I acknowledged my problem last year and with the information from this video it lies within planification stage! It was to do with drawing my characters, I didn't spend alot of time (if any) gathering references, I just jumped right into it expecting myself to be able draw them exactly how I saw them in my head (because I felt like I've drawn enough to at least get a decent result, (even though I haven't drawn them prior)), which always ended up with extremely poor results which then lead to me developing a fear of drawing them, so I just stopped drawing all together 😅 I've known the problem, but thanks to you, I now know what caused it and what I need to do to fix it!

Also, to anyone going through a phase where you absolutely despise your art, this can actually be a good sign of improvement. This shows that you've gotten to a point where you can see the issues in your drawings and you now how the ability to focus on what your struggling with. Notice how a lot of bad artists can't tell their bad? That's because they lack the knowledge of what certain things should look like. Dont be afraid of making a bad drawing, dont crumble it up and throw it out. Keep them so you can look back at what you did wrong. I've been going through this phase for about two years now, and I've learned so much from it. Take this also as a challenge to improve your confidence learn to be happy with the mistakes.

I took some notes 1. Preparation * Project/art planning. Building context on what to make * Gather reference, etc * Limit yourself, set boundaries so there isn’t choice paralysis. * Make sure your plan is doable with current skills. 2. Incubation * Let it sit in the back of your mind. Let your subconscious handle it. * Disconnect for a while. * Avoid distraction. * Start another project 3. Illumination * Getting flashes of ideas for your project * Aha moment * Consume a bunch of art to fuel creativity and ideas 4. Verification * Executing your idea, seeing if it works out. * Make sure its 70% easy, 30% hard. * Don’t rush. Time constraint = creativity killer.

For me, I've always found taking long walks while listening to music helps get my imagination going, art block or not. It's like a weird car battery charged by driving to me. I would decide on something to work on and kinda sift through ideas in my mind as I walk around busy streets, malls, neighbourhoods, etc. Then I'll keep mental notes for when I get the chance to sketch it out.

So my tip is: I get artblock if I’m sad. If I see something that puts me in a bad mood I get artblock and can’t draw. My advice is don’t force yourself to draw, the artblock will grow stronger. Another tip (not really artblock related): experiment ALL 👏🏽 THE 👏🏽 TIME! Try other artstyles, brushes, techniques, little hacks and giblets. Try them out! It’s how I improve in art, and it may help u. The downside is that ur artsyle won’t be consistent, but that’s honestly fine. U don’t need to focus on ur artsyle, it’ll happen in the end don’t force it

It's so hard not to force yourself to draw when you have an art block 😭 I usually try to draw everyday and if I dont I feel bad abt it. Maybe that's why I have it all the time. I think maybe taking a break for a while is better since you aren't failing again and again. Also, you will start to miss drawing so that could also inspire you to draw again.

I actually had an art block last year and I found it helpful to just, stop digital painting for a while, sit in a cafeteria and just draw whatever without caring for making flaws. Perfectionism have always been a big bitch for me (still is). Nowadays I have a lot of breaks and I try to mostly ignore how many likes I get on social media. If I happen to check, I won't take much out of it and try not to return to it too often.

So what i did was i wrote every idea that comes into my brain as many as i could while i watch some anime and read mangas and i used those ideas to formulate a new story and suddenly Idk my dumbass inspiration pops up again, also when you're brainstorming for a new idea, i always listen to different music depending on the genre of my idea. One thing that helped a lot for me is having a sketchpad/notepad to write down or even better draw ideas as they come to you throughout the day. So when you sit down to draw you have a pool of ideas to choose from. I've noticed that it's easier to come up with ideas when you don't have to paint them immediately. This also helps you feel more like a creative person because you always have a bunch of ideas going on whereas if you sit down in front of a blank canvas and try to come up with ideas it's much harder and you will hate yourself.

Eventually it builds up day by day and I get back on track again. I keep multiple projects ongoing. It's nice to have always something to return to. I found your tips very helpful and it inspired me to now cook myself a nutritious meal so I have energy for drawing later. Thanks, I love your videos! And the drawing is outstanding.

Awesome video :) lots of really insightful and useful tips here! I think the incubation part is so essential, it's so important to be excited about what we're creating - that excitement carries through in every brush stroke and right into the imagination of the viewer :D My personal treatment for art block is eating small amounts of psychedelics with a great deal of intention (examining sadness, awareness of needed improvements, why relationships are important, stuff like that), and go exploring the forest, forget that I am an artist, turn into a tree, get tired, turn back into a human, play my favorite music on the way back, write down all my ideas, take action notes, decide on ONE THING I can do right in that moment, do a handstand while the inspiration boils and bubbles over the edges and let it spill onto the digital canvas!
@thesunthrone2 жыл бұрын
Perfect breakdown! It's counter-intuitive to what most teach, but stepping away from the canvas and taking a break is always the right thing to do. When your eye and mind is fresh, you don't just see the mistakes you made clearer - you also find better solutions for the issues you can now see. Though, what I love the most about these kinds of videos from you is that they apply to life in general. What you outline here applies to pretty much any kind of creative process that requires non-linear problem solving, and it's something everyone would benefit from learning. Everybody's rushing without thinking in our modern times, and taking some time to consider what we're really doing is beneficial for us all.

I was alone in the art class, trying to do what's best for my drawing nearly without any help. Now when I study in university and learn those things again, "that thing" happens. Like Marc said, my brain sends messages to avoid doing colored drawing or real anatomy drawing, those related to the first time I learned the basic anatomy and color. Now I really hate drawing with color material and anatomy. I don't know how to fix it, can you guys help me with it ? It was not a positive experience because one of the benefits of art is that you can put your whole self into a project and take a break from the rest of life. Without the restrictions or plan my life was the project and it was incredibly stressful.

@jjjoannn Жыл бұрын
I've been in an art block for three years now. if I'm being honest, I don't really know, or remember, *why* I stopped. it just happened, and I have no clue why. I used to be pretty decent at drawing, I wasn't the best, nor was I horrible. I actually used to hate drawing for some reason, I don't really know why either. I thought it was dumb, and it was annoying to do, and I only did it once in a blue moon when I was bored. a close family member of mine used to draw a lot, around 2016, or maybe a year before, and I didn't really pay attention to it because I wasn't into art. that was until there wasn't much for me to do, and I found random uncolored pictures of characters from shows I enjoyed online, and I liked to color them in because it was kind of fun and a way to pass the time. eventually, I kind of just.. got into drawing. I drew random little silly things, characters, and I even remember doing a picture digitally that was supposed to be bubbles or just colored little orbs using the circle shape thing, LOL. perhaps that bubble part wasn't exactly important, but as I was drawing it I didn't care. I had no worries or fears during that time I made it, I just did it for fun and because I wanted to try it out. I didn't worry about whether or not it had to be perfect, and I didn't care how it looked and I didn't worry about how it should or shouldn't have looked. I just did it without a second thought, and because I genuinely liked the process of it, even though it was basic and simple. eventually, I started to do these little photo edits for a game I enjoyed, and I liked to do that because it was fun, and I posted them on this art app just for the heck of it, unfortunately the art app got taken down, so all of my drawings disappeared unfortunately. I even got a few friends to post some of their art on the app, so theirs vanished as well. I was upset for a little while, but that didn't stop me from drawing and making edits. I continued to draw, until things started to go downhill. I started to worry about every single little move I made, every stroke I made, and I could barely draw anymore. I got so frustrated every time, and that made me toss everything I loved away. I couldn't get 5 minutes into a drawing without getting angry at it because it wasn't going how I wanted. I started to do less of the art I usually did, and everything I once knew started to sway before it all came crashing down in front of me, and I could only watch without doing a single thing because I was so mad at drawing and I was so mad at myself and if I'm being honest I still am and it hurts me. I loved art, I loved drawing, and I still do, and I'm scared, horrified, that I just don't have enough in me to get back to where I was, or further. I don't *exactly* have to be right where I was, just a little further, a few steps more than where I am right now, is so much more than I could ask for. art hurts, whether you're in an art block or not, and I understand that, and I'm willing to go through what I need, but this art block is too much. I love art so much still and straying further and further from it feels like half of my being has been ripped away from me, and I don't like it because I don't like how I'm feeling and it hurts sometimes. it was something I enjoyed so much, I looked forward to putting ideas onto a piece of paper, I loved drawing characters, and just random things, but it's so frustrating and difficult for me to do that now, and I've gotten at such a low point that all of my progress has vanished. everything I built up, is gone, I'm not getting better, I haven't moved an inch, at least not forward. it seems I've moved 1000 steps back, all the way to the beginning, and I can't even pick my feet back up. but I want to, even though I get mad, I don't want to feel bad anymore, art was one of the things I had going and now that it's gone I feel so lost. I'm trying very hard, at least, as hard as I can, to pick myself up and start at the beginning, and move forward little by little, I'm trying to start over. and I hope, genuinely hope, with all of my being, that maybe some time eventually I'll be okay, and that I'll be able to get somewhere, just anywhere. somewhere else than where I'm at right now. I want to try, and I'm going to do my best to get back into art, so I'll be checking out some more of your content, and wish for the best, thank you.

It‘s interesting to touch on this topic in that way. Subconsciously I did just that lately. I wanted to do a character design for a DnD game but I didn‘t really feel like drawing it yet. I waited for like a month because I didn‘t feel like drawing. Then I saw something on Pinterest that sparked just the right idea and I drew it. The only small challenge was kind of a new medium which slowed everything down. For verification I sent a simple drawing to my DM who was quite excited for it. Now I still need to touch up on it but I kind of paused it to delve deeper into the new medium. Though I told myself I don‘t need to rush.

Thnx for uploading a great video again! I'm actually a mural artist, but I often find your videos to be helpful because there's a lot of basic art knowledge involved as well. I'm definetely the type of person who tends to skips the second phase and goes looking at inspiring images straigth away (to get the illumination phase going) after the basic plan is out there. I have this file on my computer full of random art that I found really cool to have my imagination growing, but I'm going to try out doing something totally unrelated first next time. It's often that that's where cool ideas are coming from, so I'm glad you sort of opened my eyes here ;)

If I would see this 20 years ago I would be an artist now... I compared myself to others and felt like I'm the only one that can't just sit and draw something. I did not know of "planning" stage I just thought they draw whatever comes to mind and its awesome while i stare at empty page. I dropped drawing and work in IT now ( as I thought it doesn't require creativity lolz) and that video still absolutely applies! Thanks :)

This dude is almost at 1M, good luck and by the way your lessons are really good and I can already draw so much better than I did only 2 months ago. :)

Thanks for the video. Art School is helping me out tremendously even if I make slow progress. Would it be possible to have a short episode on how to draw the female breast in various shapes well? Small, flatt, etc etc. That would be amazing.

What really helped me was to have an clear realistic goal and stop doing complex lightning or designs, Trent Kaniuga also mentioned something like this. Great video!

just got out from an art block a week ago 😅😅and I can admit that consuming art is always and important thing to keep me motivated also drawing streams are a nice way to get back to drawing one of my role models😎😎 ( REIQ ) got a lot of streams that all he do is sketching so I think it will help to follow along with him so you don't feel demotivated 🔥🔥keep it up everyone

Oh my god, hold on, let me takes notes. All of last year was so difficult for me to make any art because I lost interest in what used to inspire me and became really unhappy with my art direction. Art school on top of that just drained all my motivation. I haven't finished an art piece since around June of last year. My goal for this year though is to get back into the swing of things and work on my fundamentals and conceptual work rather than illustration. So thank you! This is exactly what I needed to hear; this stuff should have been taught in my art school!

I get them often i find, there is not enough time in the day to get alll my art peices done and to come up with new original ideas. But whenever i do have an art block i just look at my favorite video game, movie or comic book character ie spiderman, james heller, james bone, crypto spurrdioum alien, ratchet and clank,etc they help to get me going

Avoiding distractions is virtually impossible for me, currently living with my mom, and she constantly distracts me whenever I try to sit down and focus on anything, and having ADHD/ADD doesn't help either

i was too much focused i spent like 4 days and nights trying to study Marc's Anatomy and when i finally had it done i showed it to everyone and everyone was impressed and proud but then the next day i coudn't do anything else its been like this for 5 days now i cant even draw simple shapes, i was looking out to be able to do the anatomically correct figure and when i got it done i lost track of everything, i was like "ok what do i do now? i reached the goal i wanted"

I've had art block for over a month this time... I created around 6 pieces in a week just before xmas (I usually make 1 at most) and I think my brain got tired. After that nothing looked right on paper and i got so frustrated that I ripped up a drawing for the cat to play with the paper :/ Instead iv decided to go back and brush up on things like anatomy, perspective, propertions etc so bring my confidence back up before trying again. Gonna try your tips too, thanks!

I’ve been in a weeks-long art block, this is very much appreciated! Also that intro is very appreciated.
