The debate between A.R. Rahman and R.D. Burman (RD Burman) is often a passionate one, with both composers having made significant contributions to the Indian film music industry. It's challenging to definitively declare one as superior to the other, as they both have distinct styles and strengths. Here's a brief comparison: A.R. Rahman Fusion: Renowned for blending Western and Eastern musical elements, creating a unique sound that has gained global recognition. Technical Prowess: Known for his innovative use of technology and his ability to score music for a variety of genres, from classical to hip-hop. Global Appeal: His music has transcended regional boundaries and achieved international acclaim. R.D. Burman Bollywood Icon: Considered one of the most influential composers in Bollywood history. Melody: His music is often characterized by its catchy melodies and soulful tunes. Experimentation: He was known for experimenting with different genres and incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and pop into his compositions. Ultimately, the "superiority" of either composer is subjective and often depends on personal preference. Both Rahman and Burman have left an indelible mark on Indian film music and continue to inspire musicians and fans alike.

It's not possible to compare the two genius composers. Both were impactful and produced music for various feelings and emotions beautifully. While RD Burman sent his variety of tunes to every nook and corner of India, AR Rahman extended it on a global audience well beyond Indian fans to Grammy, Golden globe and Oscar levels. This is still an observation and not a comparison. Success is based on the reach on the mass the musicians have accomplished over time with their talent, imagination, hard work and blessings. Just enjoy them all as music lovers.

Great episode even though a major part is not about ARR. One of the rare times when I agree with your Moment of the Day 😊. It's very well known that ARR doesn't like to repeat himself and wants to do something new, but I wish once in a while he repeats himself so we get those 90's sound out of him. No dispute that his current music doesn't have the like it it had in 90's with Kehna Hi Kya, Muqabala, Chanda Re Chanda Re, Chandrelekha etc. PSI might be good but it's not Roja, Bombay, Taal etc. Good question but no ARR affiliate is going to answer it honestly. If the question is about impact, I sometimes think the reason his music doesn't have that impact is because he is doing too many things. Just see how many albums of his have been released this year. On top of that, all those concerts he is doing. So maybe his music doesn't get his attention as much as it once did.

True, its impossible to choose top 3 top 10 or ARR. today you say this is the one and tomorrow he gives a better one. And day after you will say something is better which was created 10 years back. Each track has its own purity and different . One cannot easily say. TO me "DIl se re" is one thing that I keep in top 1. Some time back I mentioned in comments of other episode. I listened "dil se re" more than lunches I had so far.

There are many reasons as to why ARR is successful- 01.Rahman revolutionized Indian film music. He brought a paradigm shift w.r.t the production of the music and is arguably, the greatest “producer” that Indian film music has ever seen. He also introduced new soundscapes through his music. 02.Rahman has never been the kind of person to stick with the norm. IMO, he was very smart to have not aped ilaiyaraaja and instead, carved a niche of his own. He must have intuitively figured out that if he were to copy Ilayaraaja , he would be in raja’s shadow and instead, brought in his own style into film music. He always emphasizes on being “unique” and having one’s own style. 03.Rahman is a very knowledgeable musician.Check out what Shankar Mahadevan has to say about Rahman on KZbin. Shankar Mahadevan claims that Rahman is the only music director who has equal knowledge in technology, melody, mixing and arrangements. 04.Rahman has not been afraid to innovate. He has always tried to re-invent himself and didn’t just stick to one template of music. 05.he has a well-etched marketing and p.r team too which also deserves credit for his success.

I’m a big fan of R.D. Burman. There is not a single day that I don’t listen to him. But when we respect someone, it doesn’t mean that we cannot bring out the negative point of him. It’s like all those religious babas in our country that we have to worship them blindly…. When he was composing songs like chingari or Musafir, he’s unparallel. But, about his experiments where it’s already established that he was actually a copycat with his most hit songs like Mehbooba from Sholay and others, why we cannot talk about that? Everyone is mixed up with good and bad. Srinivas Ji is talking about the song, tum Se Milke, what a melody, but we already know that was 100% copy from an abroad song.. all the videos with time stamps are available in the KZbin. .. Guys, we can love someone, but we don’t have to worship him like a God that he cannot have negative side. Please be honest and bring out the Good and bad both the sides of a person if you’re talking about… that makes them human…..

It is ridiculous to compare two artists from entirely two different generations, who would have got totally different exposure and traversed so many different experiences as part of their learning grounds (including having different kinds of access to technology and talent). Just because they both composed music in the same language (while being years apart), it doesn't mean they can be compared to label one as superior to other. There is no common scale at all.

@@anantha1201 there is no "getting stuck" in music. Ilayarajas How to name it is not music album. Its a composition like a Beethoven Symphony. These fools dont even know he is beyond these templated music works because some of his non-Movie compositions shows how far ahead of his time he was and IS. Infact his little recent Mayone track in a movie itself shows how IR is amazing. Inspite of ARR having all the money and technology he himself cannot match his initial hits. This shows being great doesnt have relation with better technology or "getting chance " in movies.

@@thiruvetti I partially agree to what you said. Technology is never a replacement to human genus and Rahman very well knew it. Despite being technically sound, he also made sure that technology didn't come in the way of his compositions. He, infact used it to enhance his melodies than spoil them. But of late, if u see he's become too mature in his music that technology is not making all the sound which made ppl think that he lost his nineties touch but that's not the case at all. See, IR came when he had to come and so did ARR! God knows whom to send when and what they can do best! Imagine if ARR and IR swap their timelines, both could have been disasters in music. For me, both are legendary and I adore their scores almost equally. They both have ahead of time thinking and musical genius.. So it's just a waste of time to debate on who's great! Any singer who sings 1 language which has 1 emotion which can be mastered over a period of time cannot be called great. So, Rafi saab, Lata Mangeshkar or Kishoreda is not greatest. They are exceptional in their language and emotion they carried. On the other hand, SPB, S Janaki, P Suseela, KJ Yesudas, PBS sang many languages with many emotions successfully. Even Shreya Ghosal or Sonu Nigam also have excellent track record in showing different emotions. They are far greater achievers than Kishore Kumar or Rafi. Thats the yardstick we have to consider and judge. Not by number of hit songs. If that is also the criteria, SPB will be on top. None can match his range, language hold, variety, number of songs sung by any singer, number of hits in all languages sung, name it anything.

Hahaha what a folish comparison..RD Burman is baap of all composers.. his songs are immortal & hummed by common people where as ar rahman songs are only limiting to urban people
@apnajamesbond2 ай бұрын
I'm sorry, you know very little about the context. The reference here is on how both of them experiment with genres.RD was a big name in the Hindi heart land, but very less heard in the rest of India. Yes there was no FM or social media then and Rahman had a similar stature in south, now grown into a pan India reach. But RD had the privilege of using western compositions in his songs, but with the internet and increased scrutiny, Rahman doesn't have that luxury. So given the circumstances Rahman has an edge over RD

Bogus to compare , both are two very different music directors .... Rahmans musical progressions are very south indian style , doesn't fit for Bollywood music .....Shankar Ahsan & Loy are following R D style , Jatin lalit , sometimes Pritam ...but not Rahman for sure ....Rahman is out of Bollywood
