Nowadays, i don't feel anymore old, I feel vintage.

Inspired by this video year I was able to remove the backs on the Sigma Cine PL primes mount and with a 50mm to 49mm then a 49 to 46mm adapter I was able to attach 46mm B+W and cheap vivatar diopters and was able to get these effects on the RED DMSC2 body with the wooden camera PL mount ( its very simple inside and necessary to fit all this, the RED PL mount wouldn't work) and adjusting the back focus of the lens I am able to get the focus marks to line up and reach. A recent addition was I took a cheap RF to PL adapter and modified it to have a 43mm filter thread in the back and can screw on 43mm diopters to get this effect. I am not able to back focus with this set up, but maybe a future RF to PL mount could be made with adjustable shims to correct this. By using the RF to PL mount this would allow any PL mount lens to get this effect.

do you know if removing that back portion voids the warranty at all? I have a set of sigma cines and I would love to make this modification

Lovely. Good info on the bokeh difference between positive and negative diopter. It would have been interesting to see how direct light affects the image, such as artifacts and lens flares.

Very informative video. Would love to see something similar but with split diopters...

I should point out that vintage lenses run a gamut of bokeh from donut (as pointed out in this video at 2:54), to soft-edged, to neutral. (Usually this corresponds to different levels of correction of spherical aberration - donut is overcorrected SA, soft-edged is undercorrected SA, and neutral is well corrected SA). It really depends on the design of the lens. I have lenses going back to the 19th century that exhibit any range of these. To call all vintage bokeh "donut" is a gross oversimplification.

The diopter that magnetized to the rear of the lens- is that special made by ARRI for the signature prime specifically, or can you take any run of the mill diopter and attach? If special made by ARRI, where / when can they be purchased?

Thank you for the video! Towards the end at 5:03, is it -3 or +3? Based on your explanation it looks like +3 diopter. Please correct if I'm wrong.

did you ever get your answer? cause right now I am on the hunt for a -3 diopter and its proving very difficult
@ARRIChannel3 ай бұрын
@@Ansonandco Hey there, it's a -3, the give away is that the focal length is increased slightly. A + diopter will give you a slightly wider field of view. These diopters were originally sourced from an optometrist.

@@ARRIChannel I appreciate the information, yeah I think I will have to get creative in finding a negative strength. Thanks again!

wondering what kind of diopter is? also proper size of this?

Love so much this information video, was so cool to see the differences, in my opinion everything should be shot in 8k and with the highest frame rate possible like the movie Gemini Man and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, I know that the movie standards are in 25fps, but that has to change, this subject of fps, if it only stays in opinions, nothing will go forward, I'm just a movie enthusiast, a viewer, that since saw those 2 movies, was blowned away by what is missing in the movie industry. That had to come 1 director to change my all perspective about watching movies. Like myself, one of those enthusiast of music, audiophile, there is lots of different music quality settings, but I only listen to my music in Flac Lossless, most of people don't care about it, because they don't know about what they are missing! That's the same case for the directors and creators who keep insisting in staying in those 24fps, they don't know what they are missing! Those two movies that I've mentioned they were shot in 120fps, 4k looks sharper than ever, no ghosting, no dragging, no choppiness, nothing, just, pure, focused, sharp 4k! OMG we have to push this forward! Thank you for the video!

I don't think I can disagree with you more.

above 30 fps u will get less motion blur which is not that realistic thats why directors stick to 24fps and about music I agree with u

Yep. Buy an expensive lens and then stick a glass bottle bottom on it. That’s art.
