CC: I saw the movie Arrival several months ago and lately came across Nietzsche's theory of the eternal return, but I never connected the two until I watched your video. Arrival was the most moving film I ever saw, probably because I was affected personally by the same kind of tragedy as the linguist in the film, the loss of a child: my 20-year old son Colin, who I loved as much as it's humanly possible for a father to love a son, was robbed and murdered 5 years ago. Those 20 years and 7 months of his existence were some of the happiest years of my life, and I would not give them up for anything, even if it meant reliving my life the same way again and again-including the unbearable pain of losing my son-just as Nietzsche said, and as Arrival so eloquently portrayed. Thank you for the excellent video and commentary. Amor fati!

Hey Mike. I can't even fathom the pain you experienced when you lost your son. As I read your story my thoughts turned to my daughter and how I take for granted the fragility of life and how important it is for me to cherish the moments I have with my loved ones. Thank you for sharing your story with me. You sound like a great man and father. I hope you are now, five years later, finding some peace my brother.

Arrival is one of my favorite films. My stomach dropped when I saw it mentioned in this video, because it's as if my understanding of the symbolism in the film and fascination with Nietzsche and amor fati both converged in a beautiful way. The EXACT same thing happened when I personally looked deeper into the film "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind," (which's central theme is amor fati as well, as far as I can discern). Both Arrival and Eternal Sunshine were in my top 5 films of all time, and I had seen them before having any significant knowledge about Nietzsche. I find that beautiful.

It's about having the courage to love - love of life being the root of self love and the basis of empathetic love - knowing life has costs and that its purpose and meaning serve no other end than in its living.

Thank you for this. When I first watched Arrival, it hit me like no film ever has before or since, in a way that I couldn't quite articulate. Then when I stumbled upon the concept of Amor Fati, everything clicked into place for me. Is there a better philosophy to live by than this? This video beautifully brought together these two things exactly as I hoped it would

You're welcome, I am happy you found the video useful. The idea of amor fati and eternal return have been powerful and transformative psycho-technologies for me as well. Thanks for watching 🙏

I loved this. Reminded me of a sermon by George MacDonald where he talks a great deal about suffering as the medium for growth. "He will shake heaven and earth, that only the unshakeable may remain, (verse 27): he is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29), that only that which cannot be consumed may stand forth eternal. It is the nature of God, so terribly pure that it destroys all that is not pure as fire, which demands like purity in our worship. He will have purity. It is not that the fire will burn us if we do not worship thus; but that the fire will burn us until we worship thus; yea, will go on burning within us after all that is foreign to it has yielded to its force, no longer with pain and consuming, but as the highest consciousness of life, the presence of God." - George MacDonald Thanks for making this video.

The (Netflix) series "Dark" is based on Friedrich Nietzsche's "Eternal Recurrence". It's an excellent series. I makes you think. I've watched it multiple times, because it's so deep. Since "Dark" is a generic title; here's more information: www.imdb.com/title/tt5753856/ It's a German production. I watched the English overdubbed audio version.

I definitely agree that Arrival is centered around the concept of Amor Fati but I don’t think it’s about the eternal recurrence of the same/eternal return

Fair enough, this stuff is highly subjective. This is just how I interpreted the film based off my readings and my lived experience but my opinion is just my opinion. I don’t claim to be an expert and it’s highly plausible I don’t fully understand what Nietzsche is saying.
