--looks like they didn't know what they're doing, also very unstable and will not last.

I just got new scissors.....Gingher made in Italy. I adore them. I even bought the 3 inch little stork scissors to trim thread and use for embroidery also. A new pair of scissors is so great a gift. I got the free pattern from this pillow and I'm chuffed it's while watching you make one. I need some new fabric.

In a pinch, use flannel scraps of even upcycle a towel or a blanket for your batting. It adds depth to to your design to stitch around the flower in the center. Love your tutorials! They really get the creative ideas going in my head. I love my old Kenmore machine, great sound. Thanks you two! Sew on!

To make seams stronger in quilts you press seams to one side not open which would o weaken the seam for a usable bed quilt. (Hand and machine Quilter since 1980. ;-)
