Reaching a WorldCup knockout stage with Senegal or like quarter-finals like they achieved in 2002 (knocking out Vieira's team in the group stage) is probably as good an achievement as being part of a strong squad with Zidane etc...who are hosting a WorldCup and winning it. And I know Zidane isn't actually French either but that's not the arguement.

Highbury pitch felt like a basketball court, small compact and end to end action.
@aabidamn4 жыл бұрын
Emirates looks big on TV, but if you're watching from the seat, the pitch doesn't look all that big. Yes, it had the minimum sized pitch allowed by FIFA. However, Highbury looked compact & small more because of the camera angle. I loved watching Arsenal at Highbury. The small distance between the pitch and supporters gave a unique and extra intimidating atmosphere.
@TheCardinal234 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah. A lot of it is the TV angle - that part is really bad. But it WAS quite small, so with the pace of the premier league and the closeness of the stands to the pitch, there's nowhere to hide...especially when the tackles start flying in as they used to.

In that period, 1997 to 2004, United very rarely outplayed us. It did happen (the 6-1 comes to mind) but mostly what we got was fouling, clogging and grabbing to counter the better football played by Arsenal. Unusually, in this match, punished by the referee. More typically, it proved effective.
@FootkerSnookball Жыл бұрын
Bullshit. ManUtd scored 80 PL goals that season to Arsenal's 59 "better football" 😆 and don't get me started on Europe which ManUtd won in invincible style and again by scoring the most goals, always strongly competed in CL in this era while Arsenal weren't jeopardising their domestic seasons by playing European football at all pretty much I.e 1997/98 Arsenal nicked the PL title because Winterburn fouled Scholes in the box at 2-2 no pen then Winterburn sets up Arsenal's late winner which was a crucial 6point swing that went towards Arsenal nicking the title by nothing margin (needed another narrow late win vs ManUtd's B-team later in the season) when ManUtd were better at attacking & defending scoring more & conceding less, Arsenal nicked it by having 1 more draw ManUtd's losses were more unlucky than Arsenal's and ManUtd had 12GD better so there was literally nothing suggesting Arsenal were better that season and Arsenal had bad disciplinary record....Arsenal like to pretend they were great when they were lucky to win something but when ManUtd win more convincingly they were apparently lucky 🤔 ManUtd won 3 PL's in a row from this match they almost won 6 in a row 1995/96 to 2000/01. And 2002/03 Thierry scored an offside brace to get a 2-2 draw both ManUtd goals legitimate and it was typically Arsenal the ones complaining somehow. ManUtd also beat Arsenal in this treble season in the FAcup basically 3 times because first game Keane scored legitimate goal bizarrely disallowed because the linesman thought Giggs passing to himself is offside 🤦♂️ In the replay ManUtd were 1-0 up great Beckham goal and cruising until flukey Bergkamp deflected shot and ManUtd had to beat them all over again in extra time, with 10 men....which they did with an iconic goal.
@Djsonley Жыл бұрын
As a United fan myself I agree. United were always better on the back foot anyways. Hence the 1999 treble beating Bayern in the final and Juve in the semi. Backs to the wall was when Fergie shined. Wenger played more dominant football.

You cannot compare a single current arsenal player to any of that team. Aubameyang would perhaps have been given a few starts over Anelka. But with the arrival of Thierry, not even he would get into the team. There is a reason that team were champions, in a much tougher and hostile Premiership than today - Whilst the current side can't even make top four.

The guy could not set up the team tactically to save his life in those last ten years from 08 through to 2018. The evidence is right there in front of you. Any coach worth their salt absolutely would not continuously do the same thing season after season against Barcelona and Bayern (which was “play football” in his own words) and expect a completely different outcome every time and just end up losing every time. HE DID. I know it’s hypothetical but if George Graham was in charge of the awful team with that crap defence and midfield he would have found a way to get past those two teams at least once each through drilling that team defensively because believe it or not defending is an essential part of the game, but not according to Wenger it wasn’t.

I remember those days, someone was always moving in and out of space in the middle to open up opportunities for a quick explosive counter attack with force by using the unmarked man who filled the middle space behind as a pivot. We would win games and dominate. Now our midfield is crowded and space is congested by two defensive midfielders across the back line and we always predictably attack up the wings. Then posses back to to the defensive line instead of pressing the goal. Then back up the wings to a dead end eventually losing possession. Now we're middle table and can barely manage a draw.

He inherited a very good defense and then forgot to keep refreshing it and didn't have quite the budget needed as they were paying down the Emirates and staying out of debt. @@tayeebhussain5014 Well, I can see how you might choose to look at it that way. I think it much more likely that Wenger understood that the team on the pitch was going to get less money while they built a new stadium to fund greater success in future years. He has said as much in some interviews. Now, we have to lean on the owner to not take the money and run, but actually put it back into the team and build a European dynasty like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and ManU. As for his press conferences, not everyone can be as forthright as Klopp. UE is so "diplomatic" at press conferences that I can no longer watch him. I think that Wenger was worn out in his last years and just didn't have the energy needed to keep the team in the top four and challenging for titles, but he wanted to see his project through and hopefully leave with some silverware. If Arsenal were better than ManUtd in 1998/99 then Jesus ManUtd were on another planet compared to Arsenal in 1997/98. Arsenal were FAR luckier that year! Even just talking about PL alone & forgetting the effect a European season can have on a team's title race. ManUtd were better in the PL both seasons and didn't rely on luck or Arsenal key injuries to win 98/99 where as Arsenal DID rely on luck & many key absences for ManUtd to nick 97/98. Both seasons ManUtd scored a lot more PL goals. Both seasons ManUtd had better GD. ManUtd were PL top scorers for 7 straight seasons 1995/96 to 2000/01.

He left almost 16-17 years ago and we still haven’t come close to replacing him. Gilberto Silva was probably the last person we had who could do some of what Vieira would do.

@@jb.300 wenger never ever wanted this kind of players anymore....replaced him with numbers of midgets in midfield....never worked...and the club let him go on like that for 12 mor years....sheer madness, incompetence high three.

People thik the game has become more technical. More like it has become more soft. People look at 90's early 2000s football as outdated. But these teams will rip through the preimire league today with players like this. Physical ability was through the roof

Chelsea had won the CWC and the League cup the previous season and the Supercup against CL winners RM this season while finishing 4 points behind United. They were not ordinary. Not as big as they are now, sure, but still a big club. Like from 96/97 to 99/00, they won 2 FA cups, a League cup, a CWC and a Supercup, winning a throphy every season during that period, while also consistently finishing in the top 5.
