I think it depends on how Arteta wants to use Havertz and Trossard going forward, not to mention what happens with Smith-Rowe, Vieira, and Partety. If Smith-Rowe and Vieria both leave its possible Arteta uses Trossard and Havertz to fill any midfield gaps against teams that play a low block, then he can use funds on a player that can play across the front. If Partey also leaves then I think he's forced to find a natural 6 for depth.

Hi Charles, Any idea how much Fulham offered for ESR? I would really love Olmo at Arsenal to complement Odegard, he is an excellent opportunity in the market, you don't get such a player easily, he is creative and would reduce the creative load for Odegard and is as well a good scorer, he is the perfect age and can play multiple positions, he really ticks all the boxes, people often forget how important Odegard is in our style of play we don't have any AM with his qualities if he misses game, I find Olmo an opportunity we must take if we get decent money from the sale of the like of SR. Glad Charles remembers Tavares too. Rightly or wrongly , he kept KT out of the team for 10-12 games a couple of seasons ago. Sure he made mistakes but he looked very good on the left but I don’t think he could invert (zinchenko role) But for a traditional left back I think he’s got great qualities.

Charles, i think Merino is the closest we can come to that perfect left 8, he can score, arrive in the box, defend and has the arrogance to face any opponent. he has the best successful tackles in all 7 top leagues. This is the 3rd transfer window, we haven't replaced Grant Xhaka, that's how unique his profile was. i don't understand why we let Xhaka go in the first place, he is one player you keep at all costs. Arsenal will be making the same mistake by letting Partey go, Partey's profile is so rare in todays football, a DM who can give that killer pass that breaks lines so easily. Keep him, keep adding him the 1 year contracts like we are doing with J20. Would you keep Partey, J20 then add Merino since we have let Elneny go? Do you think Arteta is aiming at assembling a squad to compete on all fronts?

(.a partnership ready made $80- 100 mill worth it) .. so with Partey back in good fitness, J20 , Rice and Odegaarde that's our midfield sorted , ( for premier league, champions league and domestic cup games we are fully covered for injury /rotation) - with Califiori that's our defence sorted... then spend big on a forward ( striker or top class winger) and the tropihes will be ours... yes , it's that simple

Unfortunately, selling ESR represents a "pure profit" sale that helps to balance the books for FFP and PSR regulations. Selling Viera does not. I want to keep ESR but if he is to be sold, I am glad a £30million bid from Fulham was turned down. We need to change the culture of players leaving for free or cheap.

I love ESR but do we really expect the fees between him and someone like Conor Gallagher to be similar? Especially if you analyse their respective careers at Arsenal/Chelsea, on loan and with England. Honestly £50m for Smith Rowe is a lot. I was thinking about arsenal pushing for bruno guimares but seeing his high price, i think arsenal should go for adam wharton. That dude is a baller, plus crystal palace might be willing to accept around 50m for him. I believe the dude could play as a defensive midfielder and as an 8 like xhaka did. I respect merino, but if arsenal wants to win big trophies, they need to sign world class players or young players who have the strong potential to be world class. Calafiori, Wharton, and Gyokeres fits the bill. And arsenal should not think of selling partey. Jesus can play saka's wing so i don't see a need for buying someone to compete with saka when what you are looking for is already with you. Arsenal's biggest priority right now is a combative (dominant) midfielder that can play as a defensive midfielder and as an 8 (so that the fear of injury to rice or partey would be out of the way), and a strikers who just wants to destroy the net. #whartontoarsenal

Hey Charles. Read your articles on Saka,Ramsdale,Rice and Raya set to return late for pre-season. How will Arsenal prepare pre-season in USA without these players? Only notable first team goalie left if Karl Hein and he surely needs a loan move. Rice can be replaced with Jorginho or Partey but i think Saka's absence will be a huge blow in Arsenal's preparation. Saliba and Gabriel will also return late as they were in the knockout stage of the tournament. Does this mean potential youth call up during the pre-season game and tour? Surely Nwaneri,Lewis Skelly, Heaven and Setford may get some chances and maybe even Pationo? We all know he wants the move for his career but we lack some options in the squad at the moment.

he cant, hes not robust enough to play there for Arsenal. Arteta asks alot more running, stamina & distance from his MFs. When he moves into midfield from LB, hes great at breaking the lines from deep, that wouldnt be his job at 8 as he would be moved further forward. "yeah well he plays there for Ukraine" you may say. Looks like hes actually moved to LB now at Ukraine and International football is less demanding than PL football anyway. Do you really want Zinchenko trying to win duels against the likes of Rodri, Joelinton, Onana, Caicedo, Bruno G? They would blow him out of it. Hed be better as a 6 like Jorginho but theres already a Jorginho.

If we sign Merino to start alongside Rice and Odegaard in midfield, we would be left with Partey, Jorginho and Vieira (assuming ESR will be sold) - I think this would represent great midfield depth. Selling Partey would leave us light in terms of depth in the 6/8 position, so i definitely think we should keep him. Interested to see what Charles Watts thinks on this one.

Calafiori certainly has ability to be that midfielder role (as stated by ex serie A if i'm not mistaken) and he has great ability to go forward. I could see Timber also taking up that role with Calafiori being left back. Either option allowing Rice to go more forward.

So sad that Southgate has resigned. He has done really well and has built a fantastic base of players. My personal belief is that he has selected more widely than any national team manager that i can remember. The inclusion of two Palace players in this tournament was something that I am not used to. The Euros were difficult for us to win. We turned over cheaply too often. Our left wing was a bit of a challenge, Trippier not being a natural there. We lost by fine margins despite that challenge. I think it would be seriously unwise to miss out on Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri's talents. They need nurturing. I am not sure about Lewis Skelly as a six, but he looks like a decent full back. If we cut the number of passes available to him he has every chance of becoming England's left back solution by the next world cup. It is up to him to play as well as he can and put in the extra effort to do so. I would happily play Nwaneri for progressively improving periods any time we have a 2 goal buffer, in my opinion he needs to play at every sensible moment. Either resting Rice or shifting him to the six position.

if calafiori becomes official, he should be the starting left back for league and ucl, zinchenko should slide as backup in midfield, and timber-kiwior should cover our starting cb (gabriel-saliba) during league and ucl matches, and our starting center back in fa cup and carabao cup matches. with that, the club can keep kiwior in arsenal jersey and helps timber to settle down and ease those knees. and i hope edu and arteta finds a replacement for partey and squad players in midfield for esr, elneny, and lokonga. a proper cover for saka and a clinical striker. and they should also find replacement for nelson and nkteah. maybe promoting academy players will help boost the squad.

Release clauses for Dani Olmo and Nico Williams is under 100m combined. Looking at wages of 400k a week (unfortunately) for the two combined. But you won't get players of this calibre for so cheap so the wages can be a bit higher. Sell ESR and we recoup 40 in transfer fees alone and shed this wages. No trainer for me and we fill the CM hole as well as stiff competition for Martinelli and Saka.

Where are you hearing that??? To put it into context, even Man City have just 4 players making over 275k...and they may shed 2 of those. With PSR, I think it will be hard to offer crazy wages going forward. But all we can do is speculate. I would not pay over the 230k/240k for either...and 285k for Havertz was a mistake

We sold Andy Cole because he needed 3 chances to score a goal, We got Wright who needed 1 chance to score a goal. It's about improving the squad by continually signing the best players you can afford and we can afford the best, we don't need these average guys we need world class. Have Zubimendi and Merino helped Sociedad challenge for the title? How many players come close as a control focused CDM - let me know im generally curious who u think is available? We are currently using Jorginho - who played 1.5k mins last season, and is a complete liability due to his lack of speed. An upgrade is clearly needed. Regardless, Zubimendi is not as far off as you think, there is a reason Arteta and Barcelona love him so much.
