A straightforward solution to this issue would be implementing a new rule in international football. Under this rule, once a player commits to representing a particular national team, that decision should be binding for a minimum of 10 years. During this period, the player would be ineligible to switch and play for any other nation, ensuring consistency and loyalty to their chosen country. After all, international football is about representing your nation with pride, and countries shouldn't be treated like clubs where players can simply transfer based on personal convenience. So it’s bad for a player to swap allegiances after only 3 caps but it’s ok for a manager to ruin a players international career by giving him a cap, making him feel important and then dumping him on a scrap heap forever potentially. And he could be dumped for just a fall out for example. Rice is born in England. He’s English. Maybe other countries should stop calling up other nationalities and the they won’t have a problem. But they won’t, because they want the best they can. However it’s frowned upon for a player to want the best they can. Compete double standards imo. This is an opinion issue. If Rice & Grealish hadn't done what they did we could have played Lionel O'Messi and Cristiano McRonaldo more often. We had such talent waiting in the wings.

Seriously Andy? Once you play for a senior national side that should be it.

But football teams dont just buy players just because of their nationality or where their immediate family were born.

I was born in Liverpool but represented Ireland (albeit in Triathlon) I declared in my early 20's, I didn't want to represent GB not because I hate England, it was just I come from an Irish family. Obvs Rice didn't have the Irish (cultural) upbringing I had hence why he really felt nothing for the country, what was egregious though was his step stoning Ireland to get to an England call up, that is low and it isn't an age thing, it's a self serving thing, nothing to do with pride in one's country or wearing the shirt, a pure opportunistic move and quite shameful tbh.

Also, international football is about players representing THEIR nation. It allows people of Brazil to still enjoy players like Vini Jr, and feel a strong connection to him, despite him playing all the way in Spain. It's a big deal for people from smaller nations too. Youd lose all the beauty and meaning behind international tournaments. "England are the favorits for this years WC. With players like Erling Braut Haaland, İlkay Gündoğan, and Ederson Santana de Moraes now wearing the 3Lions shirt, surely they will go far!"

They've monkey branched to a better scenario where they have a chance to play in finals and possibly win a tournament. The one to question is Evan Ferguson: where is his ambition? He could have replaced Harry Kane already.

It should be simple, whichever country you are born in, you play for them. No loopholes, no long list relative

I'd go further with this. If you represent a country at any level, that should be the only nation you can represent. Look at Haaland, as an example. He could've played for England, but he chose the nation of his family. He's a brilliant Striker, truly World class, but he might go through his entire career without playing at a major tournament. Had he chosen England when he was a laddie, he'd have had a runners up medal in the Summer. These are the choices people make. You stick to them. Supposing you end up only representing your nation up to U18's.

Is this really a debate? If you could play for multiple countries, then it’s quickly becomes club football at the international level. Depending on the policies of a given country your grandparents could have 4+ different passports, meaning you could play for 8+ different teams - and these are conservative numbers. You have to draw the line somewhere and drawing it at one, is just common sense.

I didnt really have a problem with them other than the fact they might have taking spots away at underage level, but on the other hand if the people who missed out are good enough they'll make it through eventually. And when they left they werent the players they are now, and personally i didnt think they'd make the England team, so fair play to them in a way

Players like Rice and Grealish basically used Ireland to guarantee international football experience. Then when interest came from England.....It clearly shows that they dont value or respect their Irish ancestry

You don't 'pick' your country. You are born in country A, and if youre good enough and picked, you play for that country. If you want to represent another country, then change your nationality and play for country B, only if you've never played for country A. A lot of footballers, like Rice, try to have their cake and eat it.
