I damn near did myself the other day. I was doing a 3g flux core and 6g TIG. I’ve done so much flux core, the guy was showing me welds n shit in the shop and I was like oh yeah no problem, I can make em look like that dead ass asleep. It was just 3/8 so I had a root in it (ran it a little colder than I wanted/expected to. Different machine and brand wire so I went on the safe and cold side) then I ran my normal settings 25/300, and got two little spots of undercut (maybe 1/16) but it looked like lack of fusion, the guy givin the test was like “just run another one up that side” I said fuck that imma grind her flat, re groove and not fuck it up this time, lol. Both weld tests (as well as the 1g stick tube visual) shot beautiful on X-ray. But it was still a humbling moment. None of us are perfect no matter what anyone says

Hi Austin, I'm in my 30's and decided to go back to my vocational school for welding. Got by the Oxy-fuel beads, butt joint, lap joint, and t joint finally and am now laying 6010 flat. At times I wonder if I'm too old to start over since I see some of the younger 17 year olds advancing faster than me and laying straight, even beads. But I get motivation and inspiration from youtube welders that show me that not all the instagram welders are perfect and we can still learn years down the road. Thanks for the videos. And yes, I just subscribed to your other channel.

I'm not a pipeline welder, I mainly Sub arc and Fluxcore. I've worked with the same company for going on 14 years. A few years back I had a chance to get on with another company paying more. I tested out on something I've done many times, I ended up busting it. The QA guy told me it was close but he had no choice but to fail it. It does hurt the pride and takes a good person to admit it. Though I think it was one of those things where it was better that I did bust it. Because just a year later the Company had a massive layoff, a couple months after that I had a health issue where I was off work for several months. So in the end it was good that I didn't get that job. It has worked out much better since. You have a great attitude and that will work out for you much better in the end.

You said it better than anyone could. Us guys who do it for a living know you’re gonna bust one eventually. Best thing to do is take it as a learning experience and make yourself better. You’re right about the undercut though. Soaking it in on a bellhole it’ll look good but on a 45 it will undercut the top edge on the top half of the pipe every time. I busted one for the same thing.

I failed my first UT when I was learning about 100% weld processes. Since then, I've never failed a single weld test or UT/X-ray. There's only one way to fail them and it's getting in a rush and skipping a step. Never ever skip a step and be deliberate in your decisions and actions. You didn't get a ticket because you didn't mean to run that red light. You got a ticket because you didn't mean not to run that red light. If you can feather a fill pass to make the cap lay better, do it. If you can drop the voltage a little to allow you to go slower, do it. The "I'll just go a little faster" thing is basically doing a Christmas tree on your graduation exam. A hiccup will cause undercut. Faster movement will allow for a bigger chance of a slip or stutter in speed. You gotta mean not to do that. When I developed that mindset and knew what caused all the possibilities of a failed test, I made damn sure that those couldn't happen before each arc. May sound odd but it will keep you focused every time that hood comes down. You don't worry about those things causing you to fail, you create an environment that it can not happen. No slip, no uneven passes to cause trouble later in the test, no odd fit ups or jagged landings. Everything you could overlook has to become what stays in the front of your mind.

Definitely love the way you think, it can only make you better, we all make mistakes and we learn from them, or most people learn from them. I know a few people that don't😄 but anyways way to go, just keep this thriving as you are now today. Love watching older videos

You know how I know that you arent a real welder? Because I know a real welder and he says that you have to show up at the job with a bad attitude and then it needs to get worse. Lol. Love your videos and your attitude brother.

You learn more form busting then passing! I just blew a BIG OL hole on a Bell because I didn’t check my OCVs on new welder. Little things like that Now I check it every day I fire up. You learn and you move on. I’ll see you on the road brother

Hey Austin about that blow out you had I highly highly recommend buying some sailun trailer tires s637. These tires are a beast especially for pulling a lot of weight on 5th wheels. I bought 6 of them for my 5th wheel and were worth every dollar. And another thing I love the industrial tradition cap I bought from yall. Keep up the good work brotha. God bless

I love welding! Still do,i am 60 this year! But testing out is stressful!!! I love the challenge to weld 100% Dipping a test sucks!! Feel for you brother! I was doing a test 30 years ago,for offshore.6" shed 80i was going in hot filling up,and it fell out on me,too hot!! i had 5 people outside my bay and panicked, ground out a bit and dropped my amps a bit and carried on,they said on my xray i had a lugworm in my weld!Haha Didnt feel that funny at the time, believe me! But got my second chance, was calmer and passed!Phew!!! the difference between work and good money is stressful! Believe me! Mind yer eyes and tight arc boys!!

I'm taking a test tomorrow morning, not gonna lie, I'm not nervous but more like anxious to start already. I've been welding for almost 20 years but nevertheless that anxiousness will never go away. We all busted a test in our welding lifetime and like you said it hurts your pride so damn much but we gotta pick up ourselves, learn from what we did wrong and keep on going.

Positive mindset is everything.. I like how you explained how a bust can be a good thing. Instead of looking down, feeling sorry for yourself you learn from it. Im no pipeline welder, but watch your video’s for the positive vibes and education. Its the lifestyle I wanted before I had kids. I still have moments where I would pack up everything and move into a fifth wheel but the wife said helllll no. Lol

I have started watching your channel and I like that you share your point of view for the industry. You have helped me learn somethings and think of some things that I would have never thought about untill I was in that position. I am starting welding school in a few weeks and can't wait to give it a shot. Im pretty sure my fierst weld will look like crap but it will be ok. lol
