The outcome of every action is determined by two primary factors: effort born of free will and adrishta phala from deeds performed before. Though either free will or past karma can be dominant, you are never helpless because you can always choose how to respond in any situation, being endowed with free will.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

Very good information and advice. Not mentioned here is the good karma that may bring one a true guru to help and guide one. A totally liberated guru can take on some of one’s karma. Caution is necessary here as there are a lot of fake so-called gurus whose only interest is in their own egos and on having compliant followers who leave their reason at the door. They are not liberated themselves and in no way can help with the easing of karma or in the guidance necessary to liberation. Vedanta teaching is good and true and one may be fortunate in finding the help of a true guru if one is striving to live a life in compliance with reality or the infinite God.

hi, I got to 12.26 where I got stuck, I am one who believes all action for the non-present person is ordained, it is only when they come into presence or mindfulness that they begin to have some command of their experience. I think it is the mind chatter(false self) that is responsible for keeping one off the path of awareness and right action. Until a person has the stillness of mind there is nothing one can do to prevent suffering. The belief one is in charge and has access to free will can be useful and very helpful, but the person is still coordinated by a conductor of the orchestra(karma). I believe, free will is an illusion that makes people put an effort in to support a sort of capitalism. There is an underlying madness or chaos that may never resolve without the presence of mind that comes with stillness. Through presence we unwrap ourselves from karma and begin to heal, we are no longer a mad player fighting as an individual against impossible forces.

Free will with expectation of a “certain” result can be illusory. However, free will with an understanding that the result may not be certain is real. All one can do is devise suitable strategies to overcome the effects of adrishta phala. However the results are not certain. The degree of success can vary. That doesn’t mean one should not exercise free will. The results are combination of adrishta phala and free will. That’s what swamiji is explaining here.

A bit confused here. I understood that karmic cause & effect is pure psycho-spiritual. The flow or current of a river is pure a cosmic-dharma phenomenon. Are you now saying encountering nature's force, rain or sunshine, is a force of our past karma? Or as I understood it a possibility to choose how to react to or act upon it that integrates with our existing karma??

Sir As you said , we can control our actions but not the adrishya phala. However how would we know how much to manoeuvre with respect to our actions. For that manoeuvring we need to know the strength of adrishya phala . How do we know how strong the current of Adrishya phala is so that we can act accordingly? Thank you

Let's look at a person who was an alcoholic in a past life.The trigger for this behavior will be presented at a fairly early age.Its the inner desire to break the addiction cycle that must bring an INTENSIFIED FREEWILL/ MANAS POWER into one's desires & actions=influences future karmas.
@indianmilitary
@indianmilitary 8 ай бұрын
That "trigger" is also pre-programmed by karma in the form of Tamasic guna. It also means, the ratio of 3 gunas are also pre-programmed by Karma for a particular outcome. So, the so-called human effort is also determined by karma. Taking your example eg An alcoholic can become a teetotaller only if his guna (Sathvik guna) is pre-programmed to be displayed at a particular point in time so that he or she can put an effort which can lead to that predetermined outcome. If an alcoholic was pre-programmed to die from cirrhosis then his tamasic guna would be pre-programmed to continue. It is the reason why there is a saying in Hindu scriptures 'Vinasha kala vibaritha buddhi" When the time is not right, people are pre-programmed to make mistakes due to their inability to think or analyze or control their manas" But there is also free will which cannot do much as far as what is pre-programmed in this life but it definitely can create thoughts and desires (based on experience of current life or life lessons) which can "fructify" in one's future lives. e.g. Two brothers growing in similar circumstances of poverty and in the end using their free will one of them desiring to become a millionaire in his next life and another desiring to be a sanyasi. This is free will. So, yes everything is pre-programmed but at the same time humans have free will to decide on what is going to be pre-programmed in future life. Karma works on the principle of delayed causation. So, there is nothing random in anything. Air molecules moving in a certain direction may be "random" to a human eye but it is also pre-programmed to move in a certain direction by the natural law or dharma.
@tr7b410
@tr7b410 8 ай бұрын
@indianmilitary Environment also factors into this complex equation. GOOGLE search NDE EXPERIENCER-Hindu Anethesiologist living in California dies from toxic shock. He was determined while getting his education to be a doctor to become a Sanyansi working in the Ramakrishna organization, but the head monk told him no,finish your education than talk to us. He finished,moved to California & was then, because of the degree of materialism around him, became greedy & a callous soul.INTERESTINGLY enough Arch Angel Micheal was in his NDE.Obviously Samskaras also influenced his decision. I also have a notion that the GUNA that Ramakrishna indicated that was a springboard to samadhi,the Satvic Guna, is the unconscious mind. I had an experience in 1992 in California after taking a kundalini awakening workshop from a Kundalini master from India who gave us Shakti pat,a mantra & said meditate upon the 3rd eye. I did as directed & 3 nights later in my evening meditation session I heard a loud tone/musical note fill my mind. I then saw a spiral open up between my eyebrows, which sucked me into this velvety darkness that was PEACE FILLED BEYOND COMPARE. Over the years of my meditation practice this peace has become more integrated into my mental health. This makes me believe that the unconscious minds disconnect from the ego with its SUBCONSCIOUS/Samskaras is what Ramakrishna spoke about when he said:A Satvic mind is closer to samadhi & the mark of spiritual progress. When the unconscious minds influence,over the subconscious minds karmic momentum is thus destroyed, one can enter nirvilkapa samadhi again & again=being BORN AGAIN/no karmas,one then attains LIBERATION.See consciousness of Ramana Maharshi Be as You Are Chapter 12 Experience and Samadhi.

I love your teachings, thank you. I disagree with something in here, though. We do NOT always have power over our actions. heavily traumatized persons sometimes do not have power over their actions. and many many people these days are quite traumatized. so for them, this teaching can be hurtful in this absolute form.
@AnnaDoraClaire
@AnnaDoraClaire 3 жыл бұрын
the feeling of helplessness can be triggered up due to trauma - and one cannot do anything about that in that moment. complex trauma can be very hard to heal. and lack of understanding in society for this makes it even harder to understand and heal self.

I just saw your video. How do you eliminate all of your karma? By what you said, the moment you experience the results of past karma you will create new karma by your reaction to it. It sounds like a vicious cycle of unending Karma! How are you supposed to receive liberation?
@indianmilitary
@indianmilitary 8 ай бұрын
Good question. That is where free will comes into play. eg Two brothers are going through similar situations and circumstances of poverty. In the end, using their free will one of them desires to be born in a rich family in his future birth and another desires to become a sanyasi. Point is that free will cannot change anything which is already - pre programmed in this life. It also means, everybody's guna is also pre-programmed on how to behave when faced with pre-programmed karma. eg If your preprogrammed guna is predominately Sathvik, you create less new karma or Agama karma. If your pre-programed guna is mainly tamasic then you create more karma. But there is also free will which can break this cycle. Sri krishna prescribed a shortcut to breaking the karmic/reincarnation cycle. If you keep your manas calm at the juncture of the birth/death duality cycle or at the time of passing, that state remains indefinitely. But one should exactly know the time of passing. It is the reason why gurus calculate their time of passing to be well prepared in advance.

What happens to you cannot be 100% determined by your 'karma' because you are not the only person in the universe. Your life interacts with the lives of everyone else so you get thrown new circumstances and events which enables you to act according to your beliefs. Your live has to fit in with the lives of other people. We can't become all winners of the lottery. If it was only your karma responsible for your life it would be a one way street. Once you are on the good track when the karma balance turns positive there will be no more resistance anymore and no challenges and everything will dip to positive, game over. Life is not about reaching that turning point and then everything will be OK. Life is a continuous series of challenges. You pass this test : good. But that doesn't mean the next test will be easier because you have past the previous one.

Good morning! These questions, why do bad things happen to good people, are born out of the illusion of separateness which it itself is the cause of suffering. It is as such good familiarizing yourself with concept of the "illusion of separateness" or "the illusion of separation" (I suggest doing a search for these words using quotation marks). Truth is all is ONE and the same. Now. It is not good for ONE to be alone. (Reference: Genesis 2:18-25 and change the word man with ONE or GOD or whatever you feel comfortable with). As such ONE has only one choice. One has to Veil itself so to be able to experience Companionship itself. It is only by veiling Oneself that Companionship can be experienced. (Reference: Genesis 1:27-28: So God created man in his own image (imago dei), in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them meaning male and female are el-o-him). The problem with the veil is that it is a double-edge sword. The good is that ONE can experience Companionship. The bad is that ONE experiences suffering by seeing itself as separate. The desire for Companionship aka Love outweighs the bad however and ONE has gone above and beyond to minimize the suffering of the other side of the coin by allowing us to transcend the veil through knowledge (science/jnana). The goal is thus to transcend the illusion of separateness and to see us for who we truly are and to recognize our true purpose which is were all the many paths come in including but not limited to religion, spirituality, science, prayer, et al. But it all comes down to this: Who we are is ONE (not wanting to be alone) and why we are (diverse) is LOVE. Hence we arrive at the final conclusion; the Absolute Truth: "The Meaning of Life is Love". (Reference: 1 Corinthians 13:13: And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. - Mark 12:30-31 New International Version - Bible Gateway: Love God and Your Neighbor as Your Self. - 1 Peter 4:8: Above all, love each other deeply.) Blessings, Wald Wassermann, Physicist.

The majority of the metaphors/analogies weren't very good in my opinion. They were focused on actions you could do or how you could respond to something you have some control over (swimming across moving water, stuck in traffic, wanting to ask for a raise). He didn't expand on the example where someone hits and damages your car. Of course its good not to start yelling and make it worse, but the big question is "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?" Based on what's been said, you should remain calm, acknowledge it was a result of your adrishta karma that fructified and accept the damage. Don't ask the other person to pay for it.

@myhobbyt6102 4 жыл бұрын
Hi World Ukulele, you/ your insurance company will be asking the other party responsible for the accident damages, no one is reasoning to stop you from this, but the fructification reasoning is to calm your mind/intellect as to why, inspite of no fault of yours, this untoward event occurred, so that you can carry on your rest of your daily life obligations, as much as possible, with a state of equanimity, and not suffer from the rumination of the undesired occurrence.

Lord Krishna,s explanation on why he didnt marry Radha his lover. He married rukmani. He explains radha is of course my wife lakshmi but before my incarnation one guy prayed to me for many years to have lakshmi as his wife ,so i had to accept this and gave him lakshmi as his wife, thats why he could not marry radha.who can prove it ? This is the kind of incarnation and past birth going on in india.if past birth is removed our faith has no base .even past birth has no base .my be true may not be true.if we believe then how come so as many people on earth ? Are there completely new souls coming to earth ? If coming why they are suffering bec they should not have no past karma or prarabdha .
