The lion uses the calf to practise the skills it needs for its own survival, like a cat will play with a mouse it has captured. Did you ever play 'hide and seek' as a child? I agree that the lion was using the baby as bait. One other thing I notice in these videos where lions "play" with baby prey is that the lions that do this are remarkably healthy and obviously well fed. They have the luxury of using these babies as bait. Some of the lions we see in videos with their rib cages showing would immediately settle for this small snack.
