I damn near did myself the other day. I was doing a 3g flux core and 6g TIG. I’ve done so much flux core, the guy was showing me welds n shit in the shop and I was like oh yeah no problem, I can make em look like that dead ass asleep. It was just 3/8 so I had a root in it (ran it a little colder than I wanted/expected to. Different machine and brand wire so I went on the safe and cold side) then I ran my normal settings 25/300, and got two little spots of undercut (maybe 1/16) but it looked like lack of fusion, the guy givin the test was like “just run another one up that side” I said fuck that imma grind her flat, re groove and not fuck it up this time, lol. Both weld tests (as well as the 1g stick tube visual) shot beautiful on X-ray. But it was still a humbling moment. None of us are perfect no matter what anyone says

Hi Austin, I'm in my 30's and decided to go back to my vocational school for welding. Got by the Oxy-fuel beads, butt joint, lap joint, and t joint finally and am now laying 6010 flat. At times I wonder if I'm too old to start over since I see some of the younger 17 year olds advancing faster than me and laying straight, even beads. But I get motivation and inspiration from youtube welders that show me that not all the instagram welders are perfect and we can still learn years down the road. Thanks for the videos. I'm not a pipeline welder, I mainly Sub arc and Fluxcore. I've worked with the same company for going on 14 years. A few years back I had a chance to get on with another company paying more. I tested out on something I've done many times, I ended up busting it. The QA guy told me it was close but he had no choice but to fail it. It does hurt the pride and takes a good person to admit it. Though I think it was one of those things where it was better that I did bust it. Because just a year later the Company had a massive layoff, a couple months after that I had a health issue where I was off work for several months. So in the end it was good that I didn't get that job. It has worked out much better since. You have a great attitude and that will work out for you much better in the end.
