Just to give younger viewers some perspective , I remember back in the early 1980s, when I used to buy Muscle and Fitness and all the bodybuilding books. You would never see pictures of Robbie Robinson, Sergio Oliva or Casey Viator or even Larry Scott. You would catch glimpses of them in books. Sergio's picture was so rare, that he literally was a myth. You had no idea what he looked liked. Now, with all the information being more transparent, you realize the Weiders were running a business. Robbie and Sergio were black, so they were not as marketable as Arnie and Franco. Casey Viator was Arthur Jones' prodigy and Larry Scott adhered to Vince Gironda's training system, not the Weiders. Eventually, Joe and Ben brought out Flex magazine and as Arnold's movie career blossomed and fitness exploded in the 80s, hindsight would prove the Weiders to be astute businessmen. But, it was a shame. When I would see the rare picture of Robbie Robinson, I would think that his physique was better than all the guys that were on the covers of Muscle and Fitness. When I finally saw pictures of Sergio, then I knew why they called him the Myth. Really sad that they were not given their due during their peak.

You need to understand the culture at that time. BLACKS were protesting and marching. Whites were in charge and let it be known. Many blacks at that time were not to upset the cart so to speak. Robby kept his mouth shut ( for the most part). Magazine sales decreased when a black man was on the cover. That is fact. Today, it's completely different. A black man on the cover would not decrease sales today.

This white culture you speak of derailed black people and their ability to live the ‘American Dream’ for hundreds of years. Robby was a victim of it and so were millions of other Black people. It’s unfair and has had lasting negative effects upon Black people to this very day yet white culture just look at it as an ‘oh well, that was just how it was back then’ and ignore the generational ramifications it’s had on Black people over multiple decades. I remember hearing Arnold say that, at one point, he was the only IFBB pro making a living at it, “so I had to win.” If that meant making sport out of Lou Ferrigno’s hearing impairment, Robby Robinson’s skin color, Franco Columbu’s height or anything else he could spin to his perceived advantage, it was “game on.” I hesitate to say that Arnold was truly a racist. So happens that I had a high school friend (Ed) who was a serious bodybuilder. He won a local contest that Arnold just happened to be present for. Afterwards, Arnold spent nearly an hour giving Ed pointers on training and posing. This was before the first “Conan” movie. Arnold was “comic book famous” at best, and had nothing to gain by investing even a second’s worth of time and knowledge into a 17 year old black kid after a contest in Baltimore. Today, I doubt he remembers. Ed, all these years later, has never forgotten. None of this excuses Arnold’s more inappropriate behavior or comments…but I still don’t think he was quite “that guy” then, and certainly isn’t today. But a ruthless competitor? For certain.

Saw Robby guest pose in Oakland, CA around 1980. He didn't look very big in his track suit while signing autographs, but when he got on stage later that evening, he blew everybody away. He was incredible!

RR's definitely 1 of the all time greats in Bodybuilding, without question. That said, Calling what I see/hear etc, what things sound is creating this type of racial controversy at the most upside down social time I can ever think of. Hoping to bring financial attention in the direction of the hard up. After all this time.

Arnold would berate Lou Ferrigno too. Make fun of his handicap, call him a big Oaf. I dont think there ever was a magazine in the Arnold era that didnt have Robbie in it. Robbie was very popular in the 80s. He was better than Serge Nubret and Chris Dickerson. Only Black Body builder better than Robbie was Albert Beckles.

Don't forget his racism. Also made sure he prevented opportunities for people of color who were even better. Thanks Arnold for proving why affirmative action has always been necessary in this country.

Arnold just wanted to win at everything. So if he could get rid of competition or try and get into someone’s head he would do it. He just wanted to be the best and the only one. Remember he hated Stallone too.

I have travelled, Europe, Middle East,Africa,USA and the Caribbean. The Caribbean is the only place where l have seen black ripped to threads bodies. Some of these are my family so l know they never got these bodies from gyms or exercise. Six pack well defined triceps. So a white man's body really.
