As a junior in high school, I and three other players on our team went to the Pocono Mountains(PA) basketball camp, run by Coach Knight when he was the head coach at Army...On the first morning addressing the camp in a small airplaine hanger type of gym, coach told all of us to get up from our chairs and get in the defensive posture & to shuffle our our legs up and down...this went on for what seemed an eternity as he pushed us to keep at it...finally he had us stop...all of us were physically drained, but somehow we got through it...he then said to us "if you think your folks sent you here to go on a summer vacation, you're sadly mistaken"(and that is putting it mildly to what was conveyed to us)...to this day, I'm both sore & exhausted...I came back home having learned basketball, but more importnatly the meaning of discipline, work ethic & perserverance...traits instilled in me to this day... I wouldn't trade that weeks experience for anything, period...thank you Coach Bob Knight.

Say what you want about his methods, but the results speak for themselves. Not only did his team win at basketball, his players all graduated with educations. He encouraged his players to take business classes and major in business because nothing is more competitive than business and he wanted players that are competitive. When recruiting, he stressed the educational opportunities instead of focusing on the basketball. His players didn't only win on the court, they continue to win every day with their educations that they earned while playing for Coach Knight.

Everything Coach Knight says in this interview is dead on. Theres no doubt that a kick in the ass is a better motivator than a pat on the back. He uses the same techniques that our military use, and they are some of the very best people we have in this country. Somewhere along the line, our society became pussified in how we raise our children, and we have a lot more dumb and go nowhere adults as a result of it. Of all the teachers I ever had in school, the ones who were tough on me are truly the ones I remember, and learned most from. Coach Knight got the best out of his players, and had more of the blue chip recruits had the ability to be less selfish and go to Indiana, the Hoosiers would have won 10 Championships under his tenure. Nobody did more with less. God bless you Coach Knight. You did it the right way ALWAYS.

People are motivated by different things. Knight mostly motivated by fear mongering, but that doesn't work in all cases and it's not sustainable. Constant criticism of a person can result in defiance as they don't feel that authority figure is looking out for their best interests. Knight's general philosophies are sound, but his dictatorial approach ultimately undermined what he tried to teach. Knight failed to understand that respect is a two way street. While he demanded it, he never bothered to reciprocate it back to his players or anyone that dealt with him. Blue chip athletes never signed on with Knight because he was poor stepping stone for the NBA. People on the outside loved him because he produced wins, but he ultimately was just an asshole that cared about his legacy and ego. The guy had multiple issues that were documented on and off the court and it's easy to conclude he had a serious temper problem. “Not sustainable”. 903 wins, 3 National titles, Olympic gold medal, Pan Am gold medal, NIT title, 13 Big Ten titles, several coach of the year awards, and one of the most copied coaches in sports history over the course of about 30 yrs. Would you like to choose a different statement than “not sustainable” because, as is, you look pretty fucking ignorant. Knight didn’t care about his ego. He cared about winning. That’s what he was paid to do-win games. At Indiana you’re expected to win championships in basketball. He cared about kids getting an education. At Indiana you’re expected to graduate. That was the culture he created and sustained. Indiana basketball has never been the same. The culture is dead. It’s now like ALL other programs. One and the same. And they don’t win. And they get sanctioned by the NCAA for violating rules. It’s sad how far the program has sunk. I imagine it’ll never again return to its former glory because coaches/men like Knight don’t exist anymore. Knight was never a good boy who conformed to the system like a good little bitch. I respect that. He stood alone.

some good glimpses of a young Isiah Thomas here on the court. Zeke always did have good things to say about Bobby Knight. Thomas was the exceptionally rare case of a Knight player who did leave early to go to the NBA. I think there was only one other player who did, can't remember his name now. From what I remember, Knight gave Zeke his blessing to go because he knew of Isiah's background and situation.

Knight would have to be. He is a better coach than all those other guys. Coach K is the only one out of that group that deserves to be in the same company as Knight partly bc he was taught by Knight at Army. Wooden and Smith paid players. They had rosters full of nba players. So did coach K for that matter. Only 2 or 3 of Knights teams were deep with nba talent: 74-75, 75-76, 80-81. He won with great college players but not with nba talent-level players.

I was a small college All-American in the 80's (no joke) and the reason I reveal that is to offer a different perspective than Coach Knight (who I am a big fan of). I was absolutely more motivated by praise than by criticism. Criticize me and I would shut down, praise me and I play even harder. I was very self-motivated, would work on my own for hours during the off-season. My college coach, now a retired D-1 Hall of Fame coach (again, no joke) who spent most of his career at a mid-major was a teacher. He would tell me how to do something different if I was doing it wrong - I wanted that. But to be screamed at and intimidated, No Thank You. Different people have different emotional makeups and do not all respond the same way, as Coach Knight thinks. I loved watching his teams, he is fascinating to listen to at a clinic or, on his weekly radio show, but I could have never played for a guy like that.

You're very wise even at a young age to figure out what was right for you. Some players need a pat on the but and some need a kick. Bobby Knight is my favorite coach but he is definitely not for everyone and he is the first to say that. If you can take someone like him most his players go on to be successful in life. The full court press is over overrated as a defense. I ran it with some teams but only when we were so outmanned upfront we had to. There's nothing wrong with it but it can kill you as much as is can help you. It depends on your team makeup. Straight up man defense in the half court should be equally disruptive and requires an ass load of effort. And I would include getting rebounds in that effort.

I personally think Bob Knight had some form of Autism. His unique ability was an attention to details. He chose to direct that ability towards basketball. His harsh attitude was his way of dealing with sensory stimulation and not being able to interact in a social setting as it pertains to social behavioral cues. If I had to further define it I'd say he probably had Asperger's. His IQ was probably well above normal. But his inability to understand how to interact in a social setting both scared him and aggravated the hell out of him. But make no mistake about it, he was a genius. Think Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.
