Yes, TR Tony and Trumpet Pilot Bob (James) know that there are more than likely many different ways in which you can remove and replace a Triumph Stag Hard Top, however a few people have been asking how you actually do it. So, rising to the challenge, the Guys decide to show you how it's done on UES 591S.
Now, no doubt there are many ways that this can be done, so in anticipation of comments coming in, it will be good to hear how others do this too, so we can share best practice world wide!!

After this performance, I can see Hollywood producers will be on their phones wanting to sign James up as the next Bond. 😃

Hiya - every time we take it off or replace it we all say how the hell anyone could do this on their own (and without damaging/scratching anything either) is a miracle!! They weigh an absolute ton and hats off to anyone that is able to do it single handedly!! I had a chap write in a year ago saying that when he was young, he discovered the tortoise shell manoeuvre worked best for him. Basically, he got underneath it and lifted the whole roof up on his back, before waddling towards the car and dropping his knees to settle the roof in the correct position on the body tub! 'Appy Days indeed!! Best TR T

Tip: It's easier if you have both front doors open (in my opinion) as you can get your whole arm under the front which reduces the risk of fingers slipping out the person on the other side pulling it away from you. Mine's off again now, having spent some time over summer building "the shed" for it and some other stuff. Glad actually, as it means the soft top is up again and will slowly stretch a bit back into fit, otherwise if it has been stowed for a long time, it can be difficult to get back up.

I’ve always removed the rear locking pin on stag hardtops as it’s not really needed as the four handles hold it secure and it’s prone to scratching the boot when removing the hardtop and also damages the locating hole on the tonneau cover. Another tip is to remove the two bolts holding the rear seat back and velcro it in place as it’s a tight fit. If the rear tonneau cover cables snap on the locking plate it makes it easier to access it to release the hood and access the tonneau area to fit a new cable. (I’ve had the cable snap on many stags I’ve opened)

When I owned a stag back in the 70s I use to fit a rubber "t" shaped section in between the roof & top part of the windscreen frame as a added weather protection strip I got the strips off an old Ford Cortina car that they also used as such under the bonnet.

I am thinking about buying a stag from 72. Should I buy it? Would you recommend it? Imagine this question is from a very good friend...;-)

As ever, it's what the car is like of course, but yes I would recommend a Stag from 1972 (or any other year of course!) Check out the survival rate here www.stag.org.uk/the-car/ And join us on a weekend for more insights www.arrythestag.com/saturday-sockets All the best TR T
