Usually what happens with big cine companies, like the Cooke (lenses) youtube channel which is all about talking about the craft and why you choose gear, not ads. The products speak louder than marketing in that space, i guess.

@@AkhilsaiNo1 never once did he say they were the best. He talked about why they did what they did, why things are more expensive, and why they even changed lens mounts. A commercial would have just focused on why they are better than brand B, not the actual information on how exactly lenses work and what compromises were made in spite of having the funds to do it right.

Fun fact: The Nikon Z 24-70/f4 S mirrorless kit lens virtually has no focus breathing because it has a little zoom motor to automatically cancel it out, as do many of the new Z lenses.
@highks496
@highks496 4 жыл бұрын
@@infrasmog A lot of the cheaper and smaller lenses these days have electronic helpers. For example a Sony PXW-Z90 has a super-small lens for a relatively large 1" sensor, but it has a 12x optical zoom, 4K resolution, parfocality and no focus breathing. It's impossible to make a "real lens" like that in that small size and light weight. There is all kinds of electronic trickery going on in the camcorder to correct the lens errors, but also in the lens. For example it is not actually parfocal, but the focus is electronically corrected on the fly when you zoom. It's one of the reasons why in the past, a handheld camcorder was double the size and weight, only had a 10x optical zoom and a tiny 1/3" sensor. They just didn't have the computing power for the electronic trickery.

It means that this is the focal length they used. When an LF shooter uses a 35mm, they call it a 35mm. When an S35 shooter uses a 35mm they call it a 35mm (and the result looks similar to LF's 50mm). When a FF shooter uses a 35mm, they call it a 35mm. When an APSC shooter uses a 35mm, they call it a 35mm (and the result looks similar to FF's 52-56mm,) When an MFT shooter uses a 35mm, they call it a 35mm (and the result looks similar to FF's 70mm). The only exception is the world of tiny sensors (smaller than B4's 2/3"), such as CCTV and smartphones, where it often makes more sense to use equivalents as opposed to their sub-10mm real focal lengths.
@memcrew1
@memcrew1 4 жыл бұрын
bananaboy1100 when they say they used a lens at a certain focal length, that means they literally used that focal length. Nobody is converting focal length based on sensor size. Remember cinema cameras are S35, it’s only recent history that we are seeing FF sensors on these sets, and even in that case nobody is giving you an equivalent, it’s the focal length they actually used.
@highks496
@highks496 4 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisParayno Nobody uses "equivalent" focal lengths except manufacturers of consumer cameras. Because there is no "equivalent" focal length. There is an equivalent angle of view, but the characteristics of a certain focal length always stay the same, there are no "equivalents" for it. You are getting a different angle of view on different sensor sizes, that's the only difference. But for example a 6mm focal length, that has roughly the same angle of view on a 2/3" as a 24mm lens on FF, still is not equivalent at all to a 24mm lens. It has a totally different look and a much larger depth of field than the 24mm. This is one of the main reasons why cameras with bigger sensors have a totally different look from small sensor cameras: because you are using much higher focal lengths (for every angle of view) on the large sensor camera.

Arri is a German Company. In Germany, you don't talk about the competition and even more, you don't talk bad about other companies. It's seen as bad style. I think it's kind of impossible to get him to say anything bad about a specific lens from any other company.

@@JeremiahBostwick Yup, this IS confusing. "Auttoh-fokasu" literally means "out-of-focus", and refers to (like "bokeh") the quality of the out-of-focus area of the image. "Auto-focus" is "ohtoh-fokasu".
@JeremiahBostwick
@JeremiahBostwick 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeromechiu Part of the confusion is that I have no idea what romanization system you're using: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Japanese With the exception of ha hi hu/fu he ho, there are no "h"s and for whatever reason you've added a bunch of them in there. Perhaps I'm too used to Hepburn, which is the only standard I've ever seen or used for 30 years. A-uto- abu- fokasu would make sense for "out of focus", but I've personally never seen anyone use it. === Japanese people in general work a lot on vocab, so they always have an interest in adding more English vocab to whatever they're talking about. Sadly, this focus leaves most unable to put together anything past a basic sentence in English. This is neither here nor there though. Perhaps I say this to say it wouldn't surprise me if they started saying "out of focus", but it doesn't serve them well.

It’s so funny! They’ve finally made a 4.5K cam for Netflix and the first thing they do is introduce a lens set that doesn’t over sharpen the mid tones. And for good reason. The original Alexa has about the same resolution as film (not taking about Ks here, resolution is not about Ks idiot) so that means that in a medium close up individual eyebrow leashes will not be very defined and don’t individuality pop out at the view. That doesn’t mean the image isn’t sharp it is, it just means that it’s not unnatural like a real 4K or higher image with a Sigma Art lens on it. It’s like the human eye. We don’t really notice I individual eyebrow leashes on a distance of three feet or more unless we focus on them which we never do. Having them sharply defined is actually a distraction for the audience. That’s why the Signature Primes are build in a way that doesn’t over sharpen the face details. They’re still there with the Signature Primes btw, they’re just not as contrasty.

Cinema lenses are basically compensation, like 99% of everyone who watches cinema, could really care less about what equipment was used, there been multiple movies shot on junk DSLR bought on used market, and people just could not tell the difference when they swap scenes from shooting on Panavision to a Canon 500D running Magic Lantern, I mean Hollywood movies are king of using all sorts of camera and mixing and matching, at the end of the day, what makes a movie special is the composition and the story it tells.
