They were always college kids up until '92 when they let pros compete at the Olympic Games for the first time. And guess what? By 1984 they won all of them but 2 times ('72 and '80): they ended with the silver medal in 1972 and in 1980 they boycotted the 'soviet games' and didn´t participate. So, winning the gold medal at that time with college kids was nothing out the norm.

In 1988, the US placed 3rd. But in 1984, they didn’t lose a game in the Olympics and I watched the NBA team get smoked twice by a team led by some kid who they couldn’t contain named Michael Jordan. That was the larger point if you’d have kept reading instead of thinking you’re somehow teaching me something here. A team of NBA All-Stars with prime Bird, prime McHale, Parish, Isaiah Thomas, Mark Aguirre…didn’t just lose - they got their asses whipped. I remember bc I was alive and watched it live. I’m 49 years old and ran a sports cards and collectibles shop for 20 years. That shop is all online now. I know the game of basketball. It’s my job to know seeing as basketball 🏀 and football 🏈 are my top sellers. Anything else you’d like to add to a topic I’d bet money (and lots of it) that I know more about than you?

And before that whey WON every single one of them except for the '72 in a very controversial last shot that gave them the first loss. Go back to your shop. And for the record, they were 63-0 up until that controversial defeat at '72 with all 'college kids' as you mentioned. So, yes, winning the gold medal with a bunch of kids was the norm back these days, kid.

@@jackbombay1423 There was still a team that was put together in 1980 smart guy. They went 4-1 in preparation for the Olympics, only losing to the NBA team they scrimmaged. That was routine…and my point. Isiah Thomas, Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman, Sam Bowie, Alton Lister, Rodney McCray, Darnell Valentine, Buck Williams were all on the squad. Look it up like you had to do every other thing you think you’re teaching me. The POINT is that every 4 years, we had our college best scrimmage the NBA’s best in preparation for the Olympics. The only time the NBA lost was in 1984, and they lost twice. Jordan was the best player on the court. That’s the point. Bobby Knight who knew the game better than both of us put together said he was the best he’d ever seen before he stepped foot on an NBA floor. That’s the point. I’m proud of you for catching the intended sarcasm- Jimmy Carter was Biden before Biden. It doesn’t change the fact that a team was still prepped and ready and went 4-1 preparing for games they never went to. You learn something new every day. My 7 year old nephew was flying to Denver to visit his dads family. He sat next to Bob Knight on the plane. My nephew said, “ my granny likes you a lot but my paw paw doesn’t like you at all.” Coach said, “where do they live?” He answered, “Kentucky.” Coach laughed and said, “i’ll take 50% approval rating from there any day.” This Kentucky boy hates losing to Indiana but Coach is a class act.

Coach Knight told his friend Stu Inman, the General Manager of the Portland Trailblazers to draft Jordan over Sam Bowie in 1984. Inman told Knight .. 'But, I need a Center'. Knight's response .. 'Well, play Jordan at Center'. Jordan fell to number 3, and the Chicago Bulls picked him up. Rest is history!

I went to Bob Knight basketball camp in 1980 when I was 16. Middle of the summer and 95 degrees every day. My HS coach was there too with his two young boys. One day, Bob was giving a talk in the gym and makes an off hand comment something like “if you can find me a better point guard than Isaiah Thomas, it’ll snow a foot tomorrow.” Later that night at dinner the two boys were insisting their dad find a way to get winter coats. Dad says “it’s 95 degrees out, why in the world would you want winter coats?” They both responded in earnest “Bob Knight said it’s going to snow a foot tomorrow”. I’ve never seen anyone command a room like the general.

That's right, I was at Dick Bennett's Basketball camp, asked Coach Bennett How Teri Porter was doing in Olympics tryouts that summer. Teri Porter had the flu and was picked as one of the Olympic alternates. UWSP div.3 , Teri Porter played some good ball for Portland against Jordan's Bulls, some great battles. I was going into my Senior of Highschool, I have never seen anyone play which such intensity as Jordan, and never seen anyone Coach with more intensity than Knight. The Greatest are often not liked.. Knight deserves credit for realizing Jordan's ability in college, but he was the #3 pick in the draft. It's not as if people didn't universally expect him to be an elite perennial all-star type player. He just wasn't seen as an all time great the way Bob saw him.

@@Trancymind the all rookie team doesn't matter. Especially back then before advanced analytics the voters were clueless. He only played 15 min a game that season so of course his stats aren't going to look that good. Per minute, though, his rookie performance was extremely impressive (especially for an 18 year old). Also, one playoff game doesn't matter. Judge players based on their overall skill level and their entire season performance over the last three seasons relative to their age. Kobe's first two seasons were excellent considering he was 18 and 19. Kobe was definitely an elite prospect coming out of high school. It's just teams foolishly thought picking kids with no college experience was too risky. People definitely saw Kobe as having elite potential.

Kevin Garnett had way more elite potential than Kobe believe it or not. Both were drafted out of high school. I’m a coach and I couldn’t agree more. Most of the time by a parent who couldn’t even play the game themselves, or that don’t understand the rules/laws of the game. I once had a parent who was questioning my coaching abilities, and when he was finished having his say, I stated… “I will tell you what. If you really want to be a coach. No problem. @@cheesemouse7774 LOL!....I have to say, these types of parents, in my humble opinion are the least of a coach's worries.....its not to say they know nothing, but their feedback is certainly something that can be entertained.....after all, some of the best NFL coaches never played a down in their life as well.....but back to the parent type....the worst type are the parents that show up and guilt coaches into somehow feeling obligated to play their kids or the ones that have some kind of School Board connection or influence on a coaches job.......let alone their kids or kids that show up and somehow manipulate a coaches judgement....at some point, there needs to be accountability and explanation as to why decisions are made.....when a kid that gets sparse playing time is consistently outplaying his peers in practice this is not teaching kids anything nor is it teaching parents anything as well....as a parent myself, I ALWAYS avoided the coach OUT OF RESPECT to allow them to "coach" only to see parents who talked to the coach and parents with "connections" have their kids trotted all the time while LOSING...sadly, most of these "coaches" seem to think you had to kiss up to them as a sign of respect rather than actually respecting them and their judgement in putting together a competent team based on actual performance......it seemed the only performance being measure was how well you could suck up to these "coaches"...simply disgusting.....and it was even that way in D3 college sports as well.....whatever happened to a Coach that would only engage parents if there was a problem....you know, like, hey, your kid keeps showing up late and doesn't have her contact lenses or shoes.....the only reasons I ever spoke to a coach was to tell them that my kid was sick or might have to miss a practice due to a conflict.....I never spoke to them about playing time or position or anything like that, and these "coaches" would view this as indifference and abuse it....and my kid was ALWAYS well prepared and well trained and ready.....so, its NOT all about the parents at times.....these coaches most times simply don't know how to handle the parents or they are being told what to do and who to play by their athletic director or others.....

You simply have to know how to handle Parents....not sure why this is so hard for so many coaches out there......if their kid is not that good then they need to improve rather than sit another kid who is more gifted or works harder.....and age shouldn't be a determining factor....potential should be.....and there should be certain objective mearsurable standards in which the players understand why decisions are being made....once that is establish ALL the nonsense goes away unless you have political interference due to School Board or Teachers or Athletic Directors telling you who you have to play......and at some point, rather than players who are good quitting, the ones that aren't good quit.....because, well, they don't work at it and expect things to be given to them because their moronic parents somehow think their kid should be in the limelight while the team loses game after game....LOL!

I looked up the stats and you are correct. Still makes a great story. Too bad about his temper, he may have been the 2nd or 3rd greatest of all time, John Wooden being first. Maybe Coach K gets 2nd. He learned how to Coach working as an assistant under Knight at IU.
