The subway represents his subconscious repeatedly following the same path even though he knows it will lead to disaster. This clearly represents self-destructive behaviour like addiction or staying in a loveless relationship. The dreamlike repetition is clearly an allusion to Sigmund Freud and the mugger represents the Scottish friends we make along the way.
