In July I visited Isle of Arran Distillery (and their new sister distillery Lagg on the southern end of the island) and was really impressed with their line up. At the distillery they call it the Lochranza Distillery because it is near the Lochranza Castle ruins - a definite "must visit".

The only thing in their line-up that I just can't stand is their NAS entry level (Lochranza Reserve). The Arran 18 on the other hand.... pure magic in a bottle (at a decent price)

In today's episode: Weird morning light (The musical). Arran did something only Rex knows, and he is still a staunch defender against the evils of gum disease. Meetings suck. Daniel misses being a child with a happy meal. Barrels can overdo it, and we will be looking forward to Rex and Daniels specialty pancake breakfast show. Rex knows his whiskey. Praline aren't strictly nuts. However Rex and Daniel both might be nuts... tune in tomorrow, same whiskey channel, same whiskey time.

Still making my way through all the Vault videos in order. Just watched 246and a comment read was asking about food and whiskey pairings. While in Oban, wife and I had lunch at a little seafood shack where I had a smoked salmon sandwich. We went right from there over to Oban distillery where one of the available flight options was 4 peated whiskeys. I chose that one and for the remainder of the day I was in Smoke heaven. Burping became a joy.

Just uncorked Arran 10 last night. It's been a few years. Good stuff! Their Cask Strength 12 is fantastic stuff too! Cheers!

Arran is one of my favourites. Any Arran. ALL THE ARRAN!!! Also, once they start releasing peated malts from the new Lagg distillery...we're all going to be in for some tasty treats!! If you have a chance to go to the Isle of Arran, go to Lagg and buy their posted new make. Do it and be amazed! It makes the peat basically disappear from the Machrie Moor. A treat for the peat-heads!

I have the new bottle design and I have to say the new bottle design looks much better. But the whisky is the same. So it's not like with talisker 10

I have heard that an open bottle of whiskey is usually only good for one year or so. That being said what do you guys do with all the bottles you open? Suggestion invite the tribe over once a year for all you can drink "Mooch night." We can make a holiday out of it. It would have to be "BYOG" bring your own Glencarin.

Is the Bothy version for Ralfy?
@stevesk8r5 жыл бұрын
That's almost what it sounds like lol cause it's in the class of his "integrity malt" although I dont think they said there was an age statement
@donaldfschiff1229 Жыл бұрын
@@stevesk8r Nope. Ralfy doesn't review NAS whiskies, and his bothy is not the only bothy. OTOH it is possible that Arran's marketing people are playing on our subconscious associations. As Ralfy himself says, it's a business.

Has anyone had the Arran Master of Distilling James MacTaggart 10th Anniversary Edition? I saw it online at Binny's in Illinois, but I've never seen it in person. (I'm still trying to get the 10 in the whisky backwoods of North Carolina.)

Not sure it was the praline comment, Rubicon... Can get Arran in PA, but only the 10-year and for $50. Not sure it is worth that much, thoughts?
@grbadalamenti5 жыл бұрын
Not worth the 50$, a buy price tag would be anything below 35$

$50?? Grab it. It's ~$80 in OR. There are darn few whiskies in the $50 range worth buying.

On the issue of aroma/flavor expectations that Daniel mentions at 5:55 and following... he is absolutely correct. If I tell you I am pouring you a Pinot Noir but I pour you a Pinotage (a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault) your response will be negative because your brain was anticipating a certain range of aromas and flavors, similar to Pinotage but far less rustic and brambly. This is why we recognize bad substitutes for quality pizza, beer, music wine, whisky or anything else because they do not meet our expectations.

Hey guys, thanks for the review. I have made a whiskey experience in London, or lets say in the aftermath rather epiphany, a few days ago, that fits quite good to what you said about expectations. Disclaimer: In other forums, I may qualify as a dilettante by this post (edit says: rather essay, sorry), but I know you magnificent bastards here are forgiving about that sacrilege. I collect whisky for about six or seven years, I like reading and whatching videos about it, of course have a dram here and there but not exessively, maybe 3-4 times a week. Today I own a imao quite nice collection of maybe 140 bottles (2/3 bourbon, 1/3 scotch and a few astronauts). Of course I wanted to discover all the crazy aromas and tastes you guys and others get out of the spirit. But even with the not sooo low experience i have, I often fail of getting what others get. I'm a smoker, thats the only part explanation I have. That may be the reason I'm a fan of kind of „extreme“ whiskeys. Scotchwise, I like for example the Taliskers, Lagavulins and my latest adventure favorite Ardbeg Uigeadail or real sherry hammers like Glendronachs and Genfarclas 105. And yes, I love high proofs, under 46 Abv. its watery by definition :) This is especially the case with bourbons, which I love maybe even more than single malts. My first Whiskey that I consciously bought - so not on the gas station to mix with coke - was Elijah Craig 12 years small batch (strong wood) in 2012. That made me courious and I explored many other fine „strong“ US stuff like all available Wild Turkeys - the Rare Breed being my all time value favorite -, all Blantons but the silver, my beloved Jacky Silver Select that is sadly gone forever and barrel strenght versions of many of the known brands. My heros for long, and still favorites, were the Bakers and Bookers from the Jim Beam small batch collection, I also like the Knob 9y old version. Then, in 2017, I found my whiskey mate until today. A bit expensive for my mid income - good ad hunting, my priciest bourbon till then was a blantons straight from the barrel for 63 Euros (Germany). It cost me 90 Euros (100 Dollars) and was the Stagg Junior, the little brother of that white elephant from the antique collection, that is at least 500 Euros in Germany (all of the BTAC). I opened the bottle on a nice Saturday evening, pored gentle and generous in my Glencairn. I smelled forever, fell in love instantly and got after the first sip „kicked in the nuts“ as Daniel would say. It seems, I may be a bit masochistic in terms of whiskey then, cause I just loved and love this kick. I still have 1/3 of this amazing bottle of liqor, cause I didnt know - I can be a bit stingy at times - wheter I would rebuy, as prices are even going up here. I'm rambling, back to the thing I wanted to say about my London trip. I was in a very nice bar called The Blues Kitchen, claiming at their wall to have the largest bourbon collection in the city, and that might be true, I dont know. They serve the George T Stagg for 9.6 pounds and the Eagle Rare 17 for 14 pounds for a 25 ml dram. Then I found out, they pour into a kind of tumbler, I asked wheter they had an alternative glas and ended up - a little bit dissapointed, but still impressed by the nice surrounding - with a kind of champagne glass. Lets nail it, it was not ideal, I feeled my long sought hero as good, ok, not 500 bucks bourbon and something was lacking. So, nerdy as I am, the next day, I strived to a 400+shops mall and tried to find a glencairn glass. Two hours, no luck. Then I found an alternative that is ok. To days later I was in a second location of the bar in Brixton, even nicer inside that the one in Camden I was before. I asked the guy serving, if it would be rude if I used my own glas for one or two drams, and he got it managed. I got the GTS where it belonged, in a proper glas I'm holding in my hand in a nice environment. And the enjoyment of the dram was worth many times the 10 bucks I spend on it. A woman from the bar stuff came over and asked: do you use your own glas? I say, yes, and she clapped my shoulder and said, good man. We talked a bit. I celebrated this small pour of stagg about 20 minutes and it was great, but still, something was missing. To come to the point after one page - sorry for being lenghty. Obviously, I was expecting the Stagg jr. punsh in the face or kick in the nuts as Daniel said in the review, as hard if not harder and still more refined. But what I was getting, was a beautiful bourbon that is far more gentle, nearly a gentleman, but maybe not ruff enough for my taste. However its a great bourbon. So my conclusion in the aftermath: I decided that the 100 bucks young gun is my man, not the 500 bucks creme de la creme top shelf superhero. And I discoverd that for just 10 bucks plus a tip for the guy serving. I had also the Eagle Rare 17 mentioned above, but that was a bad idea after the stagg, wrong order, I dont blame the spirit. Yesterday I ordered two bottles of Stagg jr in a british shop for nearly 200 Euro, in my eyes a lot of money, but worth it. I may already have found my perfect bourbon. Expectations as you say in the episode play an important role in how you feel a whiskey, I expected the even higher proof GTS to kick ass and he just gently clapped it. But it was great and many more high proof bourbons will have the opportunity to win my heart, I'll promise I try to judge them unbiasedly. :) Fun adventures are in front of us all. Man, this got longer than expected, have an exquisite day everybody and cheers to all magnificent bastards.

Damn see that's why I can't have a collection I drink like 2 sometimes 3 drams a day. So I always have like 10 bottles that I like. Sometimes more but on average 10 and always scotch. Of I drank less I have like 25- 30 bottles more in a year. Also why tip someone that does his job? That's not how it's done here in Belgium.
