Great discussion! And the part where Taimur said he felt marginalized is so true, growing up in a Pakistani family the one thing everyone dreams of is being a doctor or an engineer, anything outside that you're considered a failure. This is a very serious topic and I think it needs addressing further!

I'm Arab and I would say 80% of my family are Doctors, but neither my mother, father or family have ever pressured me to be a doctor. Ironically externally there seems to be an assumption that I will become a doctor (I'm not medically inclined by the way). It's to the point that me and my family were at mosque and an aunty came up to me, my mum and my sisters and starts asking about what we have applied to for uni. Neither me and my sister have applied for medicine and we tell her honestly what our choices are, and then the aunty says to my mum "But aren't they smart? Why wouldn't they pick medicine?" as if that has to be the default choice of everyone with good grades and a medical family. So it can be very pressuring. Even if you aren't pressured by your family, I find that there is a tacit expectation from teachers and acquaintances that arabs/asians/muslims in general will study medicine.

I feel like Taimur is hugely accomplished and would benefit a lot from understanding that from his own side. I sympathize with his struggles with being compared to physicians; a huge part of my social circle is physicians and though I chose to study dentistry for a multitude of reasons, it is by no means because medicine was somehow too difficult or unachievable. There is a certain idolatry with physicians, and though I agree that medicine is an incredibly difficult field, the fact that someone does something else doesn't mean we have to fall victims to our environment. That said I identify a lot with Ali as well, having interests in science, healthcare, design, and productivity. I think having a career that spans both something people need (healthcare) and want (self-development, online learning, etc.) is fascinating. It's been great following your journey, Ali. And I checked out Causal; it's super polished and I can see it being exceptionally powerful, so I hope Taimur finds a lot of success in that.

Can 10000% relate to being the only non medic in Asian family and family friend gatherings. And totally agree about how growing up you’re constantly fed this narrative about how being a doctor is the ‘best thing ever’. I distinctly remember when I was around 17 and we went to a family friends house. And two of the ‘kids’ had both just started their first year in med school. I remember walking into the room and seeing them engrossed in this really intense conversation about...medicine stuff...clinical practice...patients etc. It’s kind of adorable thinking back to how passionate they were but also very eye rolling. These guys hadn’t even finished their first semester and they were already taking themselves so seriously. Even now in my mid to late twenties this happens any time we all meet again. It’s not necessarily devaluing but it’s a bit like...come on there’s much more to life. 🤦🏻♀️ I’m here for you Taimur, let’s start that support group!

Could relate to Taimur's most of the answers but the one hit home was the one being compared and not valued for other career choices if you have doctors, PHDs in your family. I was accepted for engineering and was asked to explain myself: ''why? , why not medicine?, Women engineer and if you pick medicine in future you can build a hospital ( I will help you)''. I loved science, maths, and computer but medicine was not my cup of tea at that time. Now I am an accountant so it has pushed me further down in gatherings and on top of it my sister being an engineer doesn't really help, lol.

Completelyyy agree with Taimur on the Medicine rant - I feel like people see me as the ‘failure kid’ purely because I didn’t do medicine. It has nothing to do with not being able to get in - I was great at sciences and had the grades to get into a really good university for medicine - I just DIDN’T WANT TO 😂 I also give a vague response about what I’m doing, knowing full well the person’s stopped listening after realising I don’t do med hahah

Oh my... two brothers one who did maths at Oxford and another who’s a med student at Cambridge. Your parents must be so proud !!
