Definitely excited for an 899 version, If the low end is so good at 999 then it certainly has a lot of room to shrink for us proners!

Hi Dominik. Where is your Mast Position when using the ART999(with normal ultrashort fuse). More to the back from the middle of the tracks? Best regards Matt

On the Sunova and appletree boards it's close to the back. In the Axis pump board it's in the middle.

No never. They are perfectly balanced for most users of an average (based around a range above and below 80kg). You only need to use shims if you're super light or heavy

Great review Dominic! Thanks for sharing your experience, so what is your verdict between the ART 999 and the Kujira 1210 to do exactly what you are doing behind a boat. I have a Phantom 1780 and it has a great lift and speed and can go straight for as far as I want, but it’s quite difficult to carve, so i am looking for a smaller foil and hesitate between the Phantom 1480 and 1280. The 1080 will be too small for my level.
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
Despite the ART 999 being smaller I would put it in a very similar category to the kujira 1210. The 1210 has a slightly lower stall speed and is a bit more maneuverable (sort of like a surfy feel) but the 999 has slightly better speed & glide and can deal with a huge range of conditions, and it's top end is slightly better. Out of the Phantom foils I've only used the 1480 (and that was only once) and it felt much more like the kujira 1440, so if you want one to have the same performance range as the 1210 or 999 I suspect you're looking at the 1280

Hi Dominic, I recently just moved to Axis and I find its range amazing. I’ve got the PNG 1310, 1150 and 910. I love all. I saw your review on the ART 999 and I am tempted to get that one too too basically carve like you do behind a boat like yours. My first question: my weight is 85kg, what’s your weight carve so nicely with such a small foil. Second question: if you tried the PNG 910, at these two similar to carve behind your boat or you still prefer the ART 999? Thank you, stefano

Hi Dominic, great review… have ordered one. Which rear wing would you recommend for wing foiling for an early intermediate winger? You mentioned the 380 in your review - do you need to be an advanced winger to enjoy the 380 with the ART999? By the way, what is the location for the videos?
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
For winging the 380 is great when powered but lacks the low end from a bigger rear wing. The 420 could be good but if you wait a bit longer Axis will be bringing out a new range of rear wings that are awesome. I can't say any more than that at the moment 🤐

Yeah good point. I'll see what I can do. Obviously I'm limited to the few foils I've used, but a few spring to mind, like the PNL185 and the HPS 980, and others like the kujira 1210 and Lift HA170 but I'd have to check dimensions
@kanedewilde3 жыл бұрын
@@dominichoskyns9091 lift 170 and hps 980 should be pretty close! Hard to compare to a wing like this, the closest is probably Armstrong 1125. More wingspan uses less energy to stay up, then chord/are basically changes time/vs distance for that energy with the trade off of stall speed. Axis 1150 can probably stay up longer but you travel way farther for the same energy on 999!

Now that the progressive tails are out, what tail would you suggest I pair with my 999 for winging? I’m 70kg and intermediate starting to work on jumps. I currently have the 400 freeride and 460 speed in my quiver. Speed, glide, carving and pump would be my order of priority. Thanks in advance!
@dominichoskyns90912 жыл бұрын
The p400 would be the safe bet. It's great in every performance aspect, but personally I prefer the p350 as you can turn it tighter, so it feels a bit lost, but you still get heaps of control and you don't lose that much in terms of pumping. If you like a locked in feeling go with the p400 but if you like a more responsive feeling then go smaller

Thank you for your review. How does it compare to a Kujira 980? Mainly for winging purposes!
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
The kujira 980 is faster, and much more lively and responsive in terms of maneuverability, BUT the 999 has a MUCH better low end and is MUCH easier to pump. The 980 has to be kept powered either by the wing or swell (or a wave) to keep from stalling, whereas the 999 you have a LOT more margin for error. IMO the 980 is a beast when you are powered but the 999 is the clear winner of the 2 in marginal conditions. If you lose speed with these foils the 980 will stall but the 999 keeps on gliding so long you'll be amazed, BUT when powered up I prefer the super responsive maneuverability of the 980.

@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
I use the ultrashort fuse, but the standard fuse is slightly easier to pump for increased duration, but it comes at the expense of maneuverability. I mostly pump around to chase swell to ride so I'm happy for this tradeoff. 82cm ali mast. 15" KDmaui rear wing better for maneuverability but 460 best for pure pumping

Great review as usual👍. Could you say anything about the kujira 1440? In comparison? Not in terms of size, but the general feeling and early lift, glide and turning abilities? Having myself the kuji 980 and helium 1500. The Kujiras just have this very distinct glide and feel and once you like it it's very addictive🤙🤙🤙....a is wingfoiling in general😂😂😂
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
Not yet - I only had the chance to use the 1440 once very briefly a few weeks ago in the UK, but it will be arriving here in a few days so I will be able to put it though it's paces and then will be able to feedback on this. I completely agree with you about the distinctive glide and feel of the kujira's being addictive. The ART999 has slightly better glide than the kujira 1210, and that glide keeps going for longer - it doesn't slow down as easliy/quickly, however, IMO the kujira's turn much better - they have a lovely surfey feel that you can either carve smooth or crank around in hard sharp turns - much more loose than the 999. Having said that I am using a much smaller tail with the kujira's and will have to see what difference a smaller tail makes with the 999

Hi Dominic, I am still learing on my Starboard M1000 front wing. It's specs are close to the 999 and it is plenty fast. But it is not so good on the low end. I am 77 kg and with my 5'8" 88L Wingboard & 5m Wasp V2 I need about 13 knots of wind and 7-8 knots of board speed to get flying. My 150L modded board took less effort to get enough speed to get to flight vs my 88L. Makes me think a foil that needs less speed to get to flight is the way to go. Do you think the ART 999 a lot better on the low end? I am comfortable slogging in light wind with my 88L board. For my weight do you think I could make due with the 999 as my largest wing for Wingfoiling? I still plan to Windsurf and Windfoil so I am trying to get more universal gear for Winging. Thanks for any advice. 🙂
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
I'm really sorry but I've never used the M1000 foil and don't know anything about the Starboard foils so I really can't comment/compare it to the ART 999. I'm 82kg and I have a big range of foil sizes, from the Axis 1300 down to the Kujira 980 (and a few in between!!!!) and they all have their place depending on the conditions. The only advice I can give you to your question is to be aware that while the 999 has a good low end compared to other foils of a comparable size, it is still a small foil and therefore it's low end is nowhere near as low as other bigger or lower aspect foils. For example the 999 has a better low end than the HPS 980, but the BSC 890 (both comparable in size to the 999) has a better low end than the 999. I hope this is of some help to you.

👌.How du you think this foil would perform in the context of wing foiling? Would you prefer it compared to the HPS 930? Also, do you believe this geometry successfully would scale up/down in size? Thanks!
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
There's no reason I can think of why it wouldn't perform as well when scaled up/down. For wing foiling it is AMAZING!!!!!! I haven't used the HPS930 (the only foil in the HPS range I've used is the 980) but from what I've heard the top end performance of the 999 is easily comparable to the 930 (maybe even the 880) but it's low end is soooooo much better.

@@dominichoskyns9091 - what's the bottom wind speed you'd want to wing on the 999? I'm currently using a 1100 cm2 x 76 wide as my daily driver, but I'd want 12-13 knots really (on a 5m). The wind gets too patchy at my local spot when it goes less than 10 knots so not really interested in getting below that, but even if the 999 pulls the bottom end down a knot or two, that would be a big deal for me! I could perhaps ditch my big foils which I don't really like using!
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
@@solentfoiler5969 I was using it in 8-12 knots the other day and it was great, but that was with a 7m Duotone Slick and the size board you're using. The useable wind range depends lot on your weight. I'm 82kg and would normally be on a much bigger foil in that wind range, posdibly the kujira 1210 or the GoFoil PNL185. 8-10 knots and I'd be on the Axis 1300. When you're down in this little wing even 1 or 2 knots makes a huge difference.

Does this turn as good as the NL160? Does it pump better than the NL 160? Does it have earlier lift than the 160?
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
It is a lot easier to pump than the NL160. It's got similar lift, maybe a bit better. It carves really nicely, you can turn hard and it remains in control throughout the turn, but the NL160 can turn much tighter (it can rip from rail to rail much quicker) and feels more loose. I would say the NL160 has a more surfy feel whereas the 999 is more for winging and especially downwinding. The 999 is more pitch stable.

@@dominichoskyns9091 Thanks for the info. Debating switching so this is relevant.
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
@@bohdanschatschneider9962 the NL160 is better if you're doing tight, quick turns and hard cut backs but the 999 definitely wins in terms of glide, speed and stability through carves. Do you know what I mean by having to correct the pitch suddenly when carving the NL160? None of that with the 999!
@bohdanschatschneider99623 жыл бұрын
@@dominichoskyns9091 The NL can do some strange things. Sometimes it'll drop out from under you in a turn and sometimes it'll catch some backwash and explode (think taco time, but both those things may be user error). Also, when the waves get big (shoulder or bigger), the 160 gets really touchy with respect to pitch (again could be user error). But I do love when it's waist to chest high and you can rip hard turns on the 160 (turns way better than the GLs - unless you're Hamasaki). Additionally, I really have a hard time pumping the 160 unless I exit really fast. In comparison, if I exit kinda slow on a GL 210 I can save the pump and accelerate for multiples. But I can't figure out how to do that with the NL...I just drop. Does the ART999 allow for acceleration if you bobble or exit slow?
@dominichoskyns90913 жыл бұрын
@@bohdanschatschneider9962 yeah I know exactly what you mean about the 160 doing unexpected things as you push it more, which doesn't build confidence. I also find it difficult to pump. The 999 is soooooo much better in both of these issues. You do have to keep its speed up to pump (not as much as the 160) but its much easier to recover from a mistake while pumping (I can pump the 999 so much further than the 160), however the tail stab you use makes a huge difference, I would recommend the new progressive tails, 400 if pumping is your priority but I'm loving the 350 as its easier to turn quicker (the 400 locks you in to turns) so maybe the 375 world be the perfect compromise
