Arriving at Blackpool North 🚂

I made this video to give viewers a feel for arriving into Blackpool via North Station. We take a look at pubs, shops & restaurants in the immediate area of the station before heading to the promenade to take in the views across the Irish Sea.

Myself and late wife, Wendy used to do our Christmas shopping in Blackpool in late November and always stayed overnight. We went into the Counting House one dark night in the depths of winter. I opened the door and there was no one in! Not a soul, no music...nothing. Not even any staff visible behind the bar - they were probably in the back of the pub or something. It was weird, as we'd always been used to it being packed to the rafters! So we quickly crept out and went somewhere else. We called it the ghost pub after that! Spooky!

Great idea Stephen, gives people some orientation if arriving by train👍. The wee boy saying "bye bye Blackpool" got me as we always said the same when we left and we waved to the tower until it was out of sight😊 (still do it as an adult😂)

I still remember coming to Blackpool from the Midlands with my parents on the train when I was a nipper for the main holiday ( last week in July/First week in August ) in the late 60s. Can't remember what Train Station it was and may have been the Central. I still remember a flock of men offering to take your cases to the digs on a trolley/old pram for a shilling or two. We stayed most years at Green's B&B in Lowrey Terrance just of the Lytham Road. Halcyon days

My dad passed away last year and we had to go through his stuff, he had a big case full of old style photo slides and I managed to get hold of a projector to watch then, all the family and friends (literally of us been to Blackpool dozens of times) sat around watching them at New Year and just as you mention some showed these "porters" (1976) around Lonsdale Road, and some you could not even see the ground there was that many people especially on Lytham Road (1973), the good old days !!!

Nice walk around the North Station area in Blackpool. That Sainsburys does indeed remind me of a small regional airport. Plenty of hotels, pubs, bars and restaurants in the area Stephen.

A very welcome sight at the end of a roughly 6 to 8 hour journey up from Bournemouth😊The staff are also very helpful generally if you have a person in a wheelchair😊

it would be interesting for you to talk to local business owners and see what they think about the council and how business is in blackpool I lived in blackpool for 20 years and its a little strange to see you walking around the same places I did! Always come to Blackpool by train 😁 last year there was a suspicious package on the tracks when I was travelling home, station was evacuated so ended up getting a taxi to Preston then train from there home 🙄

Think that was what I got caught up in. Had to get a bus to Preston then a train home from there. Could have got to Scotland in less time than that 😂

Unfortunately before planning acts came in North Station was pulled down around 1970..it was a beautiful Victorian Station with outstanding metal work etc I remember climbing on the huge steam trains when the drivers were absent..also great for train spotting..those days when kids,played out in the streets for hours and were not glued to computer screens kids would carry luggage to hotels for incoming tourists for a small fee .

Hi Stephen forgot mention remember buses going in back old bus station coming out front going all directions my family got 761 from Liverpool run by rubble certainly all changed there at talbot gateway👍

I can remember back in the 1960's a photographer was roaming along the sea front with his camera taking pictures of people passing by and he had a shop and would print the film and if you felt inclined you would go to the shop and by the photo. When film cameras where popular and you had only 12 shots on one roll of film for some cameras and you would go to the chemist to buy a roll of film and then go back and you had to wait 24 hours for it to be developed and printed . How technology has changed .

Remember that too, he gave you a raffle ticket style number to collect/pay if you wanted too, later the same guy, I think he was Scottish ?, around 1977 he had big cardboard/plywood photo cut-out of the stars of the day, Starsky and Hutch, Elvis (who had just died 1977), Bee Gees etc and he had the same set up, I still have one with my wife next Elvis, clearly a cut out but back then it look amazing...Great memories, sad to see Blackpool in such a poor state today.

Sounds like a Smudge street photographer. They were called so because they often sold prints that were 'hot off the press' as it were. Quickly made in a darkroom.

Had a trip over 2nd Apr, stayed the night. Weather quite sunny, a bit nippy but fantastic views. Popped into Yates for a dram, great atmosphere - only 2hrs from West yorks, what's not to like!

@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool Look up Blackpool WW2 there are some interesting story's on line about Blackpool in WW2 by people who where there you will have to sift through the story's to find the one I mentioned. There are a few pill boxes still around from WW2. There is some where in Blackpool during WW1 trenches where dug for the service men to practice trench war fare and when the war ended they where filled in and became a public park. I think a lot of the B@B where used to house the service men. At Walton there was a airfield which I think had 20,000 American service personnel.

Stephen main trouble in the station is the staff can be so ignorant when trying to locate a seat for my elderly brother and sister staff wouldn't allow us to pass through barriers 2 hrs before our train was due too leave Blackpool, Also do you not think the tunnel leading from the town into the railway station is likely to be an area where teenagers will gather and cause lots of damage. Thanks for the update nice to see a clean modern bit of Blackpool keep up the good work and maybe some day we shall meet by the beautiful shore

Wow that as changed dramatically since I last got off a train there , it must be over 20 years ago , I’ll always remember seeing a pub across from the station called The Flying Handbag , how things change is frighteningly fast these days , but Blackpool deserves to be modernised , we always drive to Blackpool these days so I didn’t know this area had been developed..... 👍

Before I had a car I used to travel to Blackpool on the train from Wigan North Western Station I would to my bike there and go for a cycle round Blackpool, glad the new tramway extension has been put which will be so much easier to get down to the prom as taxis cost a bomb I believe

I loved this Vlog Stephen, very informative as always with awesome videography. Right at the end of this, when you pan round with "Bloom" in the background, I came here with my parents last August, when it was sizzling hot!! We went on the Heritage Trams, Fish & Chips Tour. Have you or any of your viewers been on the Heritage Trams yet?? Loved the views out to see, beautiful.
