Heard you say "Thank the Lord" twice. You know where your blessings come from, and that makes me happy to hear. He is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, brother. He guides our steps and trains our hands for his work. I knew there was a reason I liked you.

I love stories like this. I left Billings Montana with $160 in my pocket. I went to work on the road for Columbia Helicopters and my first job site was in Reedsport, Oregon. A logging job, I spent most of my money on gasoline just to get there. Work days were 14 to 16 hours. The rent for the room was $70 a week. Thank goodness I brought a cooler full of canned goods from my Mother. I only remember buying a couple loaves of bread and some lunch meat. The pay was only slightly better than what I’d left at “home” in Montana. I’ve never looked back. I’m also not a welder, I’m an aircraft mechanic but to anyone looking to make a living, you have to jump at the opportunity. Just go for it and get your experience. Now that I’ve worked in my industry for 14+ years, I would give this advice to anyone.

I started of as welders helper with a welder who was a buddy of mines fried we were at a fab shop stayed there for about 6 months then went off to both of our first pipeline jobs once he passed his test and we went out to the job site and then we got thrown into being bead hands oh man let me tell you I was trying my hardest to make sure my grinding was perfect so My welder or the welder coming up behind us wouldn’t blow Through honestly it was kinda nerve wrecking and scary becuase I didn’t want cuase a problem for anyone lol but in the end it all ended up going good learnt a lot and now I am putting myself through welding school and practicing everyday hoping to become the best welder I can be in the future 🙏🏻

I agree with you about the lack of sunshine in PA. I’m from Texas, but I lived in Lancaster, PA for 18 months. I couldn’t stand that it was always cloudy. I’m used to summer being cloudless skies and 100 degrees for 3 months straight. I’m pretty sure I got seasonal affective disorder in the winter. That’s when you get down because your body doesn’t get enough sunlight

My first pipeline job was last year this time at a compressor station. I’m from the south Texas and job was in Oklahoma. I was in a fab shop and I ran into a women who’s husband was pipeline up there. I got 20 different phone numbers before someone said yes. With my last check of 600$ I drove up and was broke in a few days and had to manage till payday. I was a helper and I swear. You look just like my first welder. I got my ass handed to me everyday at work but I loved it. I was excited and scared at the same time. We got laid off in October towards the end of the job. I needed a job after that and didn’t wanna go home. I ended doing xray for Api and I finally came home to work on my pipeline rig. I’m currently working in pipe fab shop while still learning. I loved every second of the lifestyle.

Passed my tig test and working on my other certs. I can’t wait to get my rig finished and head back out and live the lifestyle again. I just wanted to be home for a bit and stay with the family.

I always wanted to try being in the oil trade thing. I thought all it was, was rig towers cause that’s all I saw I never saw pipelines. My buddy kept telling me all these nice things about the pipeline saying how badass it was and all that. I had previously worked in landscape so being out there as a labor hand was something completely different. I asked the guy like if we worked 2 weeks on and 1 week off he laughed and said “no this is not the rigs” so I felt stupid. We kicked off the job and I felt good cause I didn’t have to travel far. My first job was literally 20 minutes away. The first thing that caught my eyes were the welds. I thought they were freaking awesome I set myself a goal saying “I want to be a welder” fast forward a year I’m a helper now and hopefully will be breaking out! soon.

I started years ago with Brown&Roote as a pipe welder in refineries. Just about everything was high pressure pipe and we welded everything uphill. Red 6010 root and everything else was at least 70 Low Hydrogen. Couldn't have rods out of a rod box over 30 minutes. Still seems a lot easier to me. Never busted an X-ray. Done several hot tie ins. After a while I got a good steady state job with retirement and benefits and never welded in the industry again.

My first dream job was in Carlsbad, NM. I had receive a call from a home town buddy that was working on mainline in loving, NM to be his welder helper. I had been out of work for about 3 months at the time. I sold a pistol that I had purchased before I got laid off from my shop job. So I had $500 to my name and a truck the squeaked like crazy and wasn’t even legal to drive. So I packed up my closet and started my drive from Willis, TX to Carlsbad, NM. After the first day of doing safety classes and drug tests I was anxious to be working. My first day in as a welder helper we were doing fab. Probably my one of the best days of my life and the start of my journey on the pipeline. Been a welder helper ever since but unfortunately been laid off for quite a while now

First of my my dream job was for Rockford in Ohio in 2013, my bestfriend was a prior non union pipeline laborer only worked 2 jobs prior. Between us we had 2 grand and a credit card, we arrived in Columbus 3 days before our hire in, the next day I drove to Saginaw Michigan to buy my labor book for $800, stayed with my grandmother who lives in burton/flint that night came back the next day rested and hired in the day after both of us on the same crew on the back of a mooroka slinging sand bags 12-14 hrs a day 7 days a week for our first 3 months. After that job ended (Atex Express segment 2) I came home for 2 months a union 19 mile of 12" replacement job came to my home town and the rest is history. I'm now a boom/hoe hand out of iuoe local 465 and loving it.

Luckily my welder was super cool and willing to help so long as i stayed possitive and hustled (which I did). This being said, securing the first job was wildly stressful, drove from dallas (home) to odessa/midland, then to amarillo for a potential job that didnt pan out, then to oklahoma, then was getting ready to drive to colorado when i got a call about the helper job in new mexico which ened up working out. Only having a grand to my name and not knowing of motel weekly rates!. But I figured that out from my foreman after 3 days!. Being put on nights with just me and the foreman welding about 48” duck, at zero degree weather and I had to buy overalls at a nearby wal mart!. I was green but my welds spoke for itself!. Finished out that job and made friends with the foreman and got me onto more jobs with a Bigger up in my pay!!. From there it all took off!. I was the only Navajo on that job!. Was the most nerve wracking experience going in alone with nobody I knew!.

Hello my name is Zach White. I’m 19 years old and have been welding for four years. I recently just passed my 6G pipe test for my AWS sense certification but I’ve had a couple spots where I was nervous but they still held up. But during the whole test I was completely nervous and shaky. My question is, how do you stay so calm during a test

Im curious how much income you net when welding after you factor in the cost of a camper lot rental etc. i grew up in south Texas. My dad was a pipeliner for 40 yrs. he travelled some for work but never pipelined out of Texas. He was also a union pipefitter and i remember him working in Tennessee for a while after i was out of school. He also worked at the South Texas Nuclear Project when it was being built. He carpooled with several guys when he did that. He also

MNZ PERFORMANCE I am 24 Saturday. I want to work on pipeline one day as a welder. If I was in your position, I wouldn’t let the 2 layoffs discourage me. I would go find another company and tell them to give me a shot. I recommend the same.

@@arosswelding I too am curious. I'm on many different welding media pages and whenever someone wants to Break out or get contacts, there's always so many negetive people saying, "there's no work for you", " not worth it", " money isn't there" and so many other things. I'm a production welder and would love to try my hand at becoming a helper and eventually a welder as well. Also keep up the amazing videos. I've been following for several years.

If I am 40 years old and trying to do this. am I just too old and not waste my time? Where my experience and educations lies, the bottom has just fell out in my town. I would move but I have six kids, I am a widower and rely on family to help with them while I work. So I can't. I am basically starting from the ground up. I need a new way to provide for them that isn't 9 an hour a Wal-Mart. LOOKING FOR ANY ADVICE ON WHAT I SHOULD DO!

Thanks! Depends on the job, union helpers make anywhere from 22-38 bucks an hr and 61 bucks a day per diem. Union welders make anywhere from 40-54 bucks an hr on the arm, 18/hr on the truck, and 120.. a day I think... for per diem. No union helpers make any where from 15-20 bucks an hr and 100 a day perdiem on average. Check out this video for more info. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqrChZmJa69omKs

@rolltide2937
@rolltide2937 5 жыл бұрын
B Clapp I’ve been welding 25 years it’s totally up to you the road is great for a young man with no family but once you get a taste of road money it’s hard to go back to making pennies at home!!!! But if you can manage your money and marry a woman with a good paying job than staying home is a great idea weekends off and family time!!!!!! Word to the wise never marry a woman with no money of her own and no ambition to get her own you’ll still end up on the road because staying home want get the bills paid and you’ll be living check to check with a wife & kids !!!!!!
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 5 жыл бұрын
It seems like it limits your choices when you try to stay close home. But it kinda depends on where you live and what type of work you are wanting to do. Or willing to do. When you’re trying to stay in one area it seems as if you have to put up with less hrs a week or doing “busy” work. Which is fine but like I said just depends on your personal preference and what other kinds of income you have.
