Abbott and Costello were a WW2-era comedy duo. They have nothing to do with aliens, but the alien's names would probably be unspeakable for humans so it was easier to call them those names. Abbott and Costello have a legendary comedic act called "Who's On First" in which both of the characters are talking about the same thing but do not understand each other, which is effectively what Arrival is all about. As an extra note, for a long time I always wondered why the heptapods didn't simply learn human language since they were so advanced, but then I realized the entire purpose for them making contact was so humans could evolve by learning the heptapodss language.

"Who's On First" got remade with quotes from George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice as the two talking. They were talking about the "new leader in china" which happened to be "Hu". They changed the word plays with Jassir (Arafat), Kofi (Annan) and used "rice" as well. Not as convoluted as the original but also well done. Here I found a version of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooO2aIaomal7atE Bad quality and as I said, not as well done as the original, but still kinda funny :)

@Rickhorse1 it shouldn't have to do with age, its just basic logic, even my own 12 year old son put it together instantly lol. He saw the bird was open to the air and still tweeting, so he said it had to be safe for humans if the bird was still fine. He'd never even heard of the canary in a coal mine before, he just used his brain to make a basic logical conclusion lol. Reactors sadly aren't good at doing that

I don't think General Shang is at the same level as Dr. Banks. In his words: "I do not claim to know how your brain works, but I believe it is important that you see that." - he definitely does not know the language, he says he does not understand how her brain works and is fascinated by her abilities. He knows that she can see things through time and by the time they meet it has been 18 months. He knows the only way she would have know the words would be if he told her so he does.

Yes, Chang did not know the language. He literally says he does Not understand how her mind works, but he Believes it was important to show Louise his number. If he knew the language he would have known "everything" else, that's kind of the point. In the film, only Louise is shown knowing the language, although the glimpses into the future with her book "The Universal Language" doesn't reveal if and how many others have learned the language since.

I've got to watch this reaction to see how they came to that weird logic.
@NightSkyJeff
@NightSkyJeff 4 ай бұрын
To clarify: Louise cannot *see* the past or the future. Since her interaction with the heptapods, she lives time non-chronologically. If she was merely seeing the future, she wouldn't have acted so oddly with the General in the future. Instead, she was suddenly experiencing that point in time, without any context. That's why she said (in the "future"), "General, I don't know your private number." If she was merely *seeing* the future, she would have been seeing herself meet the General at a time when she already knew his number, since she had called him before she met him.

@RushfanDave

This is so important to understanding everything about this movie. There is no past, present or future. Everything happens at once. No cause and effect. Can't be changed. Can only be accepted. Louise says even knowing the future and where it leads, she embraces it. That's all she can do, since her whole life is happening all at once. She can't make any different choices.
@peaceisnature
@peaceisnature 3 ай бұрын
I'm confused. So in the future she will meet the general... But why would she say I don't know your private number in the future when she knows it in the past. Wouldn't her knowing the number in the past make that future event redundant? And surely as everything is set, that future event will still happen? Am I making sense lol
@NightSkyJeff

It’s not that “in the future she will meet the general” but rather that Louise experienced the point in time when she meets the general BEFORE she experienced the point in time where she called him.

Also, I love foreign language and the philosophy of language and communication. I remember I had this moment in Spanish class in high school when I connected that Spanish was an entirely differently language. I said that out loud like a revelation and got a fair amount of teasing from it but what I had realized what that the Spanish wasn't just translated English, it represented an expression of thoughts formed by brains that existed in different contexts and cultures and conveyed different associations, connotations, thought processes, values (aesthetic and ethical) and ideas. And that blew my mind. Arrival is the only film I've ever seen to try to take that complexity of language and communication and try to present it for discussion to the masses. I remember watching it with my sister and seeing her think about language and communication more critically and philosophically for the first time and it was really cool for me. haha

About them birds and shiz: "The classic example is the "canary in the coal mine". The idea of placing a warm-blooded animal in a mine to detect carbon monoxide was first proposed by John Scott Haldane in 1895,[2] and canaries were used as early as 1896.[3][4][5][6] Countries such as Britain, the United States, and Canada used canaries as a sentinel species.[7] Well into the 20th century, coal miners brought canaries into coal mines as an early-warning signal for toxic gases, primarily carbon monoxide.[8] The birds, being more sensitive, would become sick before the miners, who would then have a chance to escape or put on protective respirators. In some cases, the canaries were kept in cages with dedicated oxygen tanks so the birds could survive after their illness provided a warning.[9] "Canary in the coal mine" is now used as an idiom for a person or thing that warns people of danger"

Oh I see why he came to that logic. Interesting. Pretty close. But the script reads it as she is the first to fully understand the language because she helped develop and publish it for humans. Allowing her to live life all at once, not a day to day linear method. If she needs to know something from someone, and she meets them, she can ask them at any point in time and use that knowledge anywhere within her existence. The General didn't have that understanding. He even said it, "I do not claim to know how your mind works..." And that method bypasses the "ripple effect" seen in other time travel theories that are typically still stuck in linear time.

October Boy: you missed very key phrase: the Heptapod told Louise: "Louise sees future". The 'flashbacks' were really Louise's visions of the future. I quess way before your time, before atmosphere sensors, coal miners would take birds (canaries) into mines, the birds were very sensitive to depleted oxygen levels, if the bird died the miners would need to evacuate the mine. The Heptapods must have been terrified of the Sudanese military, that's why they left.😅

The title "ARRIVAL" not only means the aliens showing up, but. also their future child, Hannah, who played such an important role in communicating with the aliens. ALSO: I believe that Louise was exposed to the alien atmosphere... and then she passed down something to give her daughter that "rare disease." Louise having memories of actually meeting and caring for her daughter, embraces having her daughter... all aspects... good and bad, because of the depth of feeling and knowing to truly celebrate every moment with her. It's a truly epic, beautiful film. Some other films that truly measure up: "PLEASANTVILLE," "STRANGER THAN FICTION," "GRAVITY," and "CHILDREN OF MEN." I love you guys reaction! The premise of this movie is that in order to really understand a language you have to understand the culture and history behind the creation of the words. The other part is that as you begin to learn a language more, you start to dream in it. The heptopods see the passage of time in a non linear way and it basically says that their language reflects them and by learning it she has begun to view time non linearly. She isnt one of them or as long lived as they are so she cant see as far ahead into the future but she learned enough to start piecing the future together. The scene with the chinese general is that she is seeing a future conversation with him and he figured out that she can see forward in time so he told her what she needed to know in order to make the call in the past. Love you guys reactions and cant wait for the next one!

"A universe that is unknowable is no fit place for a thinking being. The ideal universe for us is one very much like the universe we inhabit. And I would guess that this is not really much of a coincidence." - Carl Sagan He who also inspired a famous quote in the movie "Contact," with Jodie Foster - The line from his daughter being tucked into bed goes - "Dad, do you think there's people on other planets?" So.. He smiles, starts walking away, lays his finger down on the light switch without flipping it, and responds. "I don't know, Sparks. But I guess I'd say if it is just us... seems like an awful waste of space." - David Morse I think these two quotes sum up the way I feel about life out there in infinity somewhere... I guess the way I see it is there's an infinite amount of possibility there is, but since infinite never starts and never begins, a lot like time towards the end of Arrival, there's also an infinite amount of possibility that there is not. Bare with me here.. The answer to, "Are we alone is the universe?" doesn't exist for us at our current point on our timeline... It's not a question that we can answer at this point in our only-ever-forward-moving march that is time as we know it. Well... time as we know it in the 3rd dimension... Just checking really quick, Have I given either of you guys a headache yet? ahahahaha I love this stuff. I love discussing it and I never judge others for their beliefs. I think it's always a great thing to talk about, even if the answer hasn't reached us yet here. I do believe. Very much. Personally, I find it impossible and unreasonable to assume we're the only ones that exist in an infinite space.

Back in the day miners would take birds down into the mines with them because their respiratory systems are so delicate. If the birds died they knew the air was unsafe, for example they had hit a pocket of harmful gas and they had to leave and definitely not set off any explosives. They took the bird in there to help determine if there was healthy oxygenated air for them to breathe before they took off their suits.

It wasn't until this reaction that I understood what the aliens said to the Russians. We've just been told that it's an urgent situation and all 12 locations might have to combine pieces of the puzzle, so we see the message through that lens, but when they say "There is no time. Many become one." this is actually the most direct description of the "weapon" they are offering - the realization that time is an illusion and that past, present and future are the same thing. It fits the themes of this movie about communication, that when the aliens come right out and tell us what they're offering, even the audience doesn't get it, even after several rewatches.

Mr. October 👏 👏 👍 you also seem to be a space travel nerd. I just love the concept of it, and space in general. And yes, I do believe extraterrestrials exist. I find that there is just so high probability for it. Trillions of galaxies in the known universe, trillions of stars in those galaxies. I would say there is at MINIMUM an average of AT LEAST TWO planets per star - doesn't mean every star has a planet. I'd wager that about half of the healthy, non-dying stars have an average of at least one planet within its habitable zone, and at least 1/3 of those are habitable terrestrial planets like Earth. And let's not forget about moons, are just as likely to be habitable. And it seems very unlikely that life would start on just ONE world.

The Hectapods came to earth to pass down their language to humanity. It allows the individuals mind to develop a different way of seeing time. The way I try to explain the concept of time(their language)in this movie goes like this, hope it makes sense 🤭. Imagine watching a Movie at the Theater vs On DVD at home. Humans are watching a Movie in the theater, Live , in real time . There's no rewind, Pause, Fast Forward, Nada, except for memories of what's already happened in the movie. No control over the movie ( aka perceiving time). The Hectapods way of seeing time (aka watching the DVD) allows them to rewind, pause, Fast Forward, all while simultaneously, still watching the DVD movie. She starts seeing flashes of future events as a result of learning the language, which results in the Confusion over the lil girl and unrecognized memories (flashes of her future) At the end of it All, I think it leaves the viewers asking that Age old question??? Is it better to have Loved & Lost , Than to Never Have Loved at All ?
@benjalucian1515
@benjalucian1515 2 ай бұрын
Mr. October, you got it. General Chang didn't understand the language, what is happening as you learn the heptapods' language, time is no longer linear - past, present and future is happening and can be perceived all at the same time. That's why she can go in the future and see that she created the unification and find out from the future how to make it happen in the present.

I think the big trick/switch is the flashbacks (backs?) to the kid. As you watch, you _assume_ you're seeing the memories as she is, since that's how movies generally work. But I think it makes that case that she _isn't_. You're seeing these moments with her daughter, but she isn't, right up until the moment in the ship when she asks who the child is. She has no idea what's going on, because it's the first time she's seen those visions. So it's tricking you by making you think she's seeing it when she isn't. It's sorta like musical soundtracks; it's a big part of your watching experience, but you know it isn't something the characters are hearing. Film nerds talk about it in terms of "diegetic vs non-diegetic". But even that plays out here; soundtracks "generally work" as an out-of-world thing added for you as the view. But here, the way the soundtrack works, you often have a very blurry line between the in-world sound the characters are hearing, and the "soundtrack" added for you. Which dovetails with the "flashbacks"; how and when you experience things and how and when the characters do, is intentionally very blurred in both cases. And it's setup so you can easily _assume_ the wrong thing, without noticing until the end.
@NightSkyJeff
@NightSkyJeff 4 ай бұрын
I disagree. The beginning of the movie excluded (because it is a prologue to the movie, spoken by Louise post-arrival), she doesn't have these flash-forwards until she has begun interacting with the heptapods. The flash-forwards are logically appropriate. There is a contextual link between the event in her present and the event in the flash-forward.
@emdeeeff
@emdeeeff 4 ай бұрын
@@NightSkyJeff We see them, yes. But she doesn't particularly react to them, and her express puzzlement when she sees it while in the ship supports that she would have if she were seeing the earlier ones. No proof of anything one way or the other of course, but it holds together as a consistent narrative.

One of the reasons I got caught up in the “linear time frame” at the beginning, when I first watched this movie, is because when we first see her in her classroom (apparently after we learned that she had a child and the child died), she appears to be in emotional pain. Sort of distant. Resigned. Like her life has less meaning, after having experienced that loss.

First of all I'm amazed how much of this you got on your FIRST viewing. I'm going to write what I think this movie was about, but this is after many viewings over a long time. That doesn't make my thoughts any more right, but let me know what you think of them. (btw, this is one of my favorite movies.) Louise is a linguist. That doesn't mean she studies languages to translate them, but she studies the THEORY of languages: why they are like they are, and what we can learn from the similarities and differences. Remember her statement to her students at the first lecture we saw was about studying Portuguese, and why it was so much different than the other Romance Languages. Ian talked about a linguistic theory he read about called the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. It's a real theory from nearly a hundred years ago, and the thought was that the language we speak, determines how we think. (It's been shown to not be true, but it's the basis of this film.) Remember that Louise ends up writing a book about the alien "universal" language, and subsequently teaching courses on it. So the foundation of the movie is that once you understand the alien language you begin to think like they do. And for them time is non-linear. For them tomorrow doesn't have to directly follow today. That's why when Louise asked the aliens, "Who is this child?" They responded with, "Louise sees future." [I think that's a key sentence that you missed on your first viewing.] A ton of stuff fell into place for me when I saw that. One of the clever things this type of time-travel alleviates is the problem with energy and entropy that manipulating time itself causes. For the aliens, and Louise, all that shifts happens inside our minds. It's just like us remembering our past doesn't cause any problems that the reversing of time for the entire universe would cause. It's just that the aliens, and Louise, can also do that with what you and I currently think of as not yet having happened. It would be like jumping chapters (forward or backward) on a DVD. Kurt Vonnegut wrote a book back in 1969 called The Slaughterhouse-Five. (Yes I'm old enough to remember it.) It also became a film I saw in college. The protagonist in the movie was "unstuck" in time. We got to see him jump to different parts of his life, eventually at will. He could re-live any part of his life. Louise was doing the same thing. All the scenes we saw with Hannah happened after the aliens left. That's why she said Hannah's story began the day the aliens departed. Once she found herself at the celebration banquet where she met General Xiang, she was able to take the knowledge he provided and then "time-shift" in her mind back to the closing of the US camp. She explained to him (in Mandarin) what the ability to understand the alien language (the weapon, or gift as she understood it) provided. And she proved it by telling him exactly what his wife's dying words were. We don't know when she died, but it obviously was before the aliens came to earth, and there's no other way that Louise would have known her words other than the fact that the General told her. And as you said, Louise knew what was, or is, going to happen to her daughter. She found the experience of loving her was worth the pain of losing her. Ian didn't see it that way. He couldn't live with the knowledge of how and when Hannah was going to die. That's why Hannah said, "He doesn't look at me the same way any more." Regarding the whole issue of determinism v. free will is another whole discussion, and one WAY beyond what I understand. I think I've heard other people talk of something called the "many-timeline" idea where each of our free will choices determines the branch of time that we follow, and that all choices are valid, and every choice exists and we merely choose the path we take. (btw, I'm not a proponent of this theory, but I think it would fit into this movie.) The aliens said that in 3000 years, they would need help from humanity. Without this kind of theory of time, I'm not sure how they would know the future that far out there unless them sharing their language with us launched humans on a path that eventually ended up with them needing our help. This is the only way I can imagine that free will and determinism can coexist. So anyway, I don't know if this provides you any clarity, or it just further muddies the water. Does it give you any new thoughts to consider?

Agreed. If only 1% of stars have just one planet suitable for life to emerge, that would mean about a billion habitable planets just in our galaxy. If 1% of those actually have life, and if only 1% of those evolve to some level of intelligence, that's 100 thousand intelligent species in our galaxy. And if only 1% of them have a society that advances enough to start thinking about space travel, and only 1% of those manage to survive without destroying themselves with war or pollution or whatever, that leaves 10 in our galaxy. Now maybe only 1% of such civilizations actually manage to travel to other planets or other star systems. That could easily mean we're the only ones in our galaxy. But there are at least 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe. IIRC, it was R. Buckminster Fuller who said that anything nature considers important, it does many, many, many times. Like a tree will drop hundreds or thousands of seeds in its life, and only a very small fraction of those will ever take root and grow into a new tree. And as Carl Sagan said in Contact, if we're alone in the universe, it seems like an awful waste of space.

@@PhilBagelsWhat is often not factored into the equation is the ridiculously minuscule amount of time that humans have even had the capacity to reach space, and barely a hairs width from earth (relative to the universe). Even if intelligent life has evolved to a point where it could even intercept the messages we’ve sent into space, they would have to coincidentally have reached that capability during our same sliver of the 14(?) billion years of the universe’s existence. Add to that, if they are any kind of Newtonian-solid life form, which is no guarantee, they would have had to evolved on a planet with very similar conditions to ours. If they evolved on a planet with half the earth’s mass or atmospheric pressure, just breaching the atmosphere could be instantly fatal. Conversely, if they were tolerant of our atmosphere and evolved on a planet with twice the mass of earth, they would be practically indestructible, with twice our bone density (if they have bones) and twice our muscle mass (if they have muscles). The size of the universe is perhaps not as big an obstacle as the age of the universe to discovering (or being discovered by) alien life, and even if we coexist with intelligent life it is highly unlikely that we could even tolerate their planet, or them ours. That being said, in an infinite universe infinite possibilities must exist, so there’s that, lol. I believe that there are many intelligent life forms out there, and we have almost zero possibility of ever interacting with them in any way whatsoever. That’s just the logical conclusion given the science we know.

I always got the impression that she did change the future. She decided not to tell Ian that Hannah was going to die so, in the future, he stays. Also, notice how the humans automatically assumed and kept assuming that the aliens meant them harm. And all of their reasoning were examples from history. They discovered, they waged wars, conquered and pillaged. Rinse and repeat. What they never seemed to consider was that all of these events and conclusions had one thing in common: human nature and greed. Not saying that aliens couldn't be invasive species but it's like the humans almost couldn't fathom any other way to be. We may not speak the same languages but war seems to be a universal language here.

Superman’s alien friends came down to play matchmaker to hook up Lois Lane and Hawkeye. Jokes aside, English is my second language. In the movie where the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis was discussed, it suggests that a language’s structure and vocabulary shape how its speakers perceive the world and conceptualize ideas. It proposes that our language influences our cognitive processes and worldview. I’ve experienced aspects of this theory myself, as English has become a significant part of my life, even affecting how I recall memories from the past, which may not have been initially in English. In the film “Arrival,” the hypothesis is taken quite literally. It suggests that once you understand the alien language, you gain the ability to see the future. This premise explores a central theme of the movie: if you knew the future, would you still choose to follow through with it? The protagonist, Louise Banks, grapples with this question when she learns about her daughter’s fate. Despite knowing what will happen, she ultimately decides not to alter the course of events, driven by her unwavering love for her child and the acceptance of the inevitability of death.

Pre-Dune Denis Villeneuve showing what he was capable of. Great movie, posing really difficult moral questions through an interesting formulation of the so-called Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. As for extraterrestrial life, there must be thousands of civilisations out there. Think about the vastness of the cosmos, with hundreds of billions of galaxies containing hundreds of billions of stars, most of which have at least one planet orbiting them... Life on Earth can be the proof itself: the universe doesn’t tend to do things just once. There’s a high statistical likelihood of intelligent life-forms having evolved elsewhere in the universe, but a very low probability that we’ll be able to communicate or interact with them. By the way, how can you find alien crafts interesting but not the beings who built them?
